The 1996 'Friendship Cup' , also known as the 1996 Sahara 'Friendship Cup' for sponsorship reasons was a One Day International cricket series which took place between 14-23 September 1996.[1] The tournament was held in Canada, which was seen as perfect neutral territory for India and Pakistan to play each other. The tournament was won by Pakistan, who won the series 3-2. This was the first edition of the annual event.

The 'Caught at Short Point' has a bit of a history behind it. This tactic was first deployed by Pak against Sachin in 1996. He got got at least 3 Times. I remember him Slap Cutting a delivery from Wasim to Inzi at short point. BUt Sachin, as usual, never ever got out against Pak in that manner after that. But a year or two later, South Africa did the same in Sharjah. They had him cut Pollock and kept the short point in. But Sachin didnt fall in the trap. Then they turned to other tactic by putting in two Short-MidWickets against Fanie DeVilliers and in that tournament, I guess Sachin was caught twice while playing his favorite flick shot. I mean, we hardly see such 'TACTICS' and Strategy these days because of Video analyics. And more so because, Batsmen have more obvious issues which are very well known to teams. Kohli having difficulty outside off. Kohli not using his feet against spin.. so on, so forth. But during those days, trying to find something wrong in Sachin's armor was liking finding a needle in haystack. So they had him play to his strengths

I remember Fanie Devillers had a stranglehold on him. He simply can't get him away and on numbers of occasions had him caught at midwicket. Not many talk how great was Fanie in Indian dust Bowls. He rarely would allow beyond 20 runs in his 10 over spell. South Africa thoroughly dominated India along with Pakistan in the 90s.

Great highlights .. Wasim Akram thinking cricketer .. with a strategy to trap Tendulkar which he did multiple times in the series .. Pakistan came back strongly in the last 2 matches to win the 1st Sahara Cup .. remember being told be a friend in the morning before school starts of the results .. because matches went till late !!

I grew up in the 90's watching cricket and mt best friend was from India. He loved Srinath for his effort and aggression. I think he carried his side of things pretty decently for India & then the likes of Zaheer and earlier for sometime there was Agarkar.
