In short. Having a credit card means you're spending the bank's money, while having a debit card means you're spending your own money that you've deposited in a bank account that belongs entirely to you. The advantage debit has over credit is that you won't have to pay the money you've spent back.

You basically buy things with it, but instead of that money coming out of your bank account right away, you pay for the things you buy once a month. So if you use your credit card to buy $100 of gas, you wouldn't see that money leave your account until it is time for you to pay off your card. Hope that made sense!
