I've been a fan of Charlie Chan for years and it'd good to see them again. It was pressure from protest groups insisting that Chan was an ugly stereotype. I never understood because he was always the smartest one in the room.

I agree. I watched them with my dad in the 70s when I was about 10. At the time I didn't know he wasn't actually Asian. I did notice that he was smart, clever, and resourceful. Those who knew him professionally treated him with great respect and deference. Those who didn't know him and treated him badly were soon made to look foolish. He handle people's ignorance and outright racism with dignity and bearing. He didn't need a safe space because he was a real man.

I grew up watching Charlie Chan movies thank you for putting it on you tube watch it mostly every night before I go to bed these movies I cherish you will never see these movies today or ever and they did not use high tech computer gadgets like today movies

Several references were made in this movie about television. Hummm...interesting. This movie was released in 1945.

The first television was invented in 1926. There was a demonstration of television at the 1939 New York World's Fair. But commercial television didn't start broadcasting until the late 1940's.

Those interactions between Birmingham and Ben had me rolling the first time I saw this movie. Still breaks me up every time :-) and the cleaning lady, you have to listen for it at 11:22 - "Yumpin Yiminy!"

Mantan Moreland was great in his own right, but his comedic skills are out of place in a Charlie Chan movie. Charlie's son, be it Keye Luke, Sen Yung, or Benson Fong, offered plenty of comic relief.

Great movie...but the whole third rate Birmingham Brown Vaudeville routine was bad at the time and even worse today.... nothing worse than a dying comedian forcing funny.

He was just fine AS SUCH, and so was his buddy Ben Carter. But they were out of place in a movie like this, where there was plenty of comic relief in the person of Charlie's son Jimmy. Would have been far better for them to have had a movie by themselves to show off their comedic talents.
