My uncle was telling me stories just the other day back in early 1960s in south Melbourne for example he said the milkman would come around on a horse and cart and deliver your milk in a glass bottle, he said everyone in the neighbourhood would leave their money under the empty bottle on there front yards and it was never stolen not 1 coin, he said people didn't lock there houses then they would leave the house unlocked from morning and come back at night and nothing was taken. Its the way society was back then

I grew up in Sunshine in the 60s and still live in Sunshine. I was a paperboy delivering papers to many places in selling papers outside Massey Ferguson. I also attended Braybrook High as it was called. We all knew where the rough areas were including the train station subway and local pubs. Times have hanged and so have the people. We were raised the hard way but the best. I wouldn’t say it was dangerous but times have changed.

Hi Steven, Thanks for sharing your thoughts & experiences in the western suburbs. It's always great to hear from someone who's been in the same area. I lived in Footscray for about three years, and when I'd mention it to my friends, they'd often raise an eyebrow and ask if it was safe. But honestly, I always felt pretty comfortable in the community. There are usually plenty of people walking around, which gives you a sense of security. I completely agree with your point about avoiding certain places, but I've also noticed that Footscray and its residents have changed for the better over time.

@@MelbWestExploreras someone who also lived in Footscray for 7 years, I too also had people raise their eyebrows as if to ask “how am I still alive?” - yet people don’t realise how much the area has changed from what it was 20 years ago and is continuing to gentrify today - especially where I lived near all the new high rise towers along Hopkins st/Dynon road that have gone up - more young families and couples were and have moved into the area and on weekends you’d see parents with kids down by the Maribyrnong river. Although if we want to give skeptics some merit to their doubts I would say you still witness the occasional drugged up idiot/s strolling around Footscray plaza not to mention some shop fronts along Nicholson, Paisley, and Albert streets looking a little run down but I don’t give these parts long before they too get a facelift. I had no issues living in Footscray. Also regarding the people who raise/d their eyebrows when you or anyone mentions you live /d in Footscray - it makes me wonder if you had told them you live in Collingwood for instance would they react the same way considering every time I go to work in and around Collingwood I see even more druggies and meth heads there than I ever had in Footscray

You're absolutely correct! I appreciate your feedback, and you're right-Casey is a local government area in Melbourne that encompasses 27 suburbs. Thank you for pointing that out, and I'll make sure to be more accurate in my future video titles.

But it's good to know the type of incidents as well. For instance, what if X suburb in the north has 10.000 incidents and Y suburb in the west has 8.000, but of those numbers, only 40% of the incidents in the northern suburbs are serious (let's say break ins, assault, car theft, etc) while the western suburb, 80% of those incidents are serious? So, those numbers can be misleading if we can't have a break down of the data. But good video, anyway. Just find a better AI voice for the next videos.

Used to live in the outer eastern suburbs, not heaps of crime there but heaps and heaps of junkies and eshays, most of which are probably too scared to actually commit crimes

Hi Adam, thanks for your comment. I find it interesting that it's usually the people who don't live in the area that think it's dangerous. But locals usually find it sketchy and rough, but generally okay.

@@MelbWestExplorer half the cast of underbelly were getting around in their Adidas and selling pot,we saw it all but we were just kids keeping Sgt Paul Peppercamp busy at St Alban's police station back then,he was a good cop would rather slap you and drive you home than charge you for being a kid, cops like him don't exist anymore,he was a little corrupt but got the job done, scary bastard too lol. When we pinched some cars from Safeway in St Alban's he got us all a caution as he knew us kids weren't that bad, just bored....he was a solid bloke,I'd buy him a beer for giving us a second chance,so many didn't get that option back then and fell by the way side.

Maybe it has its stereotypes by been a region of immigrants and poor people in general. But in reality the wealthier areas like Port Philipp are the most dangerous ones

Maybe there are immigrants who cause problems but there are Aussie born people who commit crime as well more than the immigrants so you can't fully blame immigrants only
