As much as I hate Mushu, at least he has purpose in the movie. The cricket doesn’t. You could remove him/her from the entire movie after Mulan’s interview, and it would change nothing. I mean, there’s already a “fallback” animal character for Mushu to interact with (Kahn the horse). But no, they had to have a cutesy child character in order to appeal to an even younger audience. I remember reading that Chicken Run originally had a character like that that they ended up scrapping. Why couldn’t Disney do the same thing here?
