Creedence Clearwater Revival was an American rock band that gained popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a number of successful singles drawn from various albums. The group consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter John Fogerty, his brother and rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford.

great job. its such a simple but effective bass line isn't it ? I mean simple in form but almost complex in arrangement. I really dig how the bass at times follows the lead guitar line but yet stays all to its own. and how cool is it that cowbell waits till 2:30 to pop in there. thanks again for sharing, really seems like they don't make classic bass lines like they used to.

@TeamMastaPr2 i meant it's not "wrong", but it is wrong ;-) i was just trying to explain where the confusion came from, D is the 7th degree of E, C# is the 6th. both can be used for an E7 chord without sounding "wrong", but in this song it's the 6th, not the 7th that's in the original riff

@TeamMastaPr2 it's not wrong because it sounds fine, but it sounds very different to me... anyway it's because one is the 7th of the chord and the other is the 6th of the chord (which is E7), and both are suitable for a dominant chord

@foobargorch I meant that the main riff is played a bit different by CCR's bassist Stu Cook. Stu plays it like this: E, BC#BC#E, E, BC#BC#B ... infusion26 plays with D instead of C#.
@Kelkat66
@Kelkat66 4 жыл бұрын
I noticed that it is mostly transcribed with the C# on the internet. But to me it sounds better with the way Infusion plays it with the D. I was curious as to how others play and why Infusion went with the D?

@infusion26 It's just one thing: it looks like your playing BDBD during the main riff, it's actually BC#BC# (I know also because I've seen Stu Cook play in this way), but at the same time it didn't song wrong...

Just playing it on my own bass guitar. I'm trying to decide if I should play it with the D or the C#. The way Infusion plays it sounds better then when I try it with the C#.

weird (and I'm probably wrong) but at 1:50 I hear him playing: D,D A,A E B,D,E B,D,E ****** but his fingers don't match the B,D,E B,D,E they look like they're doing B,B,D and then at 3:30 he accidentally has his finger on the E instead of D for the D,D, A,A, E He pulls it off quickly, but there is no audible flub. Then for the A you can see that he is panicking and pushes the string up instead of getting on top of it - and still no audible flub. Then the walk after that looks not as smooth as it sounds either. With the first stuff, I thought that I just couldn't figure it out, or my mind and ears were messing me up (like usual) But then I saw the second flub, and now I am a full fledged conspiracy theorist. What is going on???

It's C# BUT BUT BUT B sounds better. Either way it doesn't come out "wrong" per se. Stu played C#, sure. But to my ear B just sounds better. Either way you play in it's grooving little bass line the pulls you into the tune and keeps you there.

it is a C# to my ear, it sounds right when you play the c# on the Estring at the 9th fret than on the A string, hence the ambiguity of the tone, especially if you use flats

rhythm is ok but can't you hear that you are playing the wrong pitches? That D is just so sour sounding it makes my teeth hurt, try a C# instead (talking about the main riff that runs through every verse - E-B-C#)

She's probably hearing the guitar not the bass. What makes this song so interesting is the bass hitting the 6th against the guitar on the 7th. But no worries, if it sounds good to you then enjoy playing it the way you hear it. :)

Sorry infusion, but you're wrong. Maybe she's hearing something else, or maybe the bass frequencies are just tricking her because they're sometimes harder to hear. But if you want visual proof, check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWqufKJuor9oe9E At 0:49, it's simply unmistakable that he's playing C# notes at fret 9 on string 4. You can see several in a row.

@circusoftheseed 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely a C#. I'm not knocking your video, your playing is good, but there's no question it's a C#. The D gives it a more minor Penatonic sound, but if you listen close to the recording, you'll hear the bass sounds a little more "major" or "happy" because of the C#, which is the 6'th degree of the E major scale.
@robsmith5434

I know this is old but I just transcribed this tune for a student and it's definitely a C#. The guitar part is emphasizing a D but the main bass part is E B C# B C# E E B C# B C# B.

@@infusion26 It is C# for sure Info.. Not to talk down your generally great bass playing but the C# gives it a slightly different vibe to the Git and makes the song have that feel. That was the great thing about Creedence. A lot of people thought they were simple musicians, but very few bands could catch their 'sound' when trying to play their music. Eg, everyone tried playing Proud Mary in D, whereas Fogerty stepped it down to D tuning, thus giving it that full big sound. Same here with Bayou, a nice did to their understanding of musical theory. Stu was a classically trained pianist after all.

@@infusion26 You are WRONG about the C#. Go watch any Creedence video of Born on the Bayou and you'll see the bass player with index finger on the seventh fret going back and forth to the C# with his ring finger. Live and Learn.

The dispute about D vs. C# seems to be due to versions. In the various "Live At Woodstock" videos such as this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWqufKJuor9oe9E, the audio has D. At 0:49 he looks to me to be playing D with his pinkie although Gary and Chad seem to disagree. Regardless, the audio is D. Infusion's girlfriend, come home. On the other hand, the audio in "Official Lyric Video" kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJS3gnaEo9l6e9U, and other recordings such as kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZCxfYmkiraVg6M, clearly have C#.
