The bad endings that get me the most are the endings i like to call 'oblivious good endings' where the cast is celebrating and everything seems fine but you as the player either get a hint from the game that the evil isn't truly defeated or knowledge you have acquired from getting a different ending on a previous run that the evil is still at large in this "good" ending and soon after the credits are over this evil will undo everything you did and destroy everything and everyone you experienced in this game.

I consider the submarine ending to be even more horrifying than you make it out to be, because it's likely EVERYONE dies in that one, including Ace and Snake. Ace dies, because you need a total of 26 to get past the last door, but of course, he's not going to know that. By the time he figures it out (if at all), the incinerator door has already closed, sealing his fate. Snake dies, because no-one comes to save him from the coffin. The eventual rising waters probably caused him to drown. Even if the coffin were air-tight, he would've suffocated to death, instead, which isn't exactly any better! (Man, why did I have to bring either of these to mind?!)

Fun fact: In a scrapped bad ending concept for munches oddysee, Munch had a completely different and even more disturbing & slow, painful death Instead of munch basically being killed by having his lungs torn out alive....Munch and lady margaret (the queen of the glukkons) literally would have been stitched together at the chest like something out of the human centipede with munch still alive...albet now being permanently forced to "share" with her. This fate honestly would have been worse for munch to have had than the bad ending we actually got...because Munch is now literally stuck to the glukkon Queen for the rest of his life, unable to escape or move. And during that time, Munch likely would have suffered a very slow agonizing death because now that he and the queen share the same lungs: he basically will suffer constant pain from the queen smoking(she is a chain smoker like other glukkons). His only hope for finally escaping for this painful mortal coil is for the day that Lady margaret finally burns out her new lungs and they both likely die,

Another reason why Munch's Bad Ending is so dark is this is implied to have happened to Munch's friends, family & relatives. They got captured in giant nets (the "webs"), put into Gabbit Pens inside the Fluid Tanks area, then the Vykkers literally saw out their lungs while they're conscious because Vykkers are sadists. 🤢 This ending is grim...

That scene of munch screaming in agony as you hear the drills in the background and the heart monitor going crazy before abruptly stopping, though, is something straight out of a horror movie. Legit had nightmares after seeing it.

I find that the bad endings that say and show very little are the ones that get me the most. In particular, the frenzied flame ending from Elden Ring comes to mind. It starts off with your character collapsing to the ground (the same animation as when you're killed by the madness status, except your body doesn't fade away). When the cutscene starts, you're shown a close-up of Marika's head crumbling to dust before your character stands back up, but with a giant flame of frenzy orb where their head should be. As the flames start spreading, your character almost appears to be celebrating and reveling in the destruction they're about to cause (keep in mind, the Tarnished never animates like this anywhere else in the game. The most expressive he/she gets is lowering themselves into a fighting stance before the start of a fight). Then the scene fades out and when it fades back in, you see the results of your actions: the yellow flames of frenzy spreading across the world, consuming all of existence, and a huge yellow eye extending out from the remains of the Erd tree watching over it all. There's no narration, no screams of agony, nothing. Then the scene fades out and the credits roll. It gives the upbeat and triumphant sounding credits music (which itself is unusual for a From Software game) a really sinister undertone, knowing that you basically started the apocalypse.

The Dung Eater ending is a close second. You can see how wrong the sky looks, and even though all the game says about the Seedbed and Fell Curses is that it ends the cycle of reincarnation (which doesn't even sound too bad at first glance, since reincarnation is consistently shown to *_suck_* in Fromsoft games), considering what the Dung Eater presumbaly does to plant the Seedbed Curse (anyone versed in japanese mythology knows that his name is probably a "nice" way of calling him a Devourer of Soul), it may be just as horrible as the Frenzied Flame ending, only more... subdued. Subtle. Implied. Honestly, I love Dung Eater precisely because he's essentially a dark mirror of us, in Dark Souls. We, too, kill everyone in our way, mostly because it's standing there, and use their Souls to level up, get stronger. At the time, that's just how it was. Dung Eater now shows how anyone else would view us if anyone sane was still left. A monstrous serial killer, that can't even be killed, because he just keeps coming back.

As it stands, all you get is a close-up of your Tarnished on the throne, about 5 lines of dialogue, and a different colored sky depending on who you sided with. Admittedly, though, yeah, Dung Eater's ending is pretty bleak because of the implications. Still, I think the frenzied flame ending is by far the worst possible outcome for the Lands Between. You essentially help a demon succeed in his plan to destroy the world, and you're cast aside the moment you've outlived your usefulness (you can't convince me that Shabriri isn't possessing the player's body during the ending). I don't believe the theories that it's a "Noah, get the boat!" type ending. I'm pretty sure the world just ends with little chance of anything rising out of the ashes.

That's an interesting way of looking through the past and give your own thoughts about. If I had to make my own top 10 most effective CBEs and trying to explain why it would be like this: 1) CBE 16 (Splatterhouse 3) 2) CBE 89 (Corpse party) 3) CBE 42 (Waxworks) 4) CBE 36 (Ace attorney Justice for all) 5) CBE 27 (Dead rising 2) 6) CBE 43 (Soulblade) 7) CBE 65 (oddworld munch's odyssey) 8) CBE 35 (Pikmin) 9) CBE 1 (Streets of rage 3) 10) CBE 77 (Shenmue) The reasons? 1) CBE 16: I'll just come in and say it, this is *the only* CBE that gave me a legitimate nightmare / hard time sleeping, the whole situation happening with Jennifer is already creepy and obnoxious by itself, but the one factor that made this truly creepy for me was the soundtrack playing during the scenes where jennifer begins turning into a mindless monster... that soundtrack is the ultimate *leave my mind" and "leave my ears" material. The worst part is that even if jennifer dies on chapter 1, that horrible soundtrack will still play during the chapter 2 scenes, and those scenes are still creepy enough, not on Jennifer's levels but close. It just goes to show how effective and important are the soundtracks in videogames. Without it this wouldn't even be in the top 10. But I can't listen to this or watch those scenes in the night or else I know I'll have trouble sleeping because of that damn soundtrack. 2) CBE 89: Funnily enough, the only ending tha truly got to me is on this list (godamn you git). The yuka bad ending. The one area I feel sensitive about is when it comes to the eye, just thinking about gives me the creeps. Tho for some reasons when some movies try to do something about that (example Saw II) I don't really feel anything disturbing nor sickening, it's weird but I can watch those just fine. But the corpse party one? god just picturing it... it feels like it was my own eye getting stabbed and I feel genuinely disturbed every time I have to see it. I can watch every other ending of corpse party without giving it much thought. But this demonstrates that Corpse party has a little something for everyone when it comes to its gore, every area is covered... 3) CBE 42: The CBE video by itself wouldn't really do much to make you understand why the game over scenes can be disturbing, but once you watch them you understand it. Some are generic, some are downright funny but the highlights truly bright on this one. I agree with git here the zombie one is the worst one, that single image is enough to make you understand that Waxworks is not F'n around anymore. A honorable mention and my personal 2nd worst game over screen has to go to the poison gas in the mine level. At first glance this doesn't look like much but once you fully understand what's going on, it ends up being way more painful and disturbing than what you originally thought. 4) CBE 36: Farewell my turnabout is still such a masterpiece of a case to this day, and the ending will result in either, one of the moet wholesome and happiest moments in the series...or one of the saddest and darkest moments in the series. The bad ending outcome is just so heartbreaking, Andrew going to jail... it's already sad seeing what happens during this case to her and this was just the nail in the coffin. But the worst part is that this ending means that Phoenix and Maya's friendship, one of the best friendships ever, is over, they'll never see each other ever again. Phoenix spirit is completely shattered after this and he has absolutely nothing going for anymore. The only one winning is, of course, Matt engarde. Just to add salt to the injury... 5) CBE 27: I don't really think I can add much here, git pretty much explained perfectly why this ending was disturbing and heartbreaking. Chuck greene was someone who always kept his cool attitude no matter what, nothing seemed to face him down nor demoralize him and would do anything in order to protect his daughter... but when that sole reason why you live for, that sole reason why you fight for, that sole reason why you keep going for... when that sole reason is gone... you end up like chuck greene in ending F... 6) CBE 43: Many of the endings are more interesting or downright hilarious than anything else, but the one that got me was Li long... man it's just sad, already seeing him struggle to even staying alive and the bad ending has him dying saying the name of his loved one with his final breath... and just the cherry on top, her loved one was still alive and pregnant... he won't even reunite with her in the afterlife and he won't get to ever see his son... every other ending in Soulblade doesn't even come close to this, it makes it even more unfair an makes me feel even more sad about poor li long, he didn't deserved such a harsh threatment... 7) CBE 65: Once again, I don't have much to add that hasn't been said in this video, I don't feel as disturbed and could watch this without any issue but it's something that left a remark more than others CBEs have. From 8 onwards (or downwards I guess) I don't really feel like any of them left any impact on me, it's more that this are the ones I either rewatch the most or remember the most for whatever reason, many other CBEs could come in and switch places without any problems. Not to say they're bad or anything, on the contrary, there's many good ones to the point where it's kinda hard picking one or ordering them all, hell maybe I'll change my mind about this top 10 in the future. I got carried away with this comment but I just wanted to join on this journey to remember the past and I'm more than ready to see what's coming up in the future, not only of this series but this entire channel, thank you whoisthisgit.

I never knew that there was a game with endings as horrifying as Corpse party. I watched this video in the middle of night and was so creeped out when I saw Yuka's ending in the video, I'm amazed I didn't get nightmares and PTSD after that. Barely managed to avoid that. I think Yuka's ending should be placed higher. It's that horrifying. Maybe that's why most horror movies don't have the little kids being killed... EDIT: Watching this ending again, can we just acknowledge how amazing Corpse party is at audible horror? Yuka's screams and those liquid sounds (presumably the sounds of her eye's blood) are by far the most horrifying and disturbing parts of the ending, I just can't sit even for a second without feeling terrified and disgusted when hearing those sounds

Munch's Oddysee has a very messed up ending, & probably messy as well. It didn't need to show Munch getting cut open alive, but they let you visualise it in your mind with those horrible sounds. Corpse Party & its many bad endings is horrifying. Not going to watch that again, it's so messed up! There's a creepy bad ending in Splatoon of all things! For a game about cute, colourful & adorable squid kid characters, Splatoon 2 brings us a grim bad ending in the Octo Expansion. Splatoon 3 also has a creepy bad ending in it. They both involve seeing the world destroyed by primordial ooze that coats the city/world & does horrifying things to the Inklings & Octolings. Also, the Splatoon series has plenty of Creepy Game Moments: In Splatoon, there's a messed up Easter Egg where after defeating a boss, you can hear what either sounds like tortured Inklings or Octolings. In Octo Expansion, we have the Octoling protagonist Agent 8 having to keep in line, because CQ Cumber blows him/her up with a bomb he strapped on his/her back if he/she fails a test & this is all just to complete tests successfully in a chance to be chosen to be blended up to make their body fluid into primordial ooze. Agent 3 (Inkling protagonist from the 1st game) getting mind controlled by those freaky glasses counts as a Creepy Game Moment, since the fluid in them going through his/her brain is blended up Octolings. 🤮 And all those Octarian enemies & bosses you fight in Octo Expansion? They're sanitised (had their memories permanently wiped & are now mindless zombies that are trigger happy & kill everything). Landing in the Fuzzy Ooze in Splatoon 3 is also pure Nightmare Fuel where you see your protagonist Agent 7 (either Inkling or Octoling) mutate into a mammalian fur covered monstrosity in the shape of an Inkling/Octoling. Remember, this is the same game with colourful & cute characters with adorable voices.

I definitely recommend it. You’ll learn about a lot of games with this series, and git’s narration style really adds to the endings and videos. This series even covers games that many can’t even play because of regional releases, like the video on Live a Live back before it was remade.

I haven't played any of the oddworld games, but the idea of abe getting killed off screen and having his head put up near where munch is getting his lungs extracted is horrifying. I tried my hardest not to run into the zombie game over in waxworks, but I ran into a picture of it while looking at a Wikipedia article of the game.

trivia: in ocarina of time, there's a dog in kakariko village called richard. you learn its name from its owner,a rotund woman in a house at night. when you're adult link, it comes to light that it's died at some point during the seven-year period that ellapsed, since the woman now refers to it in the past tense. i found it a bit unsettling when i first noticed that. i wonder if there are more nintendo games with details like this

Brr... each time a knife or squish sound appears in this video, I shudder. Darn it, imagination, how dare you try to put me in the place of the character suffering a terrible death! It really doesn't help I hate injuries or seeing any kind of blood outside of a body (except nosebleeds, weirdly). How did I muster through the Corpse Party and Zero Escape videos, you ask? You should try out the Quest for Glory, Laura Bow, and Kings Quest series. The 2nd and 4th Quest for Glory games had the most horrifying bad endings out of all of them but there are plenty of others to find in that series. They would make great additions to your list.

26:49 One of my favorite reads is Magus523's novelization of this game. It's every bit as heartbreaking. Strongly recommended. Games with alignment systems like SMT give us some pretty creepy bad endings. I remember Ogre Battle having a pretty disturbing one where your main character gets the same black armor as Gares Endora, the most vile recurring villain in the game. All your former friends and comrades curse your name and swear to bring down your reign of tyranny. That kind of thing always hurts. Especially if you know you'd probably win against them by 'virtue' of being the protagonist. Or rather, protagonist turned antagonist... 'Ya' evil bastard'.

Tactics Ogre also has some seriously depressing endings. Even if you do everything in your power to unite the kingdom, if you don't praise a hidden, very unforgiving secret chaos meter, you can quite literally get assassinated in the last scene or be hit with a scene just dooming everything you built to be destroyed by a mightier force from outside the mainland. It's not disturbing per se, but considering how well-written the game is and how long your journey to that point probably was, it's bound to be a huge downer

I was around 8 when i got the bad ending of munchs oddysee. I think i had at least 98 out of 100-something in total of rescues, i forget the total amount. But it was close enough, or so i thought. I had neutral quarma, not bad quarma. And yet the game considers it to be bad quarma regardless for some odd reason. I still got the bad ending, i practically shat myself. And i had remained terrified of the fuzzles for a quite a while.

Honestly you can do a list of ten creepy bad Corpse Party endings but one that got me was the alternate end where you let Yuka pee during the last chapter, more people die as a result including Yuka, Satoshi comes back to the world, only to be dragged back to Heavenly Host by his ghost sister (or so it seems) That got me because it seemed like it mixed many wrong ends together AND it didn't say "Wrong End" which to me hinted that it's a possible outcome!

There was this really bad DOS game I played called "Isle Of The Dead." Sure, the game played like rotten testicles, but some of the imagery and deaths were gory! One of thrm was an option to commit self-die via a shotgun, and they showed it to you, tears in the main character's eyes and all! I have a suggestion for episode 102: creepy bad endings... that aren't really endings For example, the Red Path in Omori, the Blixer to Annihilate transformation in just shapes and beats or the "cutscene" after The Glitch bossfight in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 And speaking of, it's actual ending can also be considered pretty creepy... Given how the BBEG straight up threatens YOU, the player before his death

Honestly the Wrong End screen is almost merciful in some of the Corpse Party endings. Like oh good, it’s over. I never saw Yuka’s bad ending when playing I don’t think, but man seeing that SotN looking building with the mildly gloomy fail music was such a breath of relief after all that torture.
