This song was hated because it was 1- overplayed, 2- all the yarling, 3- the topic of the song: People at the time weren't open to a rockstar being vulnerable and insecure of being a father. Personally, this song gives me goosebumps every time. I grew up with these "hated" bands, and they opened up the doors for heavier music for me.

My brother lost his first son years ago weeks before his birth, at the funeral he was calm, all day he was calmed, stoic and focused, the next week i went to his home, didn't saw him anywhere, i heard noise coming from a room in the backyard, i walked, opened the door but he never knew i was there because of the loud music, he was listening to THIS song. My big brother, strong and big as an oak, crying, broken and on his knees. I didnt said anything, didnt called him, nothing, i just closed the door and let him be and went back home pretty shocked and sad. Since that day on i couldnt listen to this song anymore. Hell, i even had to skip this video because of the memories it brings to me. Anyways, nice video guys, see you in the next one 🤘

It's noticable that a lot of these 'hated' bands came around in the late 90s / early 00s. It was mostly due to the merging of all the radio stations into top 40 crapshows and MTV blasting TRL and shit. This song and others like it were just inescapable. Imagine if Spotify automatically put this into all your playlists twice for every hour of music you listened to and didn't let you skip it. You'd start to hate it real quick too.

Well, that combined with the bandwagon effect is what caused the hate to begin with really. Everyone got tired of hearing it, so the people that complained from the start were 'vilified' and it became "oh he hates this band, and I'm getting tired of them, maybe he's right and they actually do suck". Then it snowballed because "If this many people hate the band/song then they must be right, it must be awful."

If I can give my 2 cents on why people hate Creed, and Nickelback for the same matter - I think they represent the edge-less, sterile, superficial, "safe" and no-surprises kind of rock that stayed in the charts while rock music as a whole started losing it's grip on mainstream music. For my taste, these bands aren't bad, they're just boring and predictable. They never challenge the listner's ear neither musically nor lyrically. The production is very polished, never taking you places you didn't think they'll go. No risks... no danger... no... rock.
@mattj6244

To me, this song is adult contemporary rock-like Michael Bolton with guitars; same brand of contrived, heavy-handed melodrama, repackaged for the post-grunge market. It feels like it's trying too hard to elicit my emotions without giving me anything artistically interesting or creative to inspire a sincere feeling in me. It's just kind of... Fine. Inoffensive. It's well produced, sure ("sounds good"), but something something lipstick on a pig.

Except they weren't a Pearl Jam clone at all. Vedder and Stapp both have baritone voices and the yarl. That's where the similarities end. Unless you want to say they both used electric guitars and drums.
@billhicks8

@@jek4837 The hammered-on circular style playing of the notes, the tendency of the "yarl" matched with balladic anthemic choruses ("Black" by Pearl Jam seems to be the father of all these post grunge radio ballads). The tendency of the heavier songs on an album to having McCready-style wah pedalling. I think there are plenty more similarities tbh.

I think the one similarity you could find in Limp Bizkit and Creed is that I don't think many hate the purely instrumental side of the music. Mark Tremonti and Wes Borland are both great guitar players. The main issue people have with each is the persona and lyrics of the lead singers. Fred Durst is a clown, and Scott had serious demons to face while lyrically acting as a Bono-esque figure. Alter Bridge does not get enough credit for making an even stronger band from what was Creed.
@keefriff99

Yup, you 100% nailed it. Durst and Stapp were both INSUFFERABLE back in the day. I remember so many people in the late '90s/early '00s saying, "If only the instrumental sections of those bands would ditch Fred and Scott, I'd listen to their music."

It's mostly because people really hated post-grunge, IMO. Grunge was dark, raw, and down.... Post grunge flipped it, and made it "sappy", and "corny" (at times). Creed was loved when they came out. Somewhere along the line it became hip to hate on them and rock bands with mainstream success. Scott Stapp had a reputation of being a douche that may have factored in as well. Nu Metal also came in around this time and took over the airways from the post-grunge crowd. Creed, 3 Doors Down, Puddle of Mudd, and bands like that faded away within five years of hitting it big.

@@_bats_ Staind became formulaic quickly, but that first album had some really heavy songs. Most of the pushback against bands like Staind and Creed (and even Nickeback) was the oversaturation of their power ballad songs. Compare Mudshovel to It's Been Awhile or What If to With Arms Wide Open. The typical Creed or Staind songs are far closer to the former than the later.

I listened to this with my sons who were in their late teens and early twenties when this song came out They were very much in this scene. They never got to the point that they hated Creed but understand why others did. They believe that the big issue was Stapp's alcohol abuse and domestic issues. This was compounded by being based originally on the periphery of Christian music and the perception of hypocrisy regarding Stapp's behavior. Finally, they were post grunge and accused of taking the elements of grunge and sanitizing it. My sons had never seen you guys. They liked what you did and the idea behind it. I’m a hater, and you forced me to question why. I’m gonna give this a shot: First of all, this was pushed so hard on rock radio, so if you don’t like it you’re gonna end up hating it. And why didn’t I like it? They took the grunge sound, polished up the production, took the dark/rebellious aspects out and made it wholesome. I guess that just rubbed me the wrong way. And this is the first I’ve ever posted about it. I don’t like to spend time and energy on negativity either. But you asked!

Creed (for ME at least) was a... perfect storm. In my city (Central FL, where they are ALSO from) they were eeeverywhere. Then, they were everywhere on the radio...every radio, every station. It would come on one station, flip the channel- then it was JUST beginning on THAT station. Then, because the lead singer was a mess, he would preach to you about needing to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior, then cheat on his wife...or THEN get totally hammered and start fights, or pass out, or what have you. It was this odd mixture of an inescapable song, with a VERY narcissistic front man who was the epitome of do as I say not as I do. It really altered the entire trajectory of the entire band. For me. This is all my own perspective. Many people here shunned him, his wife left, and the band was collateral damage. He kind of self imploded. Just, all around yucky. I don't get warm and fuzziness or think it's beautiful, although I can Understand that. He really came to be known as a hypocrite (here, at least) and just kind of an all around dick, who also though he was god himself. The Eddie Vedder rip off sound comparison came later...after, or right around the time Icarus started headed towards the sun

Keep in mind that Limp Bizkit and Creed came at the tail end of the grunge era, which was a bit of a rock revival. After the 80's, which had a lot of cheese, grunge was a breath of fresh air. I'll give you the reasons why I dislike Creed: 1. Musically uninspiring - If you listen to a good amount of their songs, you can hear Mark Tremonti being held back. You hear the talent, but it's being suffocated. By simply removing Scott Stapp and replacing him with Myles Kennedy (and shedding the name Creed), it gave him room to breathe for once. 2. Scott Stapp. He once said in an interview that "There's more to life than sex, drugs and rock n roll". Within a year, a sex tape leaked with him saying "It's good to be the king". Around the same time, at their peak, he was visibly drunk at shows, to the point that fans sued him. Then, he would fight anyone who would make Pearl Jam jabs, including 311 in a hotel restaurant on Thanksgiving. He had all of these religious themes in his lyrics, which is fine, but time showed him to be a fraud. Essentially, Scott Stapp is the Fred Durst of the Post Grunge Movement...except that while Limp Bizkit is experiencing a benefit of revisionist history thanks to the Woodstock 99 Documentary, Creed is continuing to age like vinegar.

Not only did Stapp hold back Tremonti on guitar but he got pissed and fired Brain Marshall, the bassist after their second album. As a bassist myself I loved Brian’s playing on My Own Prison and Human Clay albums. Apparently Stapp did not. I love the fact that Mark got Brian back for Alter Bridge.

For me, it was never about ripping off grunge's sound or sounding like Vedder. Creed's music always had a bloated, melodramatic sound, and Scott Stapp came off as a pious, overly-earnest, self-important nimrod who did endless Jesus-on-the-cross poses onstage and in videos. I was in college when they hit big, and you just could not get away from their songs...the band itself is talented as hell, but it was definitely Stapp who was responsible for most of the hate and ridicule. They definitely had positive messages in some of their songs, but there were also many that were quite dark. "My Own Prison" was about creating your own hell. "Bullets" again about people taking shots at you, trying to tear you down. "One Last Breath" is about depression and pain and considering killing yourself. "Weather" similarly about being broken and beaten down by life. But you get the idea.

After almost 70 years of rock it is almost impossible for someone to make something that doesn't sound similar to something from the past. Maybe if a person was from a totally isolated place maybe they would make something that sounds totally new. 🤔

That would be interesting, though it would have to be some kind of tribal or basic instrumentation for the to be from an isolated place in this day and age. Maybe there's some person who was born and raised in the woods and happened to have a guitar or something.

Thing about Creed was Pearl jam and all those copycat bands had already had its time by 1999 and this band just sounded like a cheesy Christian rock version of those copycat bands . Eddie Vedder was the original and could get away with the " mouth full of balls " voice but after that it just sounded lame .

I haven't looked through all the comments of course but here is the reason for most of the hate(besides overplaying which doesn't change the fact of the musical ability of the group) They were religious. I will admit this song is very emotional for me and will always be my song for my son as it just encompasses how you feel(most) when you have a child. Buuut I liked them before this song. One My Own Prison Are You Ready and Bullets rock. But it was the lyrics connected to religion that many(who probably wouldn't admit it) that many said they hated them. I am the opposite of religious yet I know a good inspirational song when I hear it and can ignore the fact they were "religious" and expressed it in their lyrics. This song is perfect.
