Some years ago, as a young opening-bat club player who had never been taught anything, I was given an MCC Coaching book as a work leaving present. There were sections on batting by Boycott, Richards and others but it was the section by Boycott that had a big influence on me. His tips on preparation, concentration, foot movement - brilliant. It would be fair to say that had a huge, positive influence on my playing career. Yes, Boycott could be a boring batsman to watch but he was fantastically effective and any young player who dismisses what he has to say is missing a big trick.

I am Australian, and from Queensland, and the little Tozzie (Tasmanian Aussie) legend of Ricky Ponting is one of my favourite ever players in my 45 years (he is only 2 years my junior), but I am disappointed Michael Vaughn himself did not contribute to this discussion on batting as he was a class batsman also. Ponting's 156 in the 4th innings of the match to save that test at Old Trafford in 2005 was great, but not greater than Vaughn's own 166 in the 1st innings of the same match.
@Bernie83304 жыл бұрын
@Saif Ullah Khan Not when he was playing he wasn't but he does seem to be somewhat forgotten in retirement for some reason. Maybe he has just been overshadowed by Kevin Pietersen a little as Pietersen came along around the end of Vaughn's peak period, and Pietersen had a larger than life aura in a similar way to someone like Viv Richards.

Wow, very interesting to know the perspectives of batting legends across the generations. Boycott was famous for not getting out, but he did not score that much. He played in a different era, when no one cared about the scoring rate, or strike rate. Ricky Ponting is the batting legend, who can score at will and has that lethal short arm pull to anything that is slightly short. All round batsman, and very aggressive player.Obviously he is not very dear to Indians. Micheal Vaughan is more in the mould of Geoff Boycott but scored a much faster pace.
