Coleman Young had the original plaque removed before he left office in January 1994. Her grandson David Dodge submitted a much better design but the city denied it. This fountain is what rejuvenated the area and afterwards plans for the Renaissance Center came to fruition.

reminds me of when when some important chinese official visited san francisco, and overnight the city figured out how to clean up everything and remove the homeless.

I don't live there but I would guess there's been desire to fix it for years now and the draft gives them the opportunity to be able to spend money on it

If the draft wasn’t in Detroit this wouldn’t of been done for years

Yes, I agree. Having the city play host to events with a national drawing is critical for having a strong positive economic impact on the region. This is a great investment both short and long term for the tax paying citizens as well as the out of town tourists.
@carstarsarstenstesenn9 ай бұрын
Maybe, but the draft wouldn't have come to Detroit if people hadn't been working to improve it. Events like a draft give the city the opportunity and money to fix things like this, but there has to be will and effort to change in the first place

An urban legend I heard about the fountain long ago is that the programming that controlled the fountain spray patterns was all stored in the original computer. No backup. And then someone lost the password…😂. I wonder if that is true.

When did Anna Thompson Dodge donate the 2 Mil? She passed away in 1970?? I've got 2 pieces of Stone Work from the taredown of The Mansion Rose Terrace in my yard.

It was written in her will around 1965. Mayor Jerome Cavanaugh and a Detroit Free Press writer contacted her and asked of she could leave a bequest to build a memorial in honor of her late husband. She agreed but added her son to it as well and it is known as the Horace E. Dodge & Son Memorial.

I'm sure it was in her will. Typically bequests take time to come to fruition.
