It is excellent. People want quick solutions, don't want to put the work in, get frustrated and give up too soon. The common complaint in the comments sections seems to be "I can't play barre chords!!" I can understand that somewhat, but guitar is an instrument you need to spend hours per day, months of practice on, so other than the highly naturally talented, it doesn't come overnight. In this case the high e, b strings don't necessarily have to come in to play, one can get by in this song without them if they are muffled/buzz when you hold the barre. If you are so poor at bar chords that you can't get a clean tone out of the g string that is a problem, but work on developing your hand/finger strength and proper positioning of your thumb behind the neck (that seems to be the problem for most). There are ways to play this in open form chords too, but these players probably also lack the knowledge of theory to transpose. So learn what makes a chord happen from its root, why is it minor? 7th? Suspended/diminished? One guy was saying he couldn't get notes out of the C minor on the 8th fret...so play it on the 3rd fret with the Am open chord shape if that is easier (it seems for a lot of people it is easier to play a barre on the higher frets sometimes and it should be on an electric with nice action, lighter gauge strings)...or put a capo on the 3rd fret for the first G phrase and that Cm (play the Emajor/A minor open shapes) and bar only the 7th and 8th (have to change very last chord position though). There is a way around everything. If you cannot master the two string (with D string muted) octave climbs and descents, well you are lost and have no business attempting this or most any other song yet really. This guy Carl is terrific, what a service he provides for beginner/intermediate players!! Few people are going to pick up a guitar and only practice a couple hour a week hoping that, one morning a year from now, they will wake up a guitar God.

Any suggestions on how to build that strength? Some have told me "keep playing it over and over" and I have, for years, and nothing seems to change much.
@szalonysebcio59 жыл бұрын
shakedaddy1 Try to use your thumb less and hour whole arm more, right arm to be exact ;) Try tu pull the guitar body to you with your right hand andthe guitar neck to you with your left hand (jut do it carefully, as you don't want to break the guitar's neck). You won't have to use so much strenght from your thumb to hold the barre chord. Anyway, you can always train your hand muscles (squeezing some kind of little ball in your palm for example).

Change your acoustic! Or at least go to a store and try a few out. I bet you it's the neck shape. I basically gave it to a hobo. Best thing I ever did. Actually he's probably all crippled up in the hands now....jesus. I'm a monster!

This might be bad advice but you know what helped me improve (especially with barre chords) when I felt stuck? Just leaving it. Stop fixating on it. I played other songs. I practiced other things. I took a few days off playing guitar. I stopped trying so hard and somehow it naturally came to me. I think it’s also about courage and attitude, if that makes sense. Instead of panicking about getting it right just do it, even if it sounds terrible at first. To quote my favourite green little man: “Do or do not - there is no try.”
