My Grandmother had a woven copper dress. Yes, the whole dress, 20's style short dress made of fine copper thread. It looked so unique, and part of the strap was oxidized to green. I don't know what happened to that dress, but it was the most unique thing I have ever seen.

Probably too late for this now, but I'd recommend putting a sheer/nude fabric sort of slip on beneath the dress whenever you wear it, to help your skin not smell like pennies but also to reduce redness from the metal touching your skin. Gotta say I do love the variation of color given by the pennies though, shiny versus the mucky and everything in between. Very cool to look at. You honestly could just display it on a mannequin at a museum if you didn't want to wear it again, I'm sure someone would display it!

My mom’s been collecting coins in a big cylinder-shaped can for 13 years. Any coin she finds is put in the can. She says she’s saving up for something. She won’t tell me what it is she’s saving for, but it must be something big. That big can is heavier than me, nobody can lift it. It’s been in a corner, beside our living room couch for ages. Nobody dares to even try counting all of it, but I’m guessing it’s probably worth a lot.

Well, scalemail, but a lot of the same principles apply, having a corset styled back would also help transfer half the weight to the waist, as well as making it easier to adjust the hips to the point that it could much easier be donned or doffed, the next step would be making it practical to sit in, with chain mail this is easy, but scalemail would probably need some adjustments in how the scales are arranged or something.

If I remember correctly, scale mail was often made with a leather backing so it didn't pinch as much. That is if a warrior didn't already wear a layer of padding anyway. Adding a thin layer of leather or cloth would probably make the dress a little more comfortable and less cold when put on.
@GrndAdmiralThrawn
@GrndAdmiralThrawn 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Scale mail was usually sewn directly into a liner of some sort (either leather or cloth) in order to reinforce the armor and give more surface area for the scales to rest against the body. Oddly enough, since none of these would have been worn directly on the skin anyway, she actually accidentally hit on a different type of scale armor at the very beginning called lamellar armor, in which the scales are sewn together horizontally instead of overlapping. This gave more flexibility and less weight at the cost of more solid protection.

@@scappley1735 yeah, this is one of the reasons why actual mail is worn with an undershirt-- a padded undershirt, so you don't just bruise straight through it when someone tries to stab you, but that's not exactly a going concern with a scale dress. maybe padded shoulders tho, to disperse the weight there some? else you'd end up with bruised shoulders after a few hours.

(Edit: I do think it is lovely) Also wider straps on the shoulders for weight distribution would have also helped. If your smaller chested, you probably have never noticed this problem, but it is a bra problem for larger chested women. Weight distribution, it is a thing. OH, and corsets also were for this reason as well as shapewear. All those crinolines, hoops skirts, petticoats, and over skirts weighed a lot also. Distributing the weight over the entire torso and hips made it easier to wear.
@martinhg98

@midnightqueen3332
@midnightqueen3332 2 жыл бұрын
@@martinhg98 making the waist tighter wouldnt be that possible with a dress in this style without some significant alterations. She had to slide in from the bottom of the dress, meaning it has to be able to go over the widest part of the body the hips or the shoulders(depending on your frame). Shrinking the waist means adding a Hook/Eye or belt system to the dress to accommodate a smaller waist. The way I would solve it is mostly by Corset and having several Hook/eye clasps on the Corset and dress for it to hang off of, distributing the weight across the body and hips.

As someone who makes maille, I am impressed with how quickly you got your dress done! A full suit of armor often takes 50-60 hours to make using either steel or aluminum rings. Someone who was experienced in chain maille could probably make something similar to your dress using only metal, but it would take a good 30-40 hours. If you ever do something similar in the future (I know, it's a crazy amount of work) I recommend using a belt to take the weight of your shoulders, or to wear padding underneath the shoulder pieces. Your work is beautiful, thank you for sharing.

@@countrysidecoffins2925 if you absolutely had to for whatever reason thorough hand-washing prior to contact as well as an alcohol based hand sanitiser (or just rubbing alcohol) will strip away the oils (by washing) and temporarily halt oil production (the alcohol) for about 10 min I can't imagine a situation where you were forced to use change but if somehow one arises doing this should prevent the smell from forming. A few atoms of the metal will end up left on your hands though so unless washed afterwards a faint amount of the smell might form once your body oil is allowed to return, but that would likely be unnoticeable

it would be lighter weight than metal, that's for sure- but i think most kinds of shell wouldn't be durable enough to make a whole garment out of- they'd prolly chip too easily. might be better to stick with metal, but find some sort of coating for the metal to make it look pearly

@@xxselenaxx2142 think your idea is closest, and if you get the right kind you can even shape it into a shell shape, like perhaps a warbla(sp?), possibly those flexible plastic cutting mats you see at like Walmart...but my thought is if your going to use a plastic your going to need some kind of underdress for separation of plastic and body otherwise sweat is going to be running down the dress/shirt/skirt. This could be as a lining, or a separate shift, cami shirt/dress...

@@LizzieLizzieLizzieLizzie It's roughly 1/5 extra in width, not even taking into consideration the length of the dress and the cup size which probably needs to be increased as well. As seen in the video, the weight is already a lot for those straps, I don't think adding even a relatively small amount of weight would increase the comfort level. Maybe with a redesign it could work? I've seen people in the comments suggesting a belt so the bulk of the weight rests on the hip instead of the shoulder.

Fun fact: Coins actually don’t smell because they’re dirty. That metallic “coin” smell you identify actually happens as a result of the metal reacting with the chemicals in the sweat glands of your skin. This means, at the end when go said you smelled like pennies and needed to shower, you actually weren’t dirty at all (remember, you cleaned them all before using them) you were actually just smelling your own body on a chemical level.
