Notes + Summary of video: Types of crimes: Crimes against authority: crime that threatens social structure of society, e.g. deliberately setting fire to a lord's land = a threat to his power, reduce his wealth, threaten social structure Crimes against property: stealing or damaging one's property, e.g. theft, robbery, arson Moral crimes: crimes society sees as indecent behaviour, e.g. sex outside marriage, vagrancy Social crimes: crimes that society deems as unjust, doesn't think it should be a crime, e.g. poaching, forest laws 3 aims of punishment: Retribution: criminal suffers due to the fact they committed a crime, justice system getting revenge on criminal, e.g. an eye for an eye However, retribution isn't always equal, simple crimes, harsh punishments, e.g. Bloody Code in early modern era Deterrence: punishment to stop others committing the crime/ stop criminal recommitting, e.g. repeated offences of vagrancy, branded with a "V" on forehead Rehabilitation: seeks to make criminal a better person, e.g. community service, prison Capital punishment: punishment by death, e.g. hung, drawn and quartered, hanging Corporal punishment: punsihment causing physical harm, e.g. maiming, mutilation Trial by Ordeal: leaving judgement of whether someone is guilty up to God, e.g. trial by hot iron, heals = innocent, infection = guilty Heresy: crime against the church, e.g. not conforming to country's religioin Decriminalise: make something no longer a criminal offence Pardon: let someone get away from crime unpunished (mercy) Penal: anything related to matters of punishment Hate crime: crime motivated by prejudice against someone Collective responsibility: a group of people are all responsible for one another, e.g. Tithings, mundrum fine Hope this was helpful, GOOD LUCK!
