Henry tak about how you manage risk once your short strike is challenged. At what point do you bail out? Do you do a percentage of credit received or percentage of max risk. Also nowadays the VIx is very low not good for credit spreads the risk vs reward is not favorable. What expiration do you select your credit spreads, more than 30DTE to collect more credit considering IV is low? In your example you collected $0.68 on a $5 wide spread? So your reward to risk: 0.68 / (4.32)= 15.74% with .15 delta on your short strike?

On Aug 1, 2023 NVDA hit 493.50, which was the high. A credit spread of $460-465 would hit max loss of about $4.30 per contract (or $430 contract or 10 contracts loss of $4,300). I think the credit he received was between .60 - .80 (don't remember). If he didn't adjust, that is a 600% loss. If he did adjust it would still be a loss, just less depending on how he did it.

I was just wondering if you'd ever done that , but it sounds like not. I have been experimenting with it as I run spreads, and haven't really felt out whether or not there are good reasons to do that, or what kind of methodology one might use for that. But it seemed like one possible way to rescue a spread that was getting close to expiring in the money.

Any credit spread in or close to the money should be closed just before expiration to avoid assignment and subsequently having to buy/sell the stock. It also carries margin risk and a FED call risk as well as adverse price movement in the underlying over the weekend. DONT DO THIS! If both are out of the money, then let them expire.

Good video, the fundamentals of strike selection seem spot on, and, with the benefit of hindsight, nearly worked (or "are working")... However, I'm a little surprised you regarded this trade as a "95%" safe bet (I know that's based solely on technicals) based on the momentum and press NVDA had/has backing it. A quick 1-year plot of NVDA's share price would've showed you that this trade would've worked.... never... in the past year. To assume it would work now, without factoring in any news at all (in the video at least), seems beneath your level. I believe it would've at least warranted a comment to the effect of "NVDA has been so erratic the last year, and AI has become the new rallying call of the gamestop generation, that this trade is all but a sure thing". Nonetheless, your option-selection method is admirable.

The only concern with call credit spreads i need to address before I open my first. Lets say the stock price goes between my spread strikes and my short position is exercised early, but my long position isn't itm. I'm concerned that this would leave me with a naked call that I now have to cover with cash I don't have in my account. I'm sure there's a workaround here but I haven't seen this addressed.

Call credit spreads and put debit spreadsnhave approximately the same risk/reward profile. Advantages of credit spreads is that they ideally expire out of the money. Put debit spreads are by definition in the money on the long side and require closing prior to exp unless you want to be put the stock. The 2 sides require separate collateral since they can both lose money if entered simultaneously. Iron condors and iron butterflies on the other hand cannot have both put and call sides expire in the money, so can share the same collateral.

Robinhood tends to setup the options trades with your limit price in the middle of the Bid and Ask price. If you want to make the trade execute sooner, just change the limit price so it’s closer to the current Bid price. Same if you want to buy to close the spread.
