That was only his second test. Superb. With a bit better management just think what could/should have been over the next decade.

@andrew7440 C'mon now, that's not true and you know it. Tufnell was was no Underwood, Murali, Jadeja or Ashwin. And not much with the bat either!
@andrew74403 ай бұрын
@@cquilty1 Sorry what's not true as I don't know? a)That bowling was superb. b)Tufnell had one or two issues on and off the field, but played only 42 tests in 12 years. The majority of which he was the best spinner in the country with over 1000 1st class wickets. Various captains have mentioned Tufnell could be hard work, but does that say more about them than him? He was more like Underwood than you think, and if he'd played on uncovered wickets his wicket tally would have been even better.

Eng really underachieved in the 90s. They had players like Gooch and Smith in the early part of the 90s then for the whole of 90s they had Atherton, Stewart, Nasser, Thorpe, Gough, Caddick, Tufnell, Fraser, Butcher, Malcolm. Headley , Cork.

The problem was often fitness. The three best seamers, Fraser, Gough and Caddick played together just once. Selection vagaries, but mostly injuries to one or the other. Only solved by central contracts.
@hovefactually750510 сағат бұрын
Apart from Gooch and Smith, only one of those you mention (Thorpe) averaged over 40 in Tests. You don't win Tests with people scoring 30-odd. And most of the bowlers were crocked most of the time.

I only started watching cricket in 1992 so please forgive me. Is this really the same Phil Tufnell I saw being spanked due to his buffet bowling in the 90s? He actually looks GOOD here!

No, there were multiple Phil Tufnells knocking around in the '90s, it got quite confusing.

Tuffers was so talented. Great flight and dip. Makes you think how good he could have been if he’d been supported more and told that he was a great bowler and was going to be a regular member of the England team. Look at those players in the England team, Gooch, Stewart, Robin Smith, Jack Russell. Genuinely great cricketers. Australia were confident and played to their strengths and to the best of their abilities. England desperately needed central contracts and the same team on a regular basis. Imagine what that would have done for Ramprakash and Hick. Ramprakash and Hick were brilliant batsmen and should have rocked Test Cricket. Oh man I could go on 😂
@jshaers965 сағат бұрын
Yes, but Test cricket is called that for a reason and talent isn't enough, you need mental strength too. The players you mention were gifted, yes, but they were all given multiple opportunities and never quite made the grade.
