Bad Endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world/city/etc, something had to happen that, at best, creates a bitter sweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win after all your struggles. Sure, Game Overs CAN be scary too, but more often than not, all you'll get when you run out of lives is a simple "Game Over" message, possibly with the option to try again. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

The best ending actually has two versions, one with Lydie leaning on Juste if he finds all of his furniture. The implication is that they become a couple, which IMHO would make the best ending the canon one. Though if you start thinking about this - after Maria Renard who only follows Alucard if he uncovers enough of the map she's the second Castlevania chick with a very weird preference. Nothing hotter than cartographers and interior designers I guess.

Well, Juste got descendants and Lydie leans on him during the good ending, so.... And Maxim's sword appears again in Portrait of Ruin, if Castlevania had crumbled with him inside, I think it would've been lost forever.

Even though it's a fan game, the Mother: Cognitive Dissonance Paradox ending is kind of creepy I guess, you defeat the ones who once fought off the evil Giegue and in turn, you nullify the event ever happening and create a time Paradox that the heroes are stuck in forever with no hopes of ever getting out... I got reminded by the word "Dissonance" in this game's title

To be honest, the "Castle A" bad ending doesn't seem all that bad to me. Yeah, you're best buddy died, but you saved Lydie, the one you were trying to save and beat Dracula. It happens all the time as a plot device. Someone close to the protagonist dies for the greater good.

They've had the same lead charcter designer/artist for a while now (I'm sure you've seen the really detailed, hand-drawn full portraits that're in that one particular 'realistic' syle: I forget her name, but she's made them all). I read that she actually dislikes always making them pretty, and actually likes drawing the old men charcters much more.

Once thing that caught my attention in this game that i haven't seen talked about at all, is the small shiny spark thing that comes from Juste every time he gets hit. For some reason when i was a kid, i thought that was going to play into the plot, that the final boss could be absorbing the hp you're losing. That could actually be something really cool for a game, the more damage you take the more hp/power has the final boss.

hm...interessting. seems like all endings in castlevania have the same rythm to them. if you failed to get the true ending(fighting him in castle a): neutral ending. if you got the true ending,but failed to get it the good way(not equiping the important things): bad ending. if you got the true ending and got it right(equiping them): best ending

I guess if you want the true ending you also face higher stakes, i.e. potentially getting the bad ending, while the neutral ending is taking the safest option/route.

@ShadowBaofu Good point. This is the only Metroidvania game where the main character is a true Belmont, (Not counting Harmony of Despair) which also happens to be the easiest of the lot. Julius is certainly tough as well, seeing as he's in his fifties.

@TheValiantBob Not sure if it's true, but I think I remember hearing once that Alucard is actually Trevor Belmont's father, (which is ironic for the Belmont family) so maybe Juste looks like his distant relative more than the others, but I'm sure Castlevania Legends isn't considered canon anymore. The other reason is they tried to make this game more like SOTN than Circle of the Moon, and had the new hero resemble Alucard to reflect that.

I know that it has been 8 years, but yes, Castlevania Legends isn't cannon due to the confussion that makes with the time line (especially with Alucard being Trevor father). So that is why Legends isn't cannon. And Juste Belmont is similar to Alucard because Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance takes a strong base in Symphony of the Night, like the map and the similitudes with Symphony of the Night characters (Juste is similar to Alucard, but just being a Belmont. Maxim resembles to Richter and Lydie to Maria) and due to the combination of the Belmont and Belnades blood, that is why he have white skin and white hair, and he is the youngest belmont, because he has 16 during the events of the game.

Castlevania 2 has a waaaay more depressing possible ending (where simon dies and the ending is his grave), but also, for your next ending, i strongly suggest you check out any of the bad endings to 'i have no mouth and i must scream' - THAT gave me nightmares for weeks.

For anyone getting into this game .........after watching this 9 years later, dunno why you would Juste's backdash is Insanely Broken, and Maxim wields a Wakizashi that can multi hit and looks cool.

@@krimsonkatt No no! I totally agree with you there about SotN. It's quite slow and methodical, even if it was the first game in the series to introduce the stat modifiers and dual wield mechanics, which is a godsend... i think. For me, It's probably AoS -> Bloodstained RotN -> HoD -> Bloodstained CotM 2 -> PoR -> DoS -> SotN -> Bloodstained CotM -> LoI -> Bloodlines -> RoB -> OfE -> CotM -> CoD Anything older than that is the standard 'difficult to play' Castlevania... so i'll ignore those. My reasonings: (feel free to skip this long tandem) - Aria of Sorrow is the best in terms of story and gameplay, and even if it's fleshed out later on... It just never gets tiring, and the soundtrack is so cool. Plus, the Julius Mode kicks Ass! - Bloodstained Ritual of the Night is super streamlined, and a feast for eyes.. but also a little.... too overwhelming, because the scale of the game is getting too big for a 'Castlevania' type game... Regardless, it's Hella fun! - Harmony of Dissonance is like playing a modern day Belmont, (like Julius), except he moves like a butterfly and stings like a WASP! He's like a more polished Alucard... in my opinion, and Maxim's gameplay is amazing... if somewhat too broken - Bloodstained Circle of the Moon 2 is my favourite Bloodstained game, even if RotN is more enjoyable overall.... The cast is great and 'cutting the moon' just never stops being cool! Alongside the challenging gameplay that RotN loses to accompany, The 2D art is drop dead gorgeous! - Portrait of Ruin has the 2nd best memorable quote in the entire Franchise, except for the you know what one from Dracula...... "Jonathan!" "Charlotte!". The AI is NOT stupid, which is a big thanks, and The characters are lovely... if somewhat tragic. Although the Gameplay has a bit of a old timey control feel to it, it's never hampering, unlike.... say CotM. - The only reason why Dawn of Sorrow is higher on my list, despite the obviously baaaad and unnecessary touchscreen gimmicks.... Is that Soma reaches the full peak of his absolute badassery here! He was already a badass in AoS, but here... he just breaks all limiters... which kinda makes the game a little underwhelming to be honest. But it's so satisfying at the same time! And the higher framerate of the DS just makes it so much more cooler. Plus, the story does not completely make the earlier story progress completely redundant... unlike some OTHER games do! it's a nice sendoff for Soma and the cast in my opinion, and i will defend it completely! And the Julius mode is a feast this time as well, even if the soundtrack is not as Epic - Symphony of the Night has some pretty cool music, and Alucard is a lovable awkward guy... He can't talk normally, lol! The boss battles are some of my favourites in the series, with Death and the Doppleganger being the top two. But at the same time... it feels so... slow... and drags on for longer than needed. Getting around the map is slow and boring, which is the exact reason DoS rates higher than SotN in my list, because it fixes that, and THE. GOD. DAMN. CLOCKTOWER. It suffers from the zoomed in camera quite a few times, and the drab colour pallete makes things not much visually appealing, for the most part. I think it's fun, but a little too overrated, mostly due to nostalgia. - Bloodstained Circle of the Moon is like a spiritual successor to PoR, in my opinion. It knows what to do with the gameplay, and doesn't bother with the weaker points of the Castlevania series, like the equipment hassle. It's a more of an on the rails experience, but it's good fun still! - Lament of Innocence put off many from playing it, due to it's 3D nature.. but seriously! It's quite well made, and the game doesn't suffer from the transition of planes.... not immediately noticeable atleast. The story is really good, and it's an underrated game in the franchise. - Bloodlines is a much older game than the others on my list, but it honestly doesn't feel like that. Surprisingly, it is much older than CotM, but feels and plays better than that actually. And it is also surprisingly canon, which makes it all the better, because Elizabeth is one of the better Antagonists of the Franchise. - The only reason why Rondo of Blood, another of the older Castlevania is here on this list... is because the ending of RoB is the starting Prologue of SotN, which means that many have an idea what this game is about. And true to that knowledge, it is also a good game, even if it suffers from the chronical disease of 'stiff jumps' as all the older titles. Anyone who can stand the older somewhat difficult to control Castlevanias, should really try this one. - Order of Ecclesia.... good story... problematic execution in all aspects. The glyphs are a cool idea, but the Souls mechanics are much MUCH better thought out than these... As well as having unnecessary fanservice, which makes me annoyed, that they just HAD to sexualize the first and only canonical female protagonist then.... Not to mention that the Antagonist is a absolute bore.... - Circle of the Moon.... would have been good, if someone didn't have the foresight to REMOVE the stiff jump mechanic from the older games, as well as NOT make the game so visually dark. I had a hard time playing this, because not only is it hard to control the character... but damn near impossible to see enemies at times. And the 'Bro' character is not nearly bro enough... which undersells the plot point they use regarding him later on in the story... what a waste. - Curse of Darkness is supposed to be a 'mixed-positively recieved' game... but all i can say is that... it's shite! it doens't feel like Castlevania, it doesn't play like a Castlevania game... It feels like it was supposed to be a different game, but was later remade into one. There is fun to be found with this, but since i'm someone who wants to play a Hack and Slash game when i'm feeling like it, and not when i misled into it... I didn't like it all that much.... very dissapointing. The first Lords of Shadow was decent enough, in my opinion... but the cash-cow Konami just ruined it for me afterwards.... Amen, Castlevania.... We'll probably never see you in the flesh.... or boxset again....

I find that the chronologically first game, Lament of Innocence, to be much more tragic: You meet Dracula when he was still a human, and his motivations that set the whole series into motion, and you alo find out why the Vampire Killer whip was first made, and how it really works... Hint: it was reforged with a human soul.
