Hey John if you lay the dipnet on its side in between the measuring board and the water they will jump into the net instead of the water. I have watched Greg Blanchard and Alex Rudd do that. It has saved Greg several times. I'm loving these kayak tourney vids. I agree fishing for fun is the best kind of fishing. 👊👍

In my opinion fishing is all about carma some day's!and John loses a fish almost every tournament he fishes,so i think that's why he does pretty good because of his good attitude!

Hey John , great catches and way to catch 3 species in a tournament. One suggestion on your bump board. IF you angle is downward it helps to keep the mouth closed and also place your net at that end as well will help from flopping fish escaping back into the water. I hope this little tip works for you.

John, you make someone feel like they're fishing with you. Your humility and laid back demeanor, I believe, is why you're building up your viewership. Keep going with that. And this is coming from a fellow believer in Jesus. And as always, love your videos! P.s. That smallmouth was a winner, my stomach sank when it flipped out of your kayak😅

I know everyone and their brother wants to tell everyone and their brother how to fish, but I have one little piece of advice too. If you dip your measuring board in the water before you put your fish on it they often will be a little more calm, especially on warmer days. As everyone else said as well, tipping the board downward with the net adjacent to it saves tourney days. All of this I learned from Greg Blanchard. Anyway, this video was just awesome. I'm super happy to see how far you've come in these kayak tournaments. It keeps me motivated to keep doing them myself.

This is the same kayak as the Angler 100. Just a different name. What a great kayak! Very stable, tracks wonderfully, and really glides through the water. So glad that I bought it.

I feel your pain with the fish getting away! I am currently in a KBF monthly challenge and I have lost a few fish this month that would have helped me out in the tournament. The worst one by far though I caught a giant 19.5 inch smallmouth in Drakes creek and I paddled over to shore to make sure it didnt flop back in the water. I got a perfect picture of it and released it only to realize you arent able to see my kayak in the background so it wont count. I was super bummed but just glad I was able to catch the fish.

Cool man. Tourneys are fun fun fun. Ive lost a bunch of fish off board, including a 4 lber. Esp my 1st couple tourneys before I figured it out. These are my BEST TIPS for measuring process-This is all from personal experience I promise you.. Angle the board at as steep an angle as you can, with the end that fishs head goes against down low in the hull of boat (i rest it against my foot so my leg can also block fish from flipping into water) then i put other end up high. That way all fishs weight is pressing it into that wall on his head (it calms them down, like if you hang off a couch head first you get dizzy)- make fishs head lowest point. Also put your net on the head side so if he jumps and doesnt hit your leg or hull of kayak, he goes in the net. And id get a bigger net--with a bigger opening and longer reach……it will help your landing percentage being able to reach out further, as well as make a bigger area of protection off side of measuring board when they jump off board. Set it up vertical at head end of board, and slant the board like i said above toward the net. Thet way if they jump or flip, physics dictates they have to launch off the board into the net. If board is flat across hull, They could flip either direction so net would only be 50/50 If it helps, write your identifier on your hand, or make or buy identifier mount where it flips up off the side of board…..so its always in the center of your pic. That way u can get much quicker pics and dont gotta worry bout sliding indentifier around and moving camera further out to get it in the pic- its always there. Lastly, buy a cal coast hawg leash. Best investment i ever bough- like 20 bucks. If you get a fish that is being stupid and you cannot get a pic and u know he been out water a while, clip the lip clip to him and put him back in the water for a couple mins. The leash is springy, so as he swims off and tries to dart away, its resistance, it’ll wear him out a lil bit more, and it will get him back in the water to breathe if he beennout a while. Also i usually clip every fish on it for a min while i get my board and phone ready and set up my net on side of board-- so they arent out of water while im doing that for long periods of time; take care of your fish. Then i’ll take couple pics of every fish and release them. Make sure you know how to clip the fishs lip right on hawg leash--a buddy got one and didnt check that clip was locked and lost a fish off hawg leash. But they cant get off if you do it right. Its the same kinda clip that digital scales use, so you should have some experience with it. And thats all I got, best of luck to you!!
