Cricketing Legends - Dennis Lillee (BBC, 1991)

With his thick moustache and bristling aggression, Dennis Lillee was one of the most brilliant and charismatic cricketers of his era. His new ball partnership with Jeff Thomson was, perhaps, the most feared in the modern game. Courageous, controversial and always belligerently determined, Lillee overcame serious injury to complete a very distinguished cricketing career. This video includes a contribution from Rodney Marsh who took 355 victims (95 c Marsh b Lillee) - a World Test record.

I was at the MCG in Bay 13 when Dennis broke the world record - it remains my favourite day at a sporting event. I remember a bloke standing on a foam Esky, and when Greg Chappell caught the ball, he leapt in the air and came down on the Esky, smashing it to pieces and spilling his beer everywhere. As a 12 year old, I thought it was hilarious.

I think Dennis was one of the first real "professional" cricketers in the way he thought about the art of fast bowling, about nutrition, fitness, even keeping warm on the fall of a wicket. As a junior fast bowler aged 16 in 1984, I lapped up his Book, "Fast Bowling" and even 40 years later, I can still remember the wisdom and still relate it to kids today. One of his mantras was the opposite of what I was always being told, "slow down and concentrate on line and length" - Dennis used to say "if a kid can bowl fast, concentrate on getting him to bowl as fast as possible, there are a 10 military medium bowlers for every genuine quick. He might bowl 2 wides an over but also bowl 2 genuine jaffas as well. Still think that is spot on.

The great Sir Richard Hadlee used to have four key words he used to say to himself when bowling, they were 'rhythm, off stump, desire and Lillee' That last word was to ask himself, "what would Lillie do in this situation?" DK Lillie is the fast bowlers, fast bowler. He perfected the art of thinking players out, by setting them up to make an error.

I remember playing schoolyard cricket and wanting to bowl like DK Lillee, we even had the ridiculously long run up that would have us exhausted by the time we actually bowled the ball. I also remember the chants of Lillee at the WACA and the amazing atmosphere. Those were the days of cricket that we won't ever get back.

What a wonderful duo Lillee and Thomson were, much like Warne and McGrath. Even when Lillee slowed down, he was still good enough to be man of the series in his final Ashes tests. Also great to see a time when batsmen "walked" when they knew they were out, and nobody wore a helmet. As well as being able to watch the cricket all day long, rather than just an hour of highlights in the evening.

@graemealexander8804
@graemealexander8804 3 жыл бұрын
@@abhijitghosh450 Yes dude, we've seen them all. Lillee is the top of the tree. You obviously haven't heard the statements from the greatest players who faced him & the commentators who watched him play. You obviously don't know that Malcolm Marshall had no clue how Lillee bowled the inswinger, leg cutter & outswinger & asked him to teach him. You obviously don't know that the legendary Tony Cosier rated Lillee as the best fast bowler to ever play on the Carribean shores, nor that the great West Indian quartets of Lillee's era, rate Lillee as the best fast bowler they've seen. I met & talked to Joel Garner. He said Dennis was the greatest. You probably don't know Lillee took a further 103 wkts in WSC SuperTests & World XI matches, bringing his total to 89 Tests, 458 wkts @ 23.91, 29x 5wkt hauls and 9x 10wkt hauls. Best Bowling 12/89 & 12/92 vs World XI's. At one stage, Dennis had a strike rate of 39.1 against World XI sides. His wkts are of higher value as he played against the mighty West Indies every 2nd summer & also played against them in WSC SuperTests, as well as the World XI sides. He played against the 1972 World XI side as well, taking 24 wkts in just 4 Tests. Lillee also still holds the fast bowling record for the most wkts in a Calendar Year, 85. He has the finest Test record of any fast bowler. No one has a better record against top notch opponents & standard. Marshall is the 2nd best, the best overseas bowler to ever play in Australia. Wasim, the best left armer, but in my opinion, he'd make the top 6. At his peak, Waqar Younis was better than Wasim. Lillee is the master, Rolls Royce of Fast Bowlers.

What made the mid 70's so scarry was batsmen were still not wearing helmets, had less other protection, no limit on bouncers per over, most sides had previously only had just one genuinely fast bowler, and the pitches were slightly more erratic than now. Just one fast bowler could be simply defended, sometimes two, until they simply run out of energy, but 3 or 4, and the batsman were forced to play sweeps and pulls to man destroying missiles which would have been much better left to go over the stumps. Once fine batsman started to look like frightened lambs to the slaughter, and a very real sense of danger or imminent death started to permeate the game at the highest level. Indeed it was fortunate that more batsman did not prematurely end up visiting the Great Shower Roon in The Sky. However, soon bouncers became limited, better gloves, body armor, and eventually, helmets turned up and a more 'normal' battle was resumed.

@@adam872 Correct. Lillee was the leading wicket taker in WSC SuperTests, with 79 wkts in 15 SuperTests, against the mighty West Indies & World XI's. 1977-79. Took 24 wkts in 4 Tests vs World XI in 1972, including 12/92 & 12/89 VS WSC World XI during 1977-79. His true record is 89 "Tests" 458 wkts great record, as he played against the mighty West Indies every 2nd summer in Australia, equivalent to a world xi side. Would be over 1/3rd of his wkts are Test level or higher. Lillee took 54 WSC ODI wkts against West Indies and World XI @ 14 a piece. ODI record is 157 wkts at around 18.50. Amongst the greatest ever.

The #Greatest XI of All Time 1 Jack Hobbs 2 Len Hutton 3 Don Bradman (C.) 4 Sachin Tendulkar 5 Viv Richards 6 Gary Sobers 7 Alan Knott (W.) 8 Shane Warne 9 Wasim Akram 10 Malcolm Marshall 11 Dennis Lillee 12th: Imran Khan. Substitutes: ( George Headley , Brian Lara , W.G Grace , Muttiah Muralitharan , Sydney Barnes ) Manager :- Sir Frank Worrell . - The above XI is Probably the Most Credible All Time Test XI List in Cricket History which is Co-incidentally the Mixer of WISDEN and ESPN Cricinfo All Time XI List. It's a Full 16 Man Squad and I have Deservingly put Two Proper Openers Hobbs and Hutton As they have a Great Records everywhere and seemingly Great Chemistry and Connection within them as they played mostly after post WW1 Era from 1920 onwards with much better Competitiveness and in a Developing Test Cricket era compared to 18th or 19th Century Cricket. And I have Top 6 Strong Batting Line up so I went with a Specialist Wicket Keeper Alan Knott ahead of Wicket Keeper Batsman Adam Gilchrist who unfortunately Missed out due to I have a Strong top 6 Batting order as well as Strong tail enders too like Warne , Akram and Marshall who all can Bat also. So I went with a Specialist Wicket Keeper with a descent batting record, so I went with Alan Knott who was also a Crisis Batsman. And But Gilchrist definitely has make into Second Test XI or Alternate XI of above All Time XI List. Then I have a 1 Great All Rounder Sir Garfield Sobers who is the Great Left Handed Batsman and can bowl three different variations Bowling and 1 Great Spinner Shane Warne So he would have a Great Right hand - Left Hand and Leg Spin / Off Spin Combinations with Gary Sobers. And at Last I have deservingly Put probably the 3 most Genuine Fast and Complete Bowlers in History Akram , Marshall and Lillee as 3 Pace Bowlers with Great Statistic Records among them who all also played in The Most Golden , Toughest and Competitive Era of Test Cricket From 1970 to 2000 Era. And also Gary Sobers who can Bowl Spin , Medium pace and Fast Bowling, So that's why I didn't pick Sydney Barnes, as Barnes can also bowl Spin and pace but he was more of a Spinner than pacer, and he was a Leg spinner but I have Genuine Leg Spinner like Shane Warne So instead I went with 3 Out in Out Genuine Fast Bowlers with Gary Sobers who can Bowl same as Barnes with Multiple Varieties but Sobers was off Spinner, and that's why he would have a great spin bowling Combination with Leg spinner like Warne. And Imran Khan as the 12th Man and W.G Grace along with other legends in Substitutes as Grace was an All Rounder and a Father Figure Cultural Icon of Cricket and Sir Frank Worrell is The Best Manager the Game has ever seen who can Guide your Team and Bring out the best from above players. P.S - Steven Smith , Virat Kohli and Pat Cummins are Active Players. So I will Judge them after they will retire, so we can get the clear picture of their Overall career. And Dickie Bird , David Shepherd and Simon Taufel are Umpires of above team as well as Richie Benaud , Bill Lawry and Tony Greig are into the Commentary Box.

His record is amazing. 355 Wickets in only 70 tests. When McGrath and Warne have twice as many tests. So in comparison with the great bowlers of the 90's and beyond, that puts Lillee on 700. Argue against that haters. I'm not Aussie by the way, I'm English. But I bow to class. And Dennis Lillee was class.
