The best solution to fix that is to replace the handle. It sounds like you've got movement in the splice, which means that the handle has likely started to delaminated

The tool we use to remove wood in the video is called a heel shave. They were purchased 2nd hand off eBay several years ago.

Anyone can do this by thenselves with a simple $10 wood chisel. Ofcourse these guys do a neater job, but you can achieve the same effect at home.
