In this 1975 classic, "The Stepford Wives," a young couple moves to the seemingly perfect town of Stepford, where the wives are unusually submissive and devoted to their husbands. Yesterday, Friday 21 - I heard on my fave Classical radio station that Donald Sutherland passed away at the age of 88. I met Mr. Sutherland along with Peter O'Toole at a panel discussion at the Toronto Film Festival at the Toronto Dominion Centre Building where it was headed by Frank Marshall who was the President of TIF at the time. Mr. Sutherland and Mr. O'Toole signed my TIF program. This program is framed and hanging on my studio wall :) Many Blessings for the great shows. Rest in Peace.

The Stepford Wives!! Definitely a Classic !! When this came out I was only 10 years old old . When it got to TV screen the “ Censors “ really chopped it up !! As with all horror and practically anything from the Silver Screen it was cut and heavily edited for television screening . Which was brutal . They tried to show 1976 Carrie and boy my older brothers said they cut everything out of it . When VHS came out in the early 80s you had to Rent to appreciate the true film in its entirety . Television was bad with censorship in the 70s& 80s.

I was born in 64, but was 10 when me and a friend saw it in the theaters, I believe (October baby) assuming it was a summer film. We saw it again the next weekend. Kathrine Ross and Paula Prentice were so great in this. Patrick O'Neal is creepy and great. Fun seeing Tina Louise in serious stuff. Chilling thriller as a kid.

The husband / dentist is an ugly, dreary, useless drone. He sacrifices his amazing partner for a fantasy of sexual gratification with a prosthesis. Very apropos of USA 1970 style. Fake cheap. Bad. Nasty.

'The Stepford Wives' (1975) is a real gem of a movie starring Katharine Ross and Paula Prentiss as well as a lot of other familiar cast members including: - Tina Louise as Ginger in 'Gilligan's Island' - Josef Sommer seen in 'Witness' (1985) co-starring with Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis - Patrick O'Neal seen in 'King Rat' (1965), 'Silent Night, Bloody Night' (1972), 'The Stuff' (1985), etc. What a treat and with a nice creepy ending too.

Everyone seems to be missing the fact that these women were murdered and replaced with robots. I you are unhappy, get a divorce. Plus, did he ever consider the fact that he has 2 little girls. I guess hes okay with the fact that when they grow up, if they marry a guy from Stepford, they will be murdered and replaced with robots too.

This is so hard to watch. (Spoilers) The erasure of someones personality in favor of “perfection”- its one of the most hideous things, yet the real world is full of it for men as well as women. Perfectionism is a mental illness, and imposing it on yourself or someone else is a crime against the Human spirit.

In real life, actress Paula Prentiss' husband is actor/director Richard Benjamin and they have remained married since 1961 which is no small feat, especially in Hollywood. As an aside, Richard Benjamin co-starred with James Brolin and Yul Brynner in 'Westworld' (1973) which would make a great Creature Features movie in the future. :)

I just googled it, West World was 1973, I wondered which was first. They were similar in concepts, in some ways. Loved this movie as kid, me and my buddy went back the next weekend and saw it again. Unsettling then. Kathrine Ross and Paula Prentice were great in this. Patrick O'Neal is disturbingly good. Yul Brenner scared the crap out of me I was 8 years old in West World, incidently. The heroines here I thought were just great. Fun seeing Tina Louise in a serious role. The face off between the friends in the kitchen is disturbing and unforgettable. I'm glad the maid got off relatively easy tonight, Tangela blows up toilets and stuff. The little grave digger, lol.

Understanding that this is a satirical piece of art not a newsreel, I nonetheless consider it anti-men, divisive, and therefore harmful. I do not see anything bad in women's love for homemaking, caring for kids and husband. It is natural and foundational for the society.

@jerrimenard3092 3 ай бұрын
If both the husband and wife want that lifestyle, it's fantastic. As long as nobody is being taken advantage of. I would imagine no husband wants to be treated like a wallet. If he is of modest means and she needs to work outside the home to balance the checkbook, then that's what standing by her man looks like. Also, the Tradwife to welfare pipeline is real . Guys who dump their wives after they are no longer hot, need to have repercussions legally. She's not an old sofa or a pet.

It isn't. CIP, how many men MARRY women who don't understand a word of English? Keep in mind, women/females (children) are killed, raped and abused JUST for being female! A man wrote this. He's no fool. Most readers are women Not to mention harassment, not being heard at all, raped, abused...I've seen men harass women that were strangers and she didn't even know he was alive. It was an OLD guy. She had to tell him her GoldWing was 100% US made (Ohio, at the time) while his Harley wasn't, and she could still easily beat him. Again, guy she didn't even know was alive, harassing her.

I'm glad they kept the ending in tact. The horror is in the level / scale of betrayal, & malice. The utter worthlessness. The non value of the female. As anything other than an object of sex, & convenience. It also mirrors the very real anger of men at that time. That women would dare change the rules. End marriages. I was seven, in 75. For many generations of men. The anger was palpable. The betrayal of death. Mirrored the death of the social contract. Many men were quite comfortable with. You could actually feel the tension in the air.

When this first aired, I saw it in theaters. It was typical of the sort of film (horror sci fi) of the time, like 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers. There was this 'fear' of humans being replaced but no one would believe you. The biggest issue with me was the silly assumption that we would have the technology to create ROBOTS that are indistinguishable from real human beings. That was a common trope in the 1970s, with the FEMBOTS from the 6 Million Dollar man TV series, to The Questor Tapes (1974), we always assumed that it was easy to create human like robots. Ridiculous. I always figured interstellar travel would come BEFORE we can create realistic human cyborgs/robots/androids/etc. And I mean not just similar but ones that are sentient enough to act and react and FOOL us into thinking they were human beings at close range. Not possible in this or the next century.

You're missing the point entirely. You should talk to some women, find out what they think. The horrible part is WAY too many men control, abuse and MARRY women who understand NO ENGLISH. AT ALL. Odds are very good most to all women you know have known men like this. It's rudeness/harassment to women for no reason. To murder and rape BECAUSE she's female. That's the only reason. Often a very young woman or even a child. Ask any woman. They'll tell you. She could be a licensed expert in something. And men will STILL tell her she's wrong. But not argue or get confrontational with a man who does/says the same thing! Physical, emotional and mental abuse. Not to mention that women couldn't have her own bank account, mortgage, credit cards...into the 70s! If she divorced, often times the husband wouldn't bother w his own kids again. Go remarry and start over. She'd be in big trouble if she left.

Love this classic Vincent, mostly for the cast especially Katherine Ross who I fell in love with the first time I saw her!!! I have seen this many times before. I am a Catherine Ross fan. Great flick. It opens the door to a lot of discussion. {For the record, I think most men, myself included, to not want a wife to be a maid - personally, I am embarrassed to have the lady of the house scrubbing toilets.} that being said, there are many other issues. Like finding here you fit in and can be comfortable. - Now, what even she thought was going on, when you shove a knife into the gut of some one who could be human, you lave lost it.

I never did like the ending. I wish she got her children and escaped from their clutches. Because if the men had the natural wives killed, what did they do with the children? And when the men get old and die, what are them robots gonna do, Keep they house clean until they rust?
