No one could have imagined that almost one hundred years later, the audience for the Charlie Chan franchise would be as strong as it is today. Unless films were Academy Award winners, no great effort was made to do any extra preservation of old films. Maybe modern technology can retrieve old films from many countries. The trash being filmed in today's entertainment industries is seldom watchable or will be missed!

Every generation moans how the grass was greener back in the day. (Actually, glorifying grandparents' generation, but degrading parents' gen) This movie belongs to an entertaining detective genre, not much different from gazillion of superhero movies made today, or dumb cookie cutter musicals of so-called "Golden era of Hollywood". Just saying, plot line of this movie is not necessarily "Crime and punishment" either.

To be fair, he _did_ show up at the very end of the Charlie Chan era, and Charlie Chan movies were being made by a cheap company from 1944 - 1949: Monogram Pictures. It's not all his fault, I can't blame him for the whole lot of it. His performance is a bit disappointing, but it might also be a lack of budget on part of the studio. That little detail where he didn't say _"Excuse, please"_ when going to the cottage door is just... Disappointing, though. But he did say "Thank you so much" when entering the house to "deliver Jade."
