Something I'd want to check once this girdle / windage tray is used long term:: Is the tray crushing out under the main bearing washers after XX hours of use? If the main caps move around at all, there will be fretting of the tray, in the long term this will lead to the main studs losing tension and nuts backing off. Given race engines have short hours of use between rebuilds, this might not be a problem as the tray would only fret slightly.

The Mustangs motor is second hand, and I believe it slipped a bearing, although I'm not 100% on that
@bobroberts23715 жыл бұрын
A crank main or rod bearing insert spinning in it's bore is the result of the crank touching the bearing. This can be caused by lack of oil / oil getting pushed out due to high load, dirt , connecting rod stretching then clearance at the parting line getting too tight. Bearing crush is what holds the bearing from spinning in operation not the tabs, the tabs are there just to locate the bearing during assembly.

@helplmchoking5 жыл бұрын
Digital torque wrenches are fine if they're really high quality and you can trust them. But totally agree on the hands on approach. You need to be feeling and noticing every part, you never know when there's a little scratch or filing or whatever that you might not see
@helplmchoking5 жыл бұрын
@ChrisHallett83 yeah a lot of people think using a torque wrench makes your work precise by default, but your work can only be as accurate as the tools you use. This is always important but especially so when your pushing this kind of power out of an engine
@bobroberts23715 жыл бұрын
An Old School " torque wrench is a bending beam. I'm betting many complained about those new fangled clickers when they came out. A high quality digital is just fine. And while we are on the subject, when using a clicker one click is just fine. Going for a second click does nothing other than wear out the torque wrench as starting friction is higher than running friction. A slightly undertorqued fastener will still " click " at the intended torque.

My Snap-On torque wrench zero’s its load cell every time you hit the power button. I traded in an old Cornwell digital torque wrench a while ago (hated the user interface) and asked the dealer if he wanted to check it before I traded it in. He said, “no, I rarely see a digital torque wrench go out of calibration”. Granted, I’m sure he’s talking about quality digital torque wrenches, not ones from a bargain basement hardware store.

How much does it cost to build an engine like this? With all the aftermarket parts
@NZMOPAR5 жыл бұрын
Lots
@802Garage5 жыл бұрын
You could price out all the bits pretty easy. Machine shop work you can get an average. Getting the special machining done for the engine O-rings is probably a bit. My guess would be something like $1500 for machine work, $2000 for the cams, $500 for other valve train parts, $1500 for pistons, $800 for rods, another $200 or so in race bearings, $150 head gasket and O-rings. Might add a bit if you did anything to the crank of course. So that's like... $6650? Though, I'm sure it could be done for less with certain deals and discounts and such. That's for the basic long block though not including the damper or cam gears which get pricey fast, and lots of other little bits like oil seals. Then of course paying the engine builder, but that's sort of different. Likely a couple grand in that at least. In the end actually ready to go in the car it's likely a $10,000 engine, not including turbo of course, but I could be way off one way or the other. :)
@802Garage5 жыл бұрын
Oh, and apparently they used a new block and heads supplied by Ford, plus an aftermarket windage tray. I also forgot head studs which are likely several hundred bucks and connecting rod studs which may or may not come with the rods. Aftermarket sump and pickup can add money too. Basically starting from scratch and going all aftermarket it of course gets pricey very fast.

@@AttilaThebung The Cresta is certainly more consistent down the quarter, but I think Benny is gonna have to turn the wick up to beat Leroy. I suspect the curb weight is a big factor, given the Mustang went quite a bit faster on Drag Week (as I recall they were both constrained by head bolts, etc).
@nathan24835 жыл бұрын
