Since the Cricut software is cloud based, the choice was really simple for me, Silhuette all the way.

Most importantly the cloud based software of cricut wants to charge you for using your machine with vector graphics of your own design (if you import more than 5) and you can't do that without the internet either. They can basically turn their support off one day and turn your perfectly good machine into lifeless junk. It's not written anywhere on the box and I find it borderline legal, since it's false advertising. There were class action lawsuits against this company because of that. I feel like the main reason why they're still on the market is because of millions of dollars they spend on sponsored KZbin reviews and materials.

@@digitalghosts4599 Unfortunately this isnt true. Cricut doesn't charge you for uploading to the software. They tried to do it once but backpedalled within days, and this was several years ago. Yes they can brick a machine but not without reason.

This is hands down the best video I've come across that compares Cricut and Silhouette (and I've watched many over the last couple of days!). Thank you so much--I'll definitely check out your other videos, and have subscribed. I still can't decide between the two, but your positive comments about Cricut's customer care are swaying me in that direction (and I have heard very negative comments about Silhouette customer care, unfortunately). I have had a cricut since 2006 absolutely love it and my monthly subscription. Having heard so many good things about silhouette 2 years ago I purchased a cameo 4 bundle and upgraded to business edition when it was 49.00. I set it off to the side to give 100% during my Christmas vacation to learn. I was so frustrated just registering it I threw it back in the box and printed off a return shipping label. Slept on it and the next morning with a clear mind unboxed it and tried again come to find out I mistyped a serial number so I decided to keep it. Fast forward 2 years later it is back in the box I hated learning the software well now my work schedule is better working weekend midnights so I have mon through Fridays off and recently purchased an online class with SVG &me which is teaching me Inkscape and GUESS WHAT? also included is how to use silhouette. So I am determined to master the cameo and business edition.

So I had 2 crickets and finally switched over to Silhouette this year. I will say, there are def pros and cons to both but the reason I switched is because I just couldn't get my Cricuts to cut consistently. Maybe I was unlucky with 2 duds, but I think the Software was just too annoying to me. I loved the machine itself because they have more colors and I prefer the way they look over the Cameo. But I just gave up after months of trying to make it work for me. I've had the Cameo for 2 months and it instantly was so much easier to use and cut way more consistently. The software is just more intuitive IMO. The only main con on the Cameo is how LOUD this machine is. It is jarringly loud. You can watch tons of YT videos about it, it's a known issue. However, I work with my headphones on so I don't really care that much. Just walk away from it. In general, I'm just having a much better experience with my Cameo, so if Cricut isn't working out for you for whatever reason, I think Cameo will be a good switch. And in terms of which one to pick first, honestly, if it's your first time, I think Cricuts are cheaper and there are always sales on them, so maybe try Cricut first and then if it doesn't work out for you, you should exchange it for a Cameo.

The danger with Cricut is that they've shown themselves willing to implment new pricing / usage schemes when and how they want . . . so who knows, you could buy yourself a lovely new Cricut now, then in 18 months you're told you can only use it 4 times a week unless you pay them $49 a month (or whatever), this is simply not a viable option for a lot of people.
@KellyRossouw

@@kikiflash8156 A while back Cricut wanted to make more money from their customers, so they - without warning - introduced a scheme, where you could only upload 20 designs a month to Design Space (and you had to use Design Space to use your Cricut) if you wanted unlimited uploads (unlimited uses of your Cricut) you need to subscribe to a monthly subscription service . . . so basically your Cricut went from free to use (just like your printer or microwave!) to a paid subscription, everyone was outraged, a lot of backlash, and finally they removed this scheme . . . but . . . we learnt what they were like as a company, we now know that at any point in the future, without warning and without consultation, they might decide to charge you a monthly fee for the free use of your own machine . . . and for me that's a reason to avoid Cricut machines, great machines, but they carry a risk, I suspect they will try again with a similar scheme at some point.

@@laineystar00 No, they abandoned this scheme because there was so much criticism, so you're safe . . . for the moment ! Lol !! . . . The only lingering concern is that Cricut have shown what they are prepared to do, the risk is that sometime in the future (6 months, a year, maybe never) - when a buyout is looming or revenue is tight or the simply want to squeeze more money out of the customer - they impose a similar scheme, maybe join our $40/month club or you're limited to 4 cuts a week . . . !?

Wow! I love how you have designed your silhouette cutter. It’s BEAUTIFUL!!! I know I’m a year late seeing your video, but I’m new to the Silhouette Cameo 4. I have the CRICUT Explorer Air 2, and recently (the Saturday before Mother’s Day, 2023) I acquired the Silhouette Cameo 4 from someone sold to me off Facebook Marketplace as a “New” cutter. It has a big long scratch on the cover, which is about 6 inches long, the autoblade was not properly installed, and it was shaking and rattling very loudly in the left corner when I turned it on. Although, she told me that she sold it because she already was comfortable using the CRICUT Explorer Air 2, and decided not to learn the new machine and its software. She said she turned it on and back off because it was louder than the CRICUT. So she placed it in her closet. She shipped the machine to me loosely in a liquor box with about 4 small ziplock bags in the box. Needless to say, I was shocked when I received it. The noise it made was not normal. Although, the Cameo is louder than the CRICUT, but the shaking, rattling noise was not the normal sound. The machine did not cut anything at first. I went to KZbin to ask about the noise, and quickly found the answer. The carriage needed to be reset by turning the machine off, and manually sliding the carriage from left to right about 6 times. Then, turn the machine back on with the carriage still in the right hand corner. When I turned it back on, it automatically aligned itself properly to the left position. The loud noise was now gone. The autoblade: I thought the blade was dull or defective, so around 3:00 A.M.,I woke up with that blade on my mind. I went to Amazon to order a couple of replacement blades only to see the product video, which demonstrated how to properly install the autoblade. OH MY GOODNESS!!!! The blade only needed to be pushed down into the carriage to close the gap between the carriage and the blade, and then push in the locking mechanism to hold the autoblade securely in place. Now, this machine cuts really good. It quietly aligns itself every time. However, I do need to learn the correct settings for the various materials that I desire to cut. The liquor box didn’t include nothing else; just the machine and the one autoblade. Nothing else. I have concluded that the lady thought she had unloaded a defective machine for $200. I thought the same thing, but, so far, the machine is working fine now. I did cut a couple of designs, and it left the last character off the design on both pieces of HTV. So far, that has only happened twice. I wonder what could be causing this problem of leaving off the last letter in a design. I had to cut the letters separately and piece the design together to press them with my heat press. I also have figure out why the mirror option doesn’t work unless I flip the design before clicking SEND. when it asks to mirror the design, the image doesn’t actually cut mirrored. I have ruined two pieces of 3D PUFF HTV. I HAVE to figure this out. Meanwhile. I will be flipping my designs before clicking SEND. I have ordered two replacement autoblades, two deep cut blades, two 12x24 long mats, two 12x12 mats, and the stand for stacking the two cutters. The CRICUT is one the top with the bottom screwed onto the top of the white stand, and the Silhouette Cameo 4 is on the bottom. What do you think about this situation? I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thank you, Donna Watson

Thank you for this great video. I found that you were very fair and impartial in your assessment of both. I have both and have had the Cameo for about 8 years and a cricut of some sort since it came out in 2005. I've had about 10 different cricuts starting from the baby one, the Expression, Air, the Imagine, to the Maker so I am partial and have had extreme success with Cricut support.. I initially purchased the cameo1 for the print and cut feature because at that time Cricut did not print then cut. Then the Imagine came out at it Print and cut on the same machine. It was a HP printer and Cricut in one. That was my favorite Cricut machine. I, upgraded a few years ago to the cameo3 for the rhinestone feature. I rarely use the cameo because being a Cricut user I never felt comfortable with the silhouette software. I don't care about vectors, and trace lines, it was too much of me.

The Silhouette is insanely loud, and their customer service is pretty much non existent. I do not care at all about offline, or online. I am always online, so thinking about those being a deciding factor is not something I would even let determine my purchase of either. I use my business edition to design sometimes, if I need too, which again is rare, and save it and then always cut with my Cricut. This is a great video, thank you for making it!! Thanks so much for this video review of the two cutting machines! It was funny, because as I was watching it, one of the make-or-break things for me was "why does Cricut have to be online in order to work? That seems suspicious..." unless I'm misunderstanding what that means, as I understood that it needed to be connected to the internet. I'm planning on creating my own stickers (kiss cut on sticker sheets), and when I got to the part where you mentioned if that's something I wanted to do, then the Cameo is better for me. I had planned to design my stickers on my own, so I wouldn't need the design studio...as long as I can print them out from my printer, and then cut them out on the cutting machine - although, if I can use the specific basic program to assign which gets dye cut and which gets kiss cut on my Samsung Tablet, that would really be helpful, as I don't have a Windows or Mac computer - just Linux.
@KellyRossouw
@KellyRossouw 7 ай бұрын
Your understanding is correct. Its nothing suspicious, its just the way their software operates. If you have a stable internet connection its not a problem, though very rarely it might be. But yes, if print and cut is your main focus you have much better flexibility with the Cameo :) Just a note - Silhouette Studio is only useable on a computer. Silhouette Go can be used but you cannot modify anything.

@@KellyRossouw Ah, ok. So, for the Silhouette, say I designed my stickers and everything, and I put the file onto a Windows computer, that's something I can completely do offline and don't need to do anything online with it? And, I can also set it up so that it knows what to dye cut and and what to kiss cut? Sorry for all the questions, I had been wanting to get a cutting machine for some time, and I wanted to be sure I know what I'm getting myself into, so I'm not stuck with a model that I hate 😉

G'day luv (Aussie term meaning mate in the female) i just stumbled across your vid. As ive found recently the Adoption of these machines in the Rc industry (the home builder of Rc trucks, planes ETC) 😁we have been using it for vinyl wraps and stencils for painting inside the bodys. i cant afford a new machine of either brand but the older models of cricut an Cameo, can they do the simple cutting but also the more complicated emblems?. Cheers for the great vid🤗 it gave me insight into both brands🤔 from this ol Gen X'er, here, Queensland Australia.

G'day mate! The older machines are just as adept at cutting small, intricate designs as the newer machines. The Joy will be your cheapest entry into market out of all of the machines (new anyway), but the older Cameos should be around half the price of a new Joy. they all still work extremely well :)

The Silhouette software is fantastic for creating your own designs. The support has gotten terrible. They don’t test new software releases on the older machines and instead, rely on their customers to report problems. The frustration can be unbelievable as part of the time you’re forced to upgrade and then downgrade due to the problems. Tech help consists of emailing them and waiting for a response which can take days. Even when you explain the steps you’ve already taken, they’ll suggest you take exactly the same steps, like it’s just a canned answer. Ugh!!!. Then you get to contact them again, which is really disrespectful of your time.

Thank you for this very helpful video! I was planning to buy a Silhouette Cameo 4 pro mainly for leather cutting (love the huge cutting area). However, I am now a bit unsure as you said that you had much better results for leather with the Cricut due to the drive housing and the way the knife rotates. Could you please explain this further? I thought that every cutter needs to rotate the knife so I am wondering whats the difference in the technique of the knives between the cricut and the cameo in order to understand why you get better results with the cricut? Thank you very much in advance!
@KellyRossouw
@KellyRossouw 2 жыл бұрын
The mechanical housing allows the blade to move around in the holder, and not use the material to turn like the Cameo does. The less pressure and unnecessary cuts you can do on your material, the better it is for the adhesion to your mat and a better end result. Imagine if one of those turning cuts ends up pulling your material off the mat. Eeek. Also - sometimes you dont want the surrounding part of the material to be destroyed. I also tested the rotary blades side by side on the same design, both brand new, same material, Cricut cut through it first pass, Cameo didnt cut through neatly at all. Not saying this will be the same for all materials, but I feel that it did a better job

Meanwhile I learned about the loops and cuts of the Cameo and came to the result that none of them (Cameo/Cricut) fit my needs :/ The extra cuts of the cameo are a no go with my expensive leather and dont work with my patterns and regarding Cricut, the software (the software itself and especially the fact that it is cloud based and cricut reserves the right to use your designs) as well as the small working area are a no go too :( So I will sharpen my knives and keep cutting my leather by hand :)

I really thought you were going to win me over to the cricut with that cut and print 😣😣😣 I’ve got the cameo 3 for about 3 years now and have still not gotten it right 😫😫 no matter how many tutorials I’ve watched. But I will press on until I get it right

Silhouette support is sub-par in US. Done by email. I have a silhouette (3 yrs) and will be switching to cricut.

I was just talking with a fellow Crafter after I just ordered my cricut, but they said the cricket has a bunch of hidden fees and even some fees to unlock features, is this true?
@KellyRossouw
@KellyRossouw 2 жыл бұрын
Not really. There is Cricut Access which allows you use of their own designs, fonts and some features that literally only make life easier, but you can still do everything else manually

@@BMO94994 no you don't. Only to have it automatically removed. I don't like that anyways, it cuts off corners a lot.

Whenever I have purchased designs in Silhouette store, the automatically get put in my library. I don't have to do anything special with them. Has this changed? I haven't bought anything from the store in a while. Also. you talked about cutting scraps, couldn't the pix scan mat do that?
@KellyRossouw
@KellyRossouw 8 ай бұрын
It hasnt changed no, but the process isnt as seamless as Cricut Design Space. The pix scan mat could do it yes, it is just very difficult to work with

i have both silhouette cameo 3 and cricut. i found cricut is the best and i use most of the time. Silhouette cameo 3 is a nightmare for me cos their always have problem with their software. Now my cameo 3 is in the store room untouch for 3byears now. i would said if you are new to the cutter machine go for cricut trust me you will falling in love with the machine. Don't waste money for silhouette.

I would never buy a Cricut. I make my own designs. I certainly would not want to make my own designs and then decide that I wanted another machine and not be able to take my designs with me. Cricut sued Make the Cut software to use with all cutting machines. It is a simple software which allows you to save your own designs on your own computer. Cricut is proprietary driven, and was not making money off the simpler software.

Hi Keith! If you dont have reliable internet then I might suggest the Silhouette rather. Cricut Design Space is reliant on an internet connection (although you can use it offline), but features are limited when offline

Im in the same boat with Keith... Im sitting here watching videos trying to find out what would be best especially starting out. I dont like complex but i also dont want alot of limitations... Im a hands on & visual person when it comes to learning new things... I mainly want to make tshirts! And maybe print labels for candles or customize stickers 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
