Big fan of the slower opening bowler!amazing line and length, subtle in swing. The sort of bowler that makes you take a risk to score. A lot of batsmen would throw their wicket away.

Hey mate, quality video, one of your best yet!! Seriously interesting and helpful to see how you approach the mental side of batting. Used some of the techniques you used in this video when batting yesterday ("win this ball" , setting little milestones of 10, and telling myself to refocus after a stint at the non-strikers end) and the change in my game was instant. Never felt so calm, focused and in control mentally whilst at the crease. Way more focused on each ball and the results were awesome... my first century of the season! Looking forward to learning more from your future videos!

My real name is Barry Cashin and I was opening bat for Shenley village CC from 1993 to 2003. I always talked to myself and psyched it out in the middle. I urge young players always to analyse their game ball by ball, it’s a great way of engaging within the game and watching what you do. You WILL score more runs.

When I go out and bat , I am always alert and watching everything that is happening on the ground. Great content Tom. I have been watching your stuff for over a year now, I have enjoyed your reflections on the game very much. As someone from India who has been living and playing league cricket in England for nearly twenty years now, I certainly relate to batting on a green top (I open) where the Duke ball never stops swinging! I have never got to the professional level you have, but it is great to see that batsmen of all abilities addressing the same range of mental and technical issues. I am assuming you normally do not talk as much to yourself between balls during normal games? I get out a lot between 30 and 70, so one of my problems is definitely to do with mid-innings concentration. My normal pre-delivery check-list is pretty simple - I tell myself to check my feet, grip, head and watch the ball. In between deliveries, I walk away to square leg and then start again. On some days, when it works, I can almost shut out everything including the slips and the keeper. But obviously, it does not work on many days. I am wondering whether I should follow your example and try talking a bit more to myself! Anyway - good luck with everything and I look forward to your next upload.
@cricketmentoring6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts mate. I certainly don't normally talk that much during an innings. Was to give the audience something interesting. I normally try and sing a song to myself in between balls or look into the distance and zone out a bit. Something that helps me stay relaxed mentally. Worth trying new things in my opnion mate...
@ThePabloMukherjee6 жыл бұрын
Cheers Tom - yeah I zone out in between with a little walk and a stare into distance to take in the environment around the grounds. Maybe I should hum a little tune while I do it! Are you planning another UK trip at some point? I am wondering whether you would be up for a spot of club coaching session in Oxford if you are, and what your rates would be? BTW, I have an open stance like you but I noticed that your back foot is very parallel to the crease (which allows your back swing to come down straight and give you good access to the ball), whereas mine sometimes tend to go around a bit to align itself a bit more to the front foot.This feels more comfortable,but it does mean that sometimes my swing is coming down at an angle and if I am hitting mid-wicket/square instead of mid-on and getting out lbw or bowled. Should my backfoot be totally parallel to the crease and dictate how open my front foot should be? Hope you are enjoying being back in Perth.

"Gone into my shell abit here". I'm not a great batsmen, but I often find myself batting for long periods of time and the best thing I have found is to enjoy defending, to find the same amount of satisfaction not matter if ur playing a forward defence or swivelling on a nice pullshot. If your playing a solid defensive shot, balls coming out the middle, weight in the right spot and the ball quickly rolls to the fielder. That should be as bigger victory as hitting a boundary. I've also got a career average of about 20 so don't take my advice too seriously. Great vid👍🏻👍🏻

The film runs out the ball before you go out? Fair enough. It’s actually a really good video about how emotions and attitude inform your batting. Early on your saying “ball on its merits” a lot and “this ball” but that actually drops off and what it’s replaced with is you sort of predicting where they are going to put the ball. Sort of explains where the mind is focusing - what it’s focusing on and how that can lead to error.

You always look perfectly balanced just prior to the release of the ball but you must have a mental tendency to want to move forward because you quite often miss an easy clip off your hips when the ball is going down leg side (tend to fall over by the time the ball comes to you). Awesome footage though mate.
