McSweeney wasn't a weak link, he'd be a good number 4-5 but opening with Khawaja ends up with two openers that don't have enough scoring intent. Even though Warner wasn't making runs his attacking nature complimented Khawaja well. With Konstas in it gives a more dynamic opening combo. No shock that Khawaja went from scoring exclusively single digits to making really impactful 40-70 run knocks over the last two tests

Even with Marnus/Smith showing some slumps (before both had important innings) McSweeny wasn't good enough to deserve first crack over them two with all the runs they've built up over the years. He'll get another crack at test cricket in the next 1-2 years and hopefully seize his opportunity then. As long as he stays in form
