Southern Rock, there isn't a section at the record store as swamp rock. When your talking about the Louisiana swamps, it has a feel to it, like if you hear traffic you think city, and you can describe some Southern Rock as swamp rock, swampy feel, whatever. But the genre is Southern Rock, all the way from Cali!

CCR is famous for their legendary "swamp boogie" soundscape. But what makes their sound so amazing is that no one from the band is from the bayou or even the south! All four of them are from northern California. The vibe is a complete fabrication and one of the greatest creative feats in classic rock. Combined with their songwriting and performace chops, they are quite possibly the best American rock band of all time.

I grew up in a small town near Tahoe. In the 90's I worked as a life guard at the local pool and in the summer one of the school teachers worked there too as a life guard for extra money. I loved CCR (still do) and had it playing one day on the pool speakers. This teacher told me he and his friends in the 70's would go and watch CCR all the time in the bay area before they got famous. Back then, no internet, I thought he was totally full of shit. So I went and researched it and found that CCR was from San Francisco and not Louisiana blew my head apart.

You can’t confuse John’s voice or guitar playing with anyone else. My parents took me to Woodstock when I was 12. They didn’t even get on stage until after midnight. I was one of a few people still awake. I was so miserable..cold, wet and covered in mud. Playing with a few other kids was fun and made the time go by faster. Looking back I feel so lucky to have been there. It’s something I will never forget.

With this level of talent all in one place, no one was billed as the headliner.

"Cotton Fields" is a traditional American folk song from the southern states and CCR does it right! Really terrific harmonies. "When I was an itty bitty baby my mama would rock me in the cradle in them old cotton fields back home!" We used to sing that in grade 7 and 8 music classes, and did we ever love it back in 1971 and 72! You two need to pick up a copy of John Fogerty in concert in LA in his 2005 DVD called "The Long Road Home." He finally was persuaded to let it fly with all his CCR hits and this concert is FUN with a capital F from one end to the other!

There are two California bands that IMO are "the most southern bands from outside the south": Credence Clearwater Revival, and Little Feat. I have no idea how they got that swampy and funky all the way out there on the West Coast, but they sound like they were born and bred here. Whatever is the southern equivalent of "an invite to the cookout," they both earned one.

10:02 Yeah I agree. They helped define the Southern Rock genre. Along with other legendary bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, etc... You could make a case for many bands being in that genre like ZZ Top, BLS, Kid Rock, Charlie Daniels Band, Marshall Tucker Band, etc. But they are more on the outskirts. CCR and Lynyrd Skynyrd top the list for me but others include: Black Oak Arkansas, Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, Allman Brothers, Outlaws, Blackberry Smoke and more. The influence of Southern Rock stretches out to many, even on the harder side like Corrosion of Conformity.

Believe it or leave it. These guys are from Northern California. I thought they were from the South for years (we didn't have the interwebs). Soul, grit, and truth. John Fogerty is a brilliant song writer, singer, and arranger. Timeless sound and feel. Sadly another victim of soul crushing record companies and bad contracts. They couldn't perform live under their own name and didn't really get paid until just a few years ago. They've been a staple in my music library since 1968.

I was about 15 when this song first come out and was hooked from the first few bars. There was just something magical about CCR! I mean even aside from John's voice. The songs were all really pretty simple but somehow the way all the parts fit together was perfection! Ironically I think it was the ever so slight imperfections that make it "perfect". Now days most music is locked to a rigid mechanical grid and the different parts are added one at a time and polished and edited to perfection. What gives this tune (and a lot of the music of the 60's) that incredible vibe, FEEL and groove is it's essentially a recording of a jam session with all of them playing together at the same time.

CCR cranked out a string of iconic hits in the early sixties and seventies that defined the era. That distinctive down home Southern Rock sound along with Fogerty’s vocals made them one of a kind that you just couldn’t get enough of every time they played. You really need to listen to some of John Fogerty’s solo and later music. Try “Old Man Down the Road” or “Vantz Can’t Dance” for updated but classic Fogerty.

dam I love this song! My fav CCR tune. For another smokin hot fun song, "Ramble, Tamble". That's a jubilee shuffle song with some amazing energy. Parts of the song are played to a polka beat.

CCR will always be my one my all time favorite bands! I can name some many. My mom and dad were so fortunately to grow up through some of best decades of music. My dad was born in 1935 and saw some shit. My mom was born in 1944 and would ever day after school(she went to an all girls Catholic school back than) she would would walk past America Bandstand as both my parents grew up in Philly. Dad from North Philly and Mom grew up in West Philly.

CCR is an amazing band. You should do Travelin' Band next, to hear them rock hard and fast.

Brings me way back in time, riding in my daddy’s candy apple red ‘76 Bronco with the top down. We lived on an East Texas bayou and Daddy loved CCR ✌🏻

Great tune! There's a couple other great ones off their 2nd album, "Graveyard Train" & "Penthouse Pauper". Y'all prolly won't get many requests for these 2 as they're not on the greatest hits album and that's all that seems to be requested by most, but definitely worth a listen..Keep Rollin🤘🏼

MUST do the 11 minute studio version of "Heard it Through the Grapevine " So transcendental, it feels more like 3-4 minutes of awesomeness.

CCR. Swampy dirty sound. “Up around the Bend” “Run through the Jungle” “Fortunate Son” and one of the best rhythm groove playing bands ever.

Love love love CCR! These guys were amazing and funky and soulful and all around wonderful!!! “I Put a Spell on You” and “Long as I Can See the Light” are two of my favorites. John Fogarty’s voice is like heaven in a swamp! Great choice. Love your channel. Please check out Linda Ronstadt. 🌺✌️
