I try very hard to avoid political arguments online, and I won't start now, but I saw someone comment that this song was "anti-American". It is not. It is anti-war. And against a specific war, at that. And for that matter, it's not so much against the war, necessarily, but against how rich and powerful men decided the war should be fought, but the poor and working men were the ones who fought it, and killed and died.

This is one of the iconic songs that was a protest about Vietnam war. The rich families and political families were getting their children out of the draft. Everyone else got drafted and had to go to war. They were actually from California. But they definitely honed in on the southern rock sound. Asia I love you too. I'm now a widow and my kids and grand kids have so much on their plates I don't see them very often or hear from them. They live 10 minutes from me. Anyway, you make me smile every day. You have such a sweet spirit. Thank you

This is not really a southern anthem but anthem sang against the war in vietnam since many rich peoples children were able to evade the draft with their connections. Well or rather with their fathers connections (aka senators and wealthy businessman).

Yes - the Fortunate Sons were the ones able to avoid the draft, and the song is from the perspective of the soldiers who had to go. Easy to miss that reference because most people today take the meaning to be simply a class thing. Great that Asia and BJ did pick up that it was a protest though.

During the Vietnam war every young man received a draft card when they turned 18. They had no choice. At that time they didn't even know where Vietnam was. The wealthy people or those who knew the right people, could get their sons out of going to war. That war. was fought by middle class, poor and minority young men. That is what the song is about.

I turned 18 in 74 but in 73 they sent me draft notice, I sent it back with a long letter detailing all their bullshit and said come get me I ain’t doing it. They actually wrote my high school getting them to help. In the end I was told they would let me graduate a 1/2 credit short if I would sign up. I did but wrote and said I was only doing it because the war was winding down and there was a better chance I would be fighting for the IRA than in Vietnam.

If anything they must have felt I wasn’t worth the effort by that point. No way I was going to be he last person to die especially and unless Nixon’s kids were right beside me.

Long Beach?!!! don't know where you got that. They are from the Bay Area, but were heavily influenced by southern folk blues. The Fogerty brothers lived in El Cerrito but the band rehearsed and recorded in Berkeley, basically a two mile difference. Their rehearsal space Cosmo's Factory was a converted old auto shop next door to the original The North Face factory. I remember hearing first hand that The NF staff would be entertained when they rehearsed. They recorded at Fantasy Studios a mile down the street.

The song had to deal with having wealthy parents or politically powerful parents who could keep their children out of the draft therefore keeping them out of the Vietnam War! In other words even if they got drafted they'd go to the Coast Guard or they'd be able to get some kind of desk job so they wouldn't be involved in any fighting!

This brings me back. My oldest brother joined at 17 became a recon marine in 67. My father an air force officer signed for him. After being wounded twice the 2nd time losing the use of his arm. My father told me and my other brothers that we will never join the military. My brother took me to protest and I remember being tear-gassed at 9 years old running away through the campus. I look at the Iraq war and it tells me, nothing has changed. This song is still true today.

I really had a lot of respect for the draftees because most of them knew they were going to NAM and didn't think twice about it. This song is an anti -Vietnam war anthem. The sentiment at the time was that only the poor were getting drafted, hence the title of the song. This song could be considered Anti-American because it is dividing people by rich and poor. Remember that all the officers were college educated (rich) young men. This song was very controversial at the time. Is it Patriotic or un-patriotic? It depends on how you feel about war or defending your country. Should we have been in Vietnam? An 18 year old boy is going to have a different view than an 18 year old girl or a parent of a draft age son. I remember when my oldest brother got his draft card in the mail. Scarey! By then the war was winding down and we were getting out and he didnt have to go.

My older brother signed up for two terms in Vietnam, and came home with a Purple Heart and a bad case of PTSD for his troubles that still plagues him today. So much for his bravery. This song is about injustice. We were NOT "defending our country." My draft board yanked me out of a happy life in 1965, and changed everything forever. Now, 56 years later, I still haven't made it back home. "Home" no longer exists - it's just a distant memory.

They are not from the South but were born and raised in the San Fransisco area, though they composed music they thought would sound like it came from Louisiana. I was just a 10 or 12 year old kid when this came out and it was definitely an anti-Vietnam war song. On the Canadian prairies where I grew up CCR was _THE_ number one rock band in the late 1960s and early 1970s! They are still a staple of the Classic Rock stations here today! Jangling electric guitars like this were music to our ears, quite literally. Still love CCR today and listen to them regularly! There were virtually no guitar pedals back then, so you really had to have good tone in your fingertips when you played electric guitar! You two have got to liberate yourselves from the lesser forms of music popular today and find out why the baby boomers don't listen to anything but Classic Rock! 🎸👌🎶😉💖😎🎸 Though I do gladly listen to anything from So Hyang. You know for a band from San Francisco, CCR sure had a back woods, black water, swampy sound to them in most of their songs. They always gave me a Louisiana Bayou vibe. Even had a hit song 'Born On A Bayou'. Have you ever heard Bad Moon Rising? Many of their songs were politically inspired, anti-war songs, but all very good laid back, beer drinking songs. CCR is one of the greatest bands ever. While they’re known for their short songs, their long songs are fire too. They did a ton of anti-war songs and this was one. The lead singer, John Fogerty, was also the writer of the majority, if not all, of their music. They have so much soul and strength in their music. I absolutely dig it.

John Fogerty wrote all the hits, sang all the hit, and played lead guitar on all the hits. And he was the youngest one in the group - bangs on the right hand side.

The song is short so that it gets out and played on radio, so it reaches a max audience. From those opening stark, dark chords that tell you "settle down, this is a serious message", it gets right to the point. No extra musician frills, just straight message, and it's all about Vietnam grinding up the youth population, and some "fortunates" could get out of it while the less "fortunates" (it ain't me) could not. And every young man had to walk around wondering "are they coming for me next" and protests against it were springing up as often as the news of the war. That's what this is, a protest. And when you heard it on the radio as a "hit single", the message got out and we young men were encouraged, that "you are not alone and here's a like-minded message for you, stay strong".

Big time Vietnam war, Many rich didn't have to serve or were given soft positions while the common peoples sons went to war. Thus not a Fortunate Son. "Run through the Jungle" is so primal! you should check it out! "Bad Moon on the Rise" "Born on the Bayou"

CCR was very big during the vietnam war, this song is about the "fortunate" ones that didn't have serve in the war because momma or Daddy was Elite! Everytime I listen to CCR, I go back to the time of the war!
