I was a teenager in Portland Oregon that was mainly listening to country music and watching MTV, so it's songs like this that opened my ears/eyes and mind to hip hop and metal and I feel like I am a better music enjoyer because of it.

I've been on a bit of a journey with this band.... I was 15 when they BLEW UP on TRL....and nu-metal kinda took over my listening tastes. Then...I got older, smoked weed, expanded my musical horizons, and concluded....yeah, Limp Bizkit indeed sucks. Then.....I got even older, realized all of life is kinda of one big joke and that LB always got that, from day one. They never pretended to be anything high and mighty. Hell, Fred ascended out of a f*cking toilet at their Woodstock show. Looking back on it all, and now seeing the band still around today, it's all pretty obvious that they decided to quite intentionally accept the nu-metal butt-rock frat/bro-rawk label and run with it....and really commit to THAT sound, that vibe, that aesthetic choice. And you know what? There's a certain creativity in doing that. These days the musical hipster elite reads Pitchfork articles about hyper-pop and how Max Martin written Britney Spears songs were legit groundbreaking. And I'm one of those people. I just happen to think nu-metal ALSO deserves a reassessment and some overdue respect. The truly good classic transcendent stuff always got the respect....think Tool and Deftones. But Orgy's first 2 albums, Korn's first 3 or 4 albums, LB's first 3 albums, hell...even Staind's Break the Cycle and Creed's trio of albums....they're all kinda sorta terrible....but also objectively excellent?? I still remember the day I was forced to do a double take concerning Limp Bizkit. I watched this random indie movie called The Education of Charlie Banks. It was quite good. Starred Jesse Eisenberg and Sebastian Stan....and was a coming of age movie set in the 70s about class hierarchy and the cycle of violence.....and it was a damn fine movie. Then the credits roll and I see......Directed by Fred Durst. Naturally I said out loud, "What?? That Fred Durst??" Sure enough as it turns out. And apparently he also hosted these jazz music nights or something. Made me reassess who the guy is. Also, and lastly, Wes Borland is nuts and can write chuggy semi-tone bendy dissonant harmonics riffage better than most anyone. I also like Coldplay for anyone who's keeping score. Those first 4 albums are all deeply solid albums. But Nickelback......irredeemable. And deservedly so. :D

Bullying and home life was so fukin awful and those bands were amongst many others to help release the rage I was desperately trying to contain. I swear, the real reason these bands are hated so much is because the people who hate them actually used to love them, but it was at a time where they themselves were cringey as hell because they were lame teenagers, like we all were. So when they hear this music from those bands, they remember back to the time they loved their music and what they were like back then and they are filled with shame and embarrassment and they transfer those feelings to the band because it's easier to hang shit on the music than themselves. I am guilty of this and noticed it in myself, that's where I developed this theory.

Look. Im 50 and when this came out I liked it. Today, I still like it. Its not a work of art or a musical masterpiece but when I hear it, I nod my head and enjoy myself and I'm unapologetic about it to.

"The cheese is layed on really, really thick right here" Agreed, but that's part of why I love it. The lyrics are entirely self-deprecating (my gf cheated on me but I stay with her for the 'nookie') and silly, which helps me take it less seriously and enjoy the silliness. Their own Spotify description ("Limp Bizkit is an infectious spirit. Any other details are salad dressing.") makes realize they're pretty self-aware with lyrics like "STICK IT UP YOUR (YEAH), STICK IT UP YOUR (YEAH). They're not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, but as someone who grew up on Linkin Park, I can definitely have some dumb fun to their songs. Helps that Wes Borland kinda slaps.

Their first album was raw, fresh, and very underrated. However, the cheese made them popular, so they embraced it on this album going forward. The band even has acknowledged that they became a parody of themselves, which led Wes Borland to pursue alternative avenues for a short period. The fact that they named their new album Still Sucks shows how fully aware of the cheese they are.

The first album is fkn awesome. Their best, without a question. It was much heavier, more serious and darker in tone than the latter ones. Hardcore and underground what I like to describe it. Imo, it's the perfect blend between metal and hip hop. It had much more pronounced, thicker bass, Fred showed that he is pretty good singer who can do clean vocals, solid rapping and surprisingly heavy screaming and also he can write solid lyrics, but he just choose much more mainstream and commercial direction with lighter and upbeat, party like sound with simple, catchy and kinda cheese lyrics..

Hated bands, for sure LB fits the bill. That being said, LB were massive in the late 90s early 2000s. Then, it became a fad to hate LB. They are incredible musicians, their shows were incredible. This song was MASSIVE @ the time.Also, Fred and Method Man did a track on this album. And Fred, killed it.

Their shows might've been incredible for kids who wanted to jump around and "break shit" in the pit. But for discerning people who don't buy into the hype; who love music, who love seeing bands and who use their ears... Not so incredible. They were an annoying short-lived fad band. Not just a fad to hate, but a fad to like too. Listening to them now, 20 years later, it's just laughably bad music with zero redeeming features.

The nice thing about being a metalhead is that I don't listen that intently to lyrics, so Limp Bizkit gave me the heavy angsty music (Wes Borland is well respected in the guitar/metal community) and I was young enough to appreciate the anger in Fred Durst's voice, in spite of how cheesy his lyrics were. No shame.

That's the thing a lot of non-metal heads have a hard time relating to. Generally the guitar riffs, sometimes the atmosphere, and sometimes the raw emotion are the hook, not necessarily the catchy vocals, though they can be a plus. But the actual lyrics easily take a backseat to all of that sometimes. With more extreme stuff people are like, "how do you listen to that, it's just a bunch of screaming?" I'm like, dude did you hear that killer ass riff behind the screaming?

I think I’m beginning to understand some of the hate, even though I’m not among the haters. Nookie, among some of the other songs Durst wrote, was never meant to be taken seriously. The “cheese” was 100% intentional… a kind of self-deprecating humor. That’s why it’s fun! It just never occurred to me that anyone would hear these lyrics and think it was meant, in any way, to be taken seriously. That said, if it weren’t for Wes Borland’s guitar work, I doubt Limp Bizkit would have ever even come close to the level of popularity they achieved.

If you guys decide to do a Redemption Reaction to the Hated Bands, I think I would put up "Re-Arranged". That is actually a decent song with Fred allowing the uniqueness of the sound to stand out, and the introspection stands in contrast to where everyone was at in 1999.

The Truth is their redemption song for me. The whole album wasn't that great but when I heard the first song, The Truth, I thought it was a new direction from Limp Bizkit that was really interesting and well executed. I thought it could be a new beginning for the band and re-establish them as band that could be taken seriously. But no, the album wasn't good enough as a whole and they didn't keep on pushing in that direction.

1999 was fun times man. Pre-September 11 world, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Slipknot etc all in their young and energetic phases made for some great live concerts. Music doesn't always have to be serious or majorly technically complex to just be fun to listen to with a bunch of other people enjoying the moment. 🤘

What I love about LB is that that they’re actually quite talented as musicians. Wes’s guitar riffs/effects, Lethal’s samples, Otto’s drumming, and Sam’s bass lined just meshed together so well. Furthermore, I’ll even add that Fred’s style of vocals (singing, screaming, and rap-flow) isn’t actually that bad… it’s just the lyrics that I feel are super cheesy. 😅

Limp Bizkits music is meant to be cheesy. Thats what i have always liked about them. They mix metal with hip hop and a little comedy. You either love it or you hate it. I do not believe there is an in between. I even like their new album Dad Vibes. Most of what i listen to is metal but i have always appreciated all different types of music anywhere from rap to metal to even country on rare occasions. LB came along back when MTV was still having those spring break shows and they fit in perfectly with that crowd.

Bands like Korn, deftones, and Rage Against the Machine paved the way for Limp Bizkit. Those bands were incorporating hip hop but were still seen as music for the outcasts. Limp Bizkit came along and the jocks gravitated toward them. That's why they were hated. They brought in people to that type of music that the fan base didn't want there.

Rage Against the Machine was arguably more popular do to their, ahem, rage against the Machine. Deftones were raw and outside the mainstream, and didn't really have much hip hop vibe. Limp Bizkit was hated because they brought the "bro" culture with them. At least the other bands you mentioned were rooted in something other than themselves.

The biggest issue for me with all of the bands that you mentioned is over saturation. You couldn't get away from it all. At the time, they started out fun, but there was just too much of them after a while. They didn't even need to have anything happening like a new album, to have them shoved in our faces.

What can I say man?..as a black kid/teenager back then, I loved Limp Bizkit. Loved rock, loved rap and they were a great mix, especially as a teen rebelling. Especially the songs Break stuff, My Generation and some others I can't remember atm...it's been 20 years. I had metal/rock bands I recognized as waaaay better than this shit, same goes for hiphop... But they were unique when it came to mixing the two.

Nookie came out around 98'/'99. Kid Rock-'Cowboy'. Cher- 'Believe' Len-'Steal My Sunshine' Smash Mouth- 'All-Star' Bare Naked Ladies- 'One Week' Lou Bega- 'Mamba No 5' Madonna- 'Ray Of Light' Lenny Kravitz-' Fly Away' LFO- 'Summer Girls' Sugar Ray- 'Every Morning' Eve 6- 'Tongue Tied' Lit- ' My Own Worst Enemy' Harvey Danger- 'Flagpole Sitta' Eagle-Eye Cherry- 'Save Tonight' Backstreet Boys- 'Everybody(Backstreets Back) Third Eye Blind- 'Jumper' Santana- 'Smooth' ...I lived with a friend breifly and remember all these songs in heavy rotation in the summer of '99. The music itself is what I enjoy the most from Limp Bizkit, whether it be a guitar riff, small interesting bass line or lick or a drum fill. The band in Limp Bizkit have always been phenomenal players, Wes Borland especially. I highly recommend some of Black Light Burns’ first album. It’s basically Borland with different members from NIN, APC, & Puscifer. Highly agree with some other commenters on doing a redemption series for each of these bands though, what a fantastic idea!

It got me through a lot of pent up rage I had due to relentless bullying at school and an unbearable home life. Same with Linkin Park but I'll always adore them. Grew up in this era LOVE the first 3 LB albums...my belief is the people that "hate" bizkit is because they loved the first album up until Faith was released as a single..then they became wildly popular, thus losing the effect of it being "their band", that was their "sell-out" song, and this was the "sell-out" album...all untrue but thats what people think. Fred's early feud with Slipknot also forced some fans to pick sides at that time. Also some Nu-Metal fans were NOT ready for full blown Rap-Metal, i.e. LB and LINKIN PARK. Some people also just dont like Fred for his ties with MTV TRL/Carson Daly at the time...all nonsense...their first 3 albums are part of the history of nu-metal/rap metal alongside KoRn, Deftones, Incubus, and others. Hopefully someone reads this. :)

I understand why pure metal heads hate alternative-rock / nu-metal bands like Limp Bizkit however as a white dude from Brooklyn New York that grew up around the time this band came out; it brought a lot of my black friends who predominantly liked hiphop to grow an interest in rock and from Limp Bizkit; expanded their interest to pure metal bands that they would’ve never listened to if they didn’t start with something like Limp Bizkit.

This is a great assessment. I liked the first album. I bought it when I heard that it was DJ Lethal's (House of Pain) metal band. I wasn't a big fan of Fred because he sounded like one of them douchie dudes that is always having women problems and crying about it when the solution is to just leave the bitch, lol. I can't relate to dudes who constantly write about women, but I thought all of the other elements were good. Instrumentally, the band is incredibly talented. The first album was raw and angry. I think Significant Other turned me off because it was too produced. Very slick and clean sounding. Where the first album was aggressive, they really tamed that down on the 2nd album. What was aggressive to Eminem fans was not really aggressive to metal fans who bought the first album. Plus, the 2nd album gave Fred a platform to further express his douchiness, lol. I would have preferred if Fred would have taken on lyrical themes closer to Wu Tang, Nas, or even Downset or Biohazard, but I get it. Fred wasn't from the streets. He was a rich suburban kid from Jacksonville, so he wrote about rich suburban kid from Jacksonville themes, lol.

I loved this when it came out. I grew up in the inner city. And grew up on old BDP, Run DMC , LL Cool J ,. I also was into Black Sabbath, Metallica , Guns n Roses.I caught the vibe that this was not meant to be taken that seriously. It was fun groove orientated. Again not serious. And it was almost like a stab at the angst driven post grunge music. And a slight stab at some.of the hip hop that was coming out then as well. So I think Fed was like F them both. I would place this at the end of the day in the same category as Vanilla Ice. Right. No one likes it. But it went platinum, and anytime it comes on. People get up .. dance and know every word.

It's hard to really understand why this is so hated unless you lived through it. Nu-metal (rap/rock) in general was polarizing because it was a fusion of 2 very different genres that hadn't really been done yet, at least not at this level of "success". The bands name is kind of childish, with the purposeful incorrect spelling. Then you have Fred Durst who pretty much thrived on hate and embraced it. And obviously theres the lyrical content. I happen to love Limp Bizkit but I can see why this is a hated song. Good content as always! Can't wait for more 🤘

This was one of the first albums I ever bought and I loved the band as a kid. I abandoned them after I became a teenager though. Looking back, Wes Borland was a unique guitar player, able to create interesting hip-hop inspired riffs. The bassline in this song is also really catchy. Instrumentally, I think LB are better than they get credit for. However, I'm not a fan of Fred Durst's lyrics, rapping, or persona as a whole. If you replaced Durst with anybody else, I'm sure the music wouldn't receive as much criticism. Your review was spot-on and echoed my thoughts exactly.

Limp Bizkit really blew the door open for a very special era in history for a generational window. If you were born around the turn of the 90's and found yourself ages between 8 - 14 during the attitude era of WWE, Limp Bizkit's 'My Way' will always bring a tear of nostalgia. It was used in promotion of Wrestlemania X-Seven and the promos for the Rock vs. Austin and that really boosted the popularity of LB, and this style of music. Then it started being used and pushed everywhere making it the sound of the early 00's.

I actually like this song, used to jam to it at the bar when I was drunk circa 2000. The reason most people hate Limp Bizkit is because it was rammed down our throats 24/7 for over a decade. It was inescapable. Radio, MTV (when that was a thing), parties, bars, cars driving by. I love pizza. If you force me to eat at gunpoint for 1,000 days in a row, my pizza loving days are over. While I loved LP and they were probably my introduction to rock back in the early 2000s, their lyrics are cheesy too. Chester had a good voice (on the first two albums specifically), agreed there, (the song "System" from the Queen of the Damned soundtrack is his best imo) and the Live in Texas performance is still killer. But aside from having a relatively unique (albeit simplistic) sound on their first 2 albums, their later albums are just mediocre, predictable pop-rock.

Should check out anything from that album (3 dollar bill) really, Counterfeit was the best single. Pollution, Stuck, Leech are also good songs. Faith cover was what got them big though.

"Nookie" is my least favorite of LB's most popular songs. However, you can't deny the talent of the musicians. They wouldn't have made millions of dollars if they didn't have the talent. It just may not be for everyone! Wes Borland is a freaking animal on the guitar. Fred Durst is a showman...even without the red Yankees hat. DJ Lethal can scratch with the best of them. John Otto is a decent drummer, who sounds better in concert. Sam Rivers isn't in the same category as John Entwistle, Flea, Geddy Lee, Les Claypool or Victor Wooten....but who is??? The bass grooves are catchy though. I love what you guys do! Keep up the good work!

Limp Bizkit and Eminem were my gateway into rap and metal. I was in school in 1998 in England, we had our own whole scene back then. English peeps, come like this comment cos you know what I'm talking about! We had garage and drum and bass back then. But this was the era of the 'grunger'. Korn were the ones for me; I always loved metal but not the subculture. Korn played REAL metal but they dressed like Run DMC. THAT was what did it for me. I was in school listening to metal but wearing Air Max and French Connection 🤣 I'm 35 now and still dress like a yuppie, but metal will always be my scene. I went to a Decapitated gig dressed in bright orange Air Max and got dirty looks all night. I watched Slayer and Metallica in seats drinking white wine. Metal fans want their scene to be exclusive, but it will only be if you do THE OPPOSITE of what other scenes do. Bun your eliteness and gatekeeper nonsense. Music is for everyone. If someone discovers metal through the Black album, that's beautiful. Don't be a dick. Love is the way forward.
