In Mulan's getting-ready montage, part of the song says she should have a tiny waist, but then the Matchmaker tells her she's "too skinny, not good for bearing sons." I don't really understand why the contradiction exists, really. I understand the expectation for Chinese women of the era to have boys, and if they don't have kids or only have girls, they're considered dishonorable. (And as another commenter said, this was reasonable cause for divorce.) I don't agree with these expectations/gender norms, but I also don't understand why the movie mixed this up.

after watching "Empresses in the Palace", I now understand the reason why the grandmother gave Mulan the "lucky cricket": she was *praying for Mulan to be reproductively fertile* (which was referenced by the Matchmaker who all but referenced Zhao Feiyan when talking about Mulan's skinny hips; infertility and childlessness (read: no sons) was one of the "Seven Reasons for Divorce" (七出)) explanation: a type of cricket was synonymous for "many sons/descendants", and one such gate in the Forbidden City's Inner Palace area named after said cricket (Zhongsimen Gate (螽斯門)) became a _de facto_ pilgrimage site for all its women especially the imperial family, as it was a "good luck charm" for the continuity of the imperial family lineage

I think Mushu is overrated because he’s bipedal meaning he can gesticulate and be more expressive through body language than Donkey from Shrek. If Donkey was the bipedal one though I don’t think half as many people would care about Mushu.

I know I’ve said that Mushu is the worst character in the movie, but honestly, the cricket is worse! I mean, who on earth thought having a cutesy-poo child character in the film would be a good idea? The only scene he/she has any real purpose in is the interview at the beginning, and even in that they were bad. I mean 1:29 is just cringeworthy.
