I spent a couple years restoring a 95 CR250 before I rode it. Once I finally got it done, riding it was work on the trails I have. I realized I was having more fun tooling around on my wifes little crf100. I finally got my 250F this weekend and what a fun bike! Its not begging me to eat the whole time like my CR, it just does whatever you want to do. :)

300l or 250f with a street legal kit? For a guy who’s looking to ride 30 minutes on country roads to the closest trail system. Furthest would be 1.5 hours on road

Tough call. If you are only gonna go like 60km/hr tops, then a 250F. But if you want a true dual sport, the 300L is much better on the road. More than the 250F is better in the dirt.

That engine is sounding pretty happy piston wise. I'd say he needs to look at his cam chain tensioner.
