Two things. One you can always use my clips for reference. I don't care and I'm pretty sure that would be "fair use" any ways. If it's to make a video on something like this then go for it. Second I like what you've done here more then my own mod. Very smart and should do the same thing. I have had my air box back out since this mod and after some heat cycles it sits almost at the right angle now. But this way is easier and avoids having to flex it a bit. Great job!

Damn.. Jake hanging in my comments. Thought I would never see the day 😂 Glad you saw my intention when doing any comparisons. Definitely was not my intention to "bash" the way even 550 performance was originally suggesting to do this mod. You are much more crafty than many others and I suspect the mod can easily be done worse than you did and then it could be a problem for someone 😁 I noticed rescently that Maveric from 550 has added a new part to their CRF300 catalogue. It's a completely new velocity stack pipe made to fit the original box opening. In pictures it looks 3D printed but I suspect it still is rubber of some kind. Thanks for the comment Jake 😁 Big fan!

I have done everything you have minus the velocity stack. Plus I swapped the 40T rear sprocket to a 42T to get that low end punch your missing. With all the other mods, the bike doesn’t lose any top end speed by adding just 2 more teeth. But now I can get the front tire off the ground without having to grab a handful of clutch. My bike topped out at 81mph in stock form, and it still tops out at 81mph.

I wonder if this effects the reliability and fuel economy much? This seems to be the best dual sport bike with this mod that doesn't have performance level service intervals. Very tempting
@PatchedBandit9 ай бұрын
I don't see how it would negatively affect reliability. One could even argue that the engine tune is now correct and therefore is better for long term reliability. Stock engines with the "euro" and other restrictions tend to run pretty lean. This ECU tune is optimizing the engine to run with the correct mixture. I have a chapter in the description about the fuel consumption from my first longer ride.

I would be curious how it would run with the stock exhaust. I look forward to your next video.
@PatchedBandit9 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure the stock exhaust is a major restriction and 550 performance states that the exhaust swap is the only necessary for this level 1.0 mod. The bike is according to them going to run better with this tune if you do all the same mods as me. I would recommend looking into Yoshimura RS-4 as it would most likely sound much less nasty. I just didn't want to pay the money now.. but I might do that later.

Great work and interesting solutions. The only incorrect measurement you made is the stock velocity stack is larger than the cbr stack. You’re comparing a previously installed stack that’s been stretched out against a never installed stack. Once the cbr stack is stretched over the throttle body, they will measure the same. I used the cbr part and clocked it to match the stock angle so installation will be as easy as stock. My mods will add so much performance that I won’t miss the intake expansion chamber. I did cut off the stock stack in the same place you did but used the cut off velocity piece to double the intake capacity without compromising my waterproofing. I just drilled a parallel hole next to the snorkel and rtv’d the velocity tube in place. With the 550 performance ECU Stage 3.0 reflash, cbr cams and 301cc big bore kit, the power boost should be more satisfying. Being more than 100 lbs. heavier with half the power of my KTM 500, I will also go to a lithium battery to cut weight. It will never match my KTM in performance, but the Honda reliability will make it my daily driver.

That is the smart thing to do with the CRF. The weakest part of this bike is the suspension. Front and rear. I made the mistake of going with the YSS suspension which doesn’t work well with this bike at all. Especially the fork kit . Lesson learned. I am going to go with the Rally Raid next month. The design of the motor really doesn’t lend in self to any large gains in HP.

@@user-se7vt5ow4e Very happy with the RR set up and also have the Hydraulic preload adjuster. As for engine mods, these have bee tuned for ages in the cbr300. Anyway, it about improving drivablity. Honda did all of this under-sizing of intake air strictly to meet emission requirements, I know you're doing this one correctly since I've seen it done. I will say that you're cleaner than the other guy but both of you got the job done. If you were to do the 301cc kit I think you'd have to do this intake job but how would the ECU numbers work? I mean, after the big bore the fuel numbers would need to be changed along w/ the air..... but I'm guessing you would not use/need the 550 ECU flash in this case? IDKnow but it just hit me that there's several different things that might offer you an ECU change in numbers & you can't use all of them. Depending on what you do with the bike it is or isn't. It's a lot of money to put into a CRF but then again you are getting Honda reliability, service intervals and traveling comfort with the CRF. I admit I ride a bit hard at times and I do at least half the service interval in the manual but still the KTM 350 can't do 5000km with one set of engine oils and I'm pretty sure I don't need a full engine rebuild at 100 hours. Let's put it this way: I might buy the KTM 350 but I would still not sell the CRF. I would keep both.

Good video! I have my doubts with the modified nozzle. The CBR one would always be flush with the air box but yours would produce more turbulence when inserted into it, right? It would be a mix between images 1 and 4 of the image provided by 550 (10:17)
@PatchedBandit9 ай бұрын
Even the cb300 part is not flush with the box. Some turbulence inside the box is always to be expected but that would the same with the stock nossle. The long snout is even further from the throttle body and works fine. This mod is nicer than cb300 since it turns parallel wit the airbox as the airbox also turns down at the beginning.

The length of intake tube matters. My car has electrically adjusted telescopic intake tubes that extend longer in low RPM for better torque and retract shorter for high RPM power. Cutting it short is not without side effect. I'm still searching for lightweight aftermarket exhaust that is not louder than stock exhaust. Riding offroad is illegal essentially everywhere in my country so we need to keep as silent as possible to avoid trouble. I wonder if you are going to replace heavy Pb battery with LiFePo and to remove pointless ABS to reduce weight?
@PatchedBandit9 ай бұрын
True that there is always side affects on modifying the airboxes but this ECU tune is optimized for the CB300 stack and HF lid so I tend to lean that this is a benefit considering high rpm power production. If I want a fully euro stamped exhaust at some point I'm probably going with Arrow. They even have a midpipe with approved CAT. This dominator is probably one of the louder ones available but also one of the cheaper ones too. I already swapped the battery here: kzbin.infoHSNgOZXblik?feature=share I might do the collector box delete later but I'm probably gonna leave the ABS as it's not such a big benefit to remove.

@PatchedBandit4 ай бұрын
If you don't want to do a lot of modifications with that ratio I would go for the Rally. You can make the L work with a rally tower, bigger tank etc.. but it requires some more work. Rally is more out the box ready to do some serious mileage. But if you can save some money and can work a bit on the bike the L is a very good option. Just get a rally tower and Acerbis tank and you will have a more offroad cabaple bike with longer range and better lights.
@Stickdinpissluffare4 ай бұрын
@@PatchedBandit Thank you so much 👍 so If they would cost the Same you should choose the rally? Many says its heavier and not so good ofroad like the L
@PatchedBandit4 ай бұрын
L benefits from less plastics that can and probably will brake in offroad ridingf situations. Therefore you might be tempted to put on crashbars to the Rally version which the L in my opinion doesn't need. This bike is pretty heavy compared to some enduro/motocross bikes arleady so I recommend keeping it as light as it can be. With the L you will get a 4kg lighter starting point and with the rally tower and acerbis tank on mine I only gain about 1kg to the bike. Mine is therefore lighter, less plastics to brake, no need for crashbars, better range (acerbis vs base rally model) and I prefer riding the more "slim" bike offroad. L is the one I would go for personally every time. But like I said if you want a bike that is more travel ready out the box then the Rally model is a better option especially if they are close in pricepoint. Rally tower and acerbis tank upgrade cost close to a 1000 € in Finland. But the Rally model is also almost 2000 € more expensive in finland so I'm still saving money with the L. Still using the stock paper filter. All the Level 1 mods are in the bike. It will affect the highway performance too but at the top speeds wind restistance is going to be limiting tha cabability no matter tune or no tune. Here you can probably get a better understanding on how drastic the difference is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnXLYZpnhq6MbaM

Hi @patchedbandit, do you think removing the backfire screen from oem filter will make a difference? Worth doing if sticking with oem filter?
@PatchedBandit9 ай бұрын
I would be very surprised if that would affect the performance much if at all. I went from 16 seconds to 11 seconds doing 30-120kph with the tune already. I might test an aftermarker "high flow" filter later if I can find a good one for it but so far I don't feel that the bike is starving for air.
@mymotosai50369 ай бұрын
@PatchedBandit Thanks for responding 👍 I'm looking forward to the aftermarket airfilter test as everybody seems to include the twin air filter change when upgrading the ecu, and 550 Performance also recommends.

You should use some Uni-Filter Air Box Vents / Filters UFV-6
@PatchedBandit9 ай бұрын
They don't fit well under the plastics of the CRF. There is a good video sample of this on YT and they also let water through easier than the frogskin. I might try and modify a prefilter slot on top or under the frogskin later as I would like to use prefilters to extend the life of the main filter or use a high flow main filter with less effective filtering.

... The video was great, not too long. 300 Rally owner here in Maryland, USA. I love it. Bought it used with 1944 miles. It had Rally Raid suspension Level 1 front and back plus a LOT of other add ons already. Bark busters, skid plate, tail rack, etc. I have since added the 550 Stage 1 ECU. Opened up the top back of the air box like POMMEY BIKER did here. ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpSWfmdofr2Vd8U Installed the DNA air filter and full Yoshimura RS4. I have the CBR stack but because that is much more involved, I wanted to see how it felt with just the changes already. Yes, it does have more pickup with my "seat of the pants" test rides. . Thought about the metal "trumpet". I'm considering cutting the stock intake like you did (maybe a little shorter) heating it with a heat gun and flaring the end out to be similar to the CBR stack and the metal trumpet. What are your thoughts about that? Also, I want to cut that ridge inside the air box down or completely remove it. Thanks again for the video!! . On a side note about youtube and my channel. Now that I am back into riding, it was my first addiction before fishing, I am asking myself, do I combine my addictions in one yt channel and change the name to, "Bay Boat and Bike Life" or start a totally different channel just for the bike info? I really do not want 2 channels. Jeff
@PatchedBandit9 ай бұрын
To the first question I would say that heatgun was the first idea to me too but then I read up about it online a bit more and the consensus online is that rubber doesn't really want to be manipulated with heat. It might get very brittle and even shrink from the heat so it's not like modling plastic. I would steer you away from the heatgun idea from what I have read online. Cutting the ridge off can't do any harm. Not sure how much it is affecting the flow though. Considering youtube is a very tough place to give channel advice as combining 2 subjects might be a great way to identify your channel from all the rest of the million motorcycle channels out there. BUT on the other hand usually sticking to signle subject is considered more effective. It's pretty simple in a way that people watching your fishing videos are most likely not all that interested in your motorcycle content and the same in the opposite way. Like I would be watching your moto content but not necessarily all that interested in the fishing. Even though most like fishing it's not content I look on the weekly or even monthly online. As a general rule it's good to find a niche and stick to it and second rule usually is to keep the channel in that niche. It took me a long time to realise that people are not interested in ME.. But the bikes. And I have steered my content a lot in that direction lately. I started this like many others just to make fun videos about things I do. But I post less and less about my daytoday trips and focus on creating more informational content. I'm still gonna do some entertainment too but I know I'm not very good at it. You might be so that's why it's so tough to give this advice.. I don't want to steer you away from a winning combo. Trial and error my friend! 😄

If in a year, your engine blows a piston. Who pays the bill? I've heard it happen 😔
@PatchedBandit7 ай бұрын
1. Let there be no confusion here. This WILL void the bikes warranty fully. 2. These tunes have not been made to the CRF300 so long that anybody would be hearing of the pistons been blown from these engines. 3. This is not a very intrusive tune in that none of the moving parts are modified. The engine will just breathe better as all the restrictive 'environmentally friendly' blocks are taken off the bike. This being said EVERYONE is doing the work to their own bike on their own responsibility! Only time will tell how the longevity is affected. I am willing to take the risk but I fully understand that this is not for everyone and if reliability is the absolute no.1 thing for any of you I definitely don't recommend doing anything to the stock bike. I am willing to be the test dummy and report back how life is with the tuned Honda. If I blow the engine on mine I will make a video for sure.

Since i added full exhaust, 550 tune with sport cams and minor airbox mod (cut 3'' off snorkel and cut 4- 1" holes), i've put 8,000 miles of mixed pavement/off road with no problems whatsoever. At 7800 i replaced the worn out stock chain and sprockets. When it hits 10,000 miles i'll install the 550 performance big bore kit. I've not heard of any CRF 300l/Rally with "blown piston". These bikes are over built for longevity. So far It's been much more reliable than any of the KTMs ive owned, particularly the 790 adv.
