There have been numerous tests that show paper filters do a better job of filtering out fine dust than oiled foam style filters which is one of the reasons more of the OEM's are moving in that direction. On competition dirt bikes with much more frequent service intervals (top end rebuilds, valve checks, etc) this isn't a big deal,
@troyjollimore41002 жыл бұрын
Not exactly rocket science. Of course they do a better job of filtering... because paper filters are more restrictive. Oiled filters are trying to get near that filtering level, while drastically increasing airflow...
@Jarvis602 жыл бұрын
@@troyjollimore4100 not sure I completely agree with that. Filter performance also has to do with the surface area of the filter media. You can cram a lot more surface area in a pleated filter than you can with a standard foam filter. This is a benefit when the filter begins to load up. The smaller the surface area the more the pressure drop increases meaning less flow. To some degree filter design is Rocket Science. In the video below the Unifilter product loaded up and failed much quick than some of the other styles. I do run a pleated Guglitec filter on my 690 instead of paper. Not so much for performance but rather that I can field clean it if I need too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJi9gZ6dnLCBn6s
@troyjollimore41002 жыл бұрын
@@Jarvis60 You're still stuck on the filtering aspect. This is where the oiled filters depend on the oil to catch and hold small particulates as they bounce off the oil-covered strands. Filter design IS rocket science, but it's also a big ol' vacuum sucking air through a straw. You want the balance of good pressure with good flow. Notice the oiled filters all say they will probably require more engine maintenance since they can't filter as well as pleated paper.
@Jarvis602 жыл бұрын
@@troyjollimore4100 I think we are saying the same thing. The oiled foam filter in that test loaded up quickly and became more restrictive than the paper counter parts with the same amount of contaminants. Hence, to maintain performance you would need to clean that filter more often along with increased engine maintenance. Since I don’t race I am more concerned how well a filter keeps dirt out of the engine than trying to squeeze out an extra hp. But I do like my Guglatech filter since when you use the oil with the pleated membrane it filter just about as well as a paper filter plus if you should play submarine commander you can pretty much pull it and clean it out.

those "high flow" type filters like k&n suck, best engine killers you can buy. AND the stock filter works very very well. They are engineered to provide all the air the stock engine could want when 50% plugged. Probably more than enough for mild "back yard" modifications when 40% plugged too. NEVER use this type filter on a non-race motor that will not be rebuilt every few hundred miles.

Did my first top end rebuild when I was 14, and I'm 26 now whether you are racing them or if it's an everyday rider I've experienced no more wear running a well oiled more breathable filter than a paper filter. "Engineered to provide all the air a stock engine could want when 50% plugged" Absolutely not. Out of the box they are very restrictive. A bone stock engine maybe but stock engines are anemic to pass emissions laws not many people stick with the stock fuel map or stock jetting on a new bike none I know at least no point in paying full price for a larger heavier engine that is choked out and starved for fuel making the same power as a cheaper smaller lighter one that is tuned properly. Does the bigger opening really make a difference when on the other side of the filter is the same small opening on the intake boot?
@ronald86732 жыл бұрын
Yes, it does. As the engine sucks air through the FI inlet tube The amount of air available to be filtered is increased. To test this out, put a straw into a small cup that has had the top sealed off except for the straw. Suck in. Now use the same straw and put it in the end of a large soda bottle and seal it off and suck in with the same force as was used with the small cup. Notice a difference ? This was a problem 50 years ago when factory MX race bike builders/designers started using still air boxes. They did not allow for volume inefficiencies and designed their inlet openings too small.
@BrianDoherty-e8s6 ай бұрын
The bigger opening actually reduces air to the engine because this backyard hack destroyed intake resonance those pesky Honda engineers designed into it. Just one look and Jethro knew those dang fool Japanese automotive engineers had screwed up the air intake design!

I dont understand the claim 200% more air. Dna says the filter increases flow by only 10% over the stock filter. So basically, you wont get anything extra than 10% increase in flow. It doesnt matter if you increase the air around it by 500%, it will only increae flow by 10%. Since 10% increase in flow efficiency is not that much, why do you think the snorkel size needs to be increased so much. Perhaps at it is, it already provides that 10% of air increase that it needs around it.
@jonathaneasen9630 Жыл бұрын
You will only reach the maximum flow of the DNA or any other filter if the flow to it is unrestricted… if the inlet to the air box is small this creates a restriction and flow inefficiencies due to turbulence. The larger snorkel is less restrictive and significantly reduces turbulence in the airflow allowing air to reach the filter more freely. Whether it needs to be as large as 3” I’m not sure… but it would be possible to optimise this using Bernoulli’s principle of flow if you wanted… or you just fit the largest inlet in the space available 😉
@trailrider1980 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathaneasen9630 that i understand but the dna filter only increases 10% so it won't do more than that. Not sure if is worth the hassle. Just doing the snorkel mode makes more sense and not buying the filter (only 10% benefit). For mt07, the dna filter adds nothing performance wise eventhough the filter efficiency is increased 30% with it but doing the snorkel mod has been shown to be be beneficial by most tuners.

Also do not delete the filter and put a sock over the intake boot - the intake boot is exposed to way way more 'dirty' air and has a far smaller orifice.
