I met Mark in Darwin some years ago and found him to be a ripping bloke. Junior was the most elegant batsman I ever saw and as a slip fieldsman one of the very, very best.

he could do it all. I was living in England when he played for Essex. He was a star with bat ball and as a fielder. As good a slip as I have seen. And he was tough. He just did not carry on. And with Mark you would not need DRS, he did not appeal unless the LBW was out.

'the faster this guy gets a hundred and gets out, better for us (india), or else he will score 10-12 runs every over till the end' - how right i was proved in a ODI WC match!!! the man milked the indian bowling effortlessly for the next 1/2 doz overs . his upright stance and incredible bat speed and timing- unmatched and cant be copied - like viv-richards' style . and his fielding and catching - catlike movements. but never seemed to sledge or say anything on the field. and then came the series against kronje's men. those guys gave all the test teams reality checks.

Mark is the real Waugh. He was elegant, classy, had beautiful strokes, a positive approach and was a superb fielder. The other Waugh was an ugly cricketer with an awkward batting style, very lucky that his hundreds of edges and lobs never went to fielders, that the Aussie Board found him a useful tool and kept him playing. A plodder was Steve, a stylish dasher was Mark Waugh .
