Bad endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world, something happens that, at best, creates a bittersweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win, despite everything that happened throughout your adventure. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

From what I remember of Conker's Bad Fur Day, there was a recurring theme where one's greed ends up screwing them over in the end. From Wasps stealing a Hive, to the Catfish trying to get their 'treasured' stack of 1 Dollar bills, to a Vampire drinking too much blood and various other examples, that seems to the be the one consistent point in the game's narrative, even though the plot itself isn't really all that solid.

Yeah, the robotic voice snarks at you a lot during the fight! If you keep taking hits without guarding, it'll ask if you know how to block (it'll eventually reveal that "IT'S THE Z BUTTON, YOU FOOL!). Additionally, if you keep missing the airlock, it can say "NO! NOT THE WALL! IT'S THE LARGE EXIT THING THAT YOU HAVE TO BE AIMING FOR! IDIOT!". ^-^

This is how your own hubris can sometimes bite you in the nether regions. Conker only used the game glitching out as an opportunity to make himself look cool instead of trying to save the only person he cares about. It’s only *after* he committed his scene that he realized he screwed up. He had *one shot* to rewrite the world in his favor and he messed it all up!

The game over screen before the cutscene where the professor works out his solution Is a rather nice attention to detail considering they didn't even think of the idea of using a red squirrel yet. Edit: the panther king seems to be oddly grateful given that depending on what happens, the squirrel he was given was a bag of meat, drowned corpse or burnt dinner.

It's still crazy that a game like this only had three voice actors. One that did all the male voices, one that did all the female voices, and one that did The Great Mighty Poo's voice.

Let me just point something out. This is one of the few N64 games that has full voice acting. Let me also reiterate that voice acting takes up a lot of space, and is usually only feasable for disc-based games (and even so, over on the PS1 it wasn't even ubiquitous) -- the N64 is a cartridge medium that not only can't do 'multiple discs' that many contemporaries do to accomplish content-heavy games, but each cartridge has a fraction of the storage space of a CD-ROM. Voice acting has to be heavily compressed to make it fit in those cartridges, and it's honestly a miracle whenever a game came out with such voice acting. It was quite rare; most games usually only had voice acting for generic shouts, quips, and the like, such as Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. Star Fox 64 was the first N64 game with full voice acting, and also a shout out for a similar accomplishment: Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, which instead opted for an actual orchestral, recorded soundtrack. HEAVILY compressed, but N64 developers really seemed to have something to prove whenever they worked with the system. People really pushed the hardware to its limits, and took heavy advantage of its specific strengths. Anyway, CBFD's voice acting, though you can certainly hear how muffled it is from the compression, is still quite higher quality than you'd expect considering the cartridge medium's limitations. The N64 was hard to program for as well, from what I understand. Perhaps adversity begets perseverence in that regard.

Zeo Spark actually the male voice actor, Chris Seavor, and the games director did more female voices then the main female voice actor. Chris seavor pretty much did 90% of the whole thing.

Since this game is all about corrupting the usual platformer goody-two-shoes formula, I suspect that’s why we got such a dark ending too. What would normally be a well-earned good ending becomes one accomplished by cheating, with Conker so wrapped up in the power trip that he forgets his love interest until it’s too late, and can’t enjoy his victory because of it. A dark ending, but a very fitting one.

Honestly, the original ending is kind of the saddest ending. I wouldn’t want to be a table leg, but being the king of a land full of idiots has to be the worst, especially when your wife died, and you forget to bring her back to life with cheat codes. He has to lament over his wasted opportunity and it’s pretty bitter. I’d say it suffices as a creepy deep ending.

Do you know what else is sadly gone forever? Conker 64. Conker 64 was the prototype of Conker's Bad Fur Day, before they made it "not a kid's game". There's footage of it, because someone had the cartridge with it on, but then Rare confiscated it, ripped the rom onto their private archive, & erased the cartridge. The tonal whiplash of this ending really left an impression on me first time around. Originally, the post-credits scene was going to imply that Conker commits suicide, but it was changed to this to tease a potential sequel which Microsoft decided that they shouldn't make and that they should make a remake of this game instead for the Xbox. Now, I don't mind the remake, in fact I think it's superior in most aspects, but I would have much preferred that sequel.

Like most Rare games, this had a really good soundtrack. Robin Beanland never does anything half-assed, even in a game with no script. The soundtrack still managed to really sell the atmosphere of the moments, as disconnected as they are. And though it may be highly disconnected, there's a lot of well used storytelling devices, tricks, and tropes used through the story. The game is extremely immature, but it's interesting how in depth analysis can reveal a lot of very interesting things and messages, and attention to detail. It's like... "I don't know what the hell this game is supposed to be, but we'll be damned if we're not going to make it the best... whatever the hell it is."

I must disagree about it being effective. I firmly believe that if an ending is a punch to the gut that you don't' know how to react to it is a failure as an ending. I firmly believe that the important part is to be _satisfying,_ not memorable.

My only thought that crossed my mind when I reached the end of Conker: Was that it? I remember this game being a letdown for me. It was the first Rare game I had played all the way through and I don't remember having a lot of fun on it. And the end was practically the game all of a sudden remembering that there was a story. Gonna be the one to post this before someone else does. There is some more story that is explained in Conker's Live and Reloaded Multiplayer, but mainly pertains to what happened with the squirrel army and the main antagonists sadly. I have many questions about this games ending to this day, it always puzzles me. How did Conker know about there being a throne room, let alone putting some random throne room being a top priority over Berri's death? Heck, even odder. Why start time when he could have just finished it right there and then started time? On top of that, what did Conker do with the 1 million dollars? Before I also forget too, what did he do with the shotgun as well? Such a strange ending rather than a creepy one to me. I can see the game overs, but this game seriously needs a better explanation as to why, and only the writers have an answer for. This is what I sort of believe as to why it's a straight-up game over at the end where there isn't any special ending compared to dying anytime during the entire game, and it is because I feel this was intended and that Conker actually was to die here until well... The game fake crashed. No matter how much you kept on trying to push him out, he would jump back in over and over again like it didn't matter if he was defining an airlock gravity push. So to sum it up. The game did not crash, and that Conker actually died, but his spirit lead him astray that he did not die and that is when the game locked up. Or I guess another theory to this is that he was so drunk during the entire time of this game. None of this actually had happened but he was just telling you a story one after another before the army left, and when he mentions greener than grass until it's gone. It made me think that Berri might have not died but dumped him, and possibly the reason he had gotten the crown was from being considered the drunk king at the bar as the next time you see him. He doesn't have anything in the next game and isn't on the throne anymore but living with his scarecrow friend. It's a little bit better light than what the full intentions were to be and why the ending was just so... Weird.

I honestly love the ending to this game. It might feel out of nowhere, but that's, because the dev team came up with the beginning and the end before even working out what was inbetween. It created a strange feeling- No, reality where nothing really mattered inbetween and the grim reality is that it was all to lead up to the resolve in which realistically had no place in existing other than the petty actions of a few characters. The point I'm trying to get at is that CBFD manages to somehow illustrate (at least to me) how everything can be taken away or simply put be rendered meaningless for no significant reason or cause at all, just leaving the sensitive contextualities in limbo. Conker is and always will be the only one to know what was really lost and it was originally intended for him to stop it right there and then, but they didn't, because the sequels that never came into existence simply had to be made or something, so Conker's blessed with never having some strange peace of mind. Simply put he's not a character made to move on. It strangely connected with me in a way I didn't expect. After all, we all have things in our life we simply can't help and doing nothing can some times be the only thing capable of keeping such things from getting out of balance. We share Conker's fate as much as he does his own in a strange way. PS: I apologize to anybody who melted their mind reading this, I simply struggled to explain such a concept very well... I mean it is a feat and a half to make it this far so kudos to you!

I think I still have my copy of this game on the N64 somewhere. I found the repeatable 10up Tail in the Barn Boys level, so I never was short on extra lives. I never actually saw any of those Game Over screens even though I died a lot doing the Bomb Run and the War level.

I'm not a fan of M-rated games, actually I have never even planned to play any M-rated game. But I know a little bit about this game, mostly the Great Mighty Poo lol and because of Pewdiepie, I had decided to play it. (Yeah...through emulator...man this is embarrasing :P) At first I was only planned to play to the Great Poo part and delete it since the rom size is very big. However, I started to like it and decided to play the whole game. It was just months ago. Like I said, I know only a little about this game. From what I have watched, I think it's just a game full with blood, dark comedy, those adult contents. But after I played it myself, I have to say that it's one of my favorites games I have ever played. I don't know how to put, all I know is that after I completed it I felt a bit depress and despair for few days. One of my memorable moments is probably the war part. I know it's funny to think that teddy bears can become serial killers, but the entire part, the places, the music, I can feel pain and loss as if it's the real war. ....I'm not very good at express words, but all I can say is that, this has to be one of the most creative ways to make a video game; from cartoonish-styled characters to the badass killers, and from those dark comedy to be one of the darkest story I have ever experienced in gaming.
