Creepy Bad Endings # 13

This is part 1 of the Breath Of Fire II Creepy Bad Endings episode. This part is about the game's creepy opening, but the rest of the game and its endings will be explained in # 14.
Bad Endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world/city/etc, something had to happen that, at best, creates a bitter sweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win after all your struggles. Sure, Game Overs CAN be scary too, but more often than not, all you'll get when you run out of lives is a simple "Game Over" message, possibly with the option to try again. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

I'm quite curious, what happens if you hack the game for those fights shown and defeated them instead of losing? Or would they just have infinite health and you will never be able to progress unless you lose?

You get EXP and the game continues like you lost the fight.

Years late to this party, but I remember playing an emulated version of this on our windows 98 a lonnnnng time ago. Interestingly enough the only cheat we had was infinite health. If you put it on for this fight before long Ryu's attacks do 0 damage no matter what, and the game is essentially soft locked. Guess 20 some years later it's good to know that you CAN kill it with extra cheats😂. EDIT: I wonder if with asteroid hitting the earth levels of RNG you can actually keep avoiding it's attacks several times in a row, and this is a way to stop from winning in that way? Just a theory. EDIT 2: This is only speaking for the first Gong Head battle. I believe you had to hard reset the game to activate/deactivate cheats on the emulator we used (using a save state would leave invincibility on), and since there isn't a save between the 1st and 2nd battle, I never tested it on Mr. Blueberry. I wonder if the same thing happens?

Seriously? I love BoF II and adore its tragic ending. I never choose the happy ending in any playthrough because it feels less epic. Gotta have the feels! ; ) Man, FF IV ruined so many good sacrifices due to the last minute change of heart and wishing a happily ever after for all but Tellah.

I gotta admit, as an 11 year old, that opening was unlike anything i had seen before. No wonder i also was hooked onto this game from the very beginning. but oh god! the Soundtrack. it's not just sad, but sooo memorable!

one thing i don't understand is the translation,why do people seem to rate an awesome game like this one so badly for a "bad translation",the story is good,i do like the characters ('cept for "the plant man"),the soundtrack is perfect,and the battles do get annoying,but hey,all final fantasy games are like this too in my opinion (actually,all RPG's with random encounters)

Lufia II Rise of the Sinistrels, if you play the first game you know what's coming, but after getting to know and love the central family, it too has a heart wrenching ending, and it was the only one (therefore making it the good and the bad ending) for about 20 years until the remake on the DS came out, and the Happy ending in that version isn't cannon.

A name I have used for every online game I have ever played comes directly from this game. This game is very special to me, and left a mark upon me unlike any other game before. It had dragons, and swords, and the shamans, and grass people... I actually played BoF2 before 1, and then ended up buying 1 anyway. It's still one of my most favorite games of all time. I can't help but shed tears during the Bush Lands Music, especially after knowing the true story of the Dragon...

...They head back before you, as you can see in the video. Even just the wait of being asked whether to sleep or not takes time - I'd equal it to about 10 or so minutes, even longer. You're asked if you want to sleep, you say no, you make your way back. They'd already headed back, and were ambushed on the way. You have to remember, it's a SNES game, they couldn't make too much in the way of story divergences because of your actions because they were dealing with limited cartridge space.

have you ever played mother 3? it has the same gripping storyline as breath of fire two, but its gameplay is SOOOO Much better, and its ending is so sad and ambiguous, so it would fit a lot with this series, maybe it would fit as a good sequel to your creepy good endings. i would highly advise that you check it out, its one of the very few rpgs i actually like.

You should take a look to NDS game called Nine hours, Nine persons, Nine doors. It's really good and has six endings, three are just annoying, you don't understand what happened at all. The fourth one is an open ending? But the fifth and sixth (They appear together) are really something worthy.

BoF2 is infinitely better if you grab Ryuusei's translation for it: www.romhacking.net/translations/1384/ . But it's worth noting that sad and depressing results are pretty much par for the course in the Breath Of Fire series. Pretty much every game has multiple endings, and generally even the best ending isn't 100% happy.

It doesn't matter. The dream is just that, a dream. If you don't sleep, the memories of the villagers are still gone - you find out later who it was done by and get to whip it's arse, but by then it's far too late and they never regain their memories of you and your family. Also, the text that was skipped through after the Barubary fight is important even if it isn't easily understood. It basically says that Ryu is the 'chosen one' of the demons... but you'll have to play to learn more~

BoF II had such an amazing plot, the ending was indeed lacking, the prequel at least let u know that everyone return to their places happy thats why i love FFV endiing, it actually tell u all that happen to the main characters after the final battle

i got this game for the wii, and played it all the way, i definetly reccomend this game 100%, the story is awsome, the ending is sad, and the gameplay, despite the translations, is like final fantasy, well almost.

I could never get myself to finish this game, I always got bored and started playing something else =P mostly because when I was in the map walking to a town while fighting monster the game freezed, not everytime, but frecuently (I use ZSNES). Also, I think the fights are pretty boring, but it has awesome music, I have to admit that. The story... I thought it could get interesting later, but at the start it was SO strange (like the disappearance of his family, or what you said at 8:13)
