I'm not surprised that Cronenberg made a movie like this... His mother died of cancer when he was younger, and he had to take care of her until she died... So he literally watched her body turn into nothing... So I always figured he used Body Horror as a way to work through the shit he went through... which is Dope 💯🔥

I saw this film yesterday in a 30 seat theatre that was a little less than half full. I loved this film. There were so many themes that the film brought up. Saul occupying a female role of 'creator', being shrouded as traditional religious woman in a robe and head covering, giving birth....the film essentially asks if 'creating' (his even 'willing') these organs is anything akin to giving birth to a child...it leads into the larger classical questions of Aesthetics- what is art, what is it like, where can we find it, and where it is not?. Saul's partner acting upon him in the masculine role, penetrating his body, being the subject acting upon the object of the art which is him...or is it not also her, as she manipulates the controls attached to her abdomen like a conductor leading an orchestra? I am a trans woman, so maybe my experience fed a lot into what I took out of it, but the film more broadly brought up ideas and questions regarding social mores vs individual expression, bodily autonomy / body art vs. mutilation, and ultimately, is it ethical for governments to patrol our bodies and what we do with them...abortion rights / trans rights, anyone? Loved your review, I looked at about ten others and no one seems to get this movie, at least how I think they could. I loved you guys, I'm subscribed!

Saw this last night in the theater and the crowd I watched it with was startled a lot by it. I think it might make a better SERIES instead of a movie though because there is so much we just gloss over or that is told to us and not shown. Anyway thanks for reviewing it!

I wanted so much more from this movie. Like, I wanted it to either lean into the "sexiness" of it, the body horror of it, or the sci-fi evolution of it. Instead I got like one fifth of each of those.

I feel like I got your point about the damage and scar tissue inconsistencies. It’s like the fact that the healing process seems inconsequential takes away from the potential to explore some of the unfortunate darkness born out of the potential for addictive tendencies within the human condition. Like you just know if humanity actually evolved to this point it would not be an unusual occurrence to see people with missing limbs or no skin left or they’re like succumbing to sepsis and necrosis and their gangrenous flesh has rendered them immobile, but they seem almost blasé about it because they can’t experience the pain that would typically be a consequence of reaching such a state and are just casually cutting off their rancid decay in pursuit of that echo of feeling. And even if the wealthy can afford miraculous restorative medical treatment, there would still be a lower class destroying their bodies seeking pleasure without the means to fix themselves. It seems like a lot was left on the table. I almost would have preferred ditching the new organs and evolutionary philosophy and just purely focus on that idea of a world without sensation-and how far people will go-literally destroying their bodies in pursuit of some semblance of pleasure. And like at what point have you mutilated yourself outside the bounds of what could be considered human? Idk-just spitballing. Love your channel though. I don’t always agree, but your style still feels very conversational like you’re discussing a movie with old friends 💖

22:49 cracks me up 😂 I found this channel after searching for reviews on crimes of the future and I love your interactive analysis immediately I have just watched this film twice fallen in love with it. I wonder if anyone thinks of blade runner, about what human beings are, about oppression and rebellion of a subversive group. The ending scene is like Tensor finally recognizing his identity. It’s open to imaginations what will happen and potential for a sequel. By the way Viggo looks a bit like Rutger Hauer in the film.

It’s over a year later and I am watching it now as I needed something to watch. Virgo Mortensen is so fine to me so I wanted to see what is was about. I thought it was okay. I really liked this movie. It’s definitely got some weirdness but it’s a Cronenberg. Only thing I’m hung up on is the end and Viggo liking plastic even though he was not part of that group…. Like the kid inherited it from his dad, so is is the implication that Viggo is ahead of the curve? If so I believe it😂

Love you both! Just listened to your podcast. The reason why the Depp trial is so important, is you have a person who claims to be a victim, exposed as the actual abuser live on tv. I watched the whole trial as I’m working from home, and Amber Heard is freaking insane. I don’t like people assuming that both parties were abusive, when the evidence did not show that. She is one evil piece of work! ❤️❤️

Honestly i didn’t like how it made me feel. It made me feel terrible and gross. People getting excited over accidents just really bothered me. I knew what it was about but didn’t expect such feelings to pop up. I love Cronenberg, always have. Maybe it’s because i worked in a morgue/mortuary where I saw some of the results of accidents including children and couldn’t understand that. I don’t know. It’s personal. My friend who recommended it, loved it to death.

After listening to him speak, I would not classify any Cronenberg as horror. I loved Crimes of the Future a lot. Unbound by morality, law, or even being human, the evolution of human sexuality and all that entails as it’s become irreversibly tangled within the advancement of technology and post-hyper consumerism And sex is as much for pleasure as procreation The government oversteps into these people’s lives to police what they can and cannot do with them, they repress these people that are just born odd or different I really loved it. Also lends itself to queer readings, Cronenberg himself is very happy queer folks identify with the film, I think it’s great. I hated Crash, I thought it was a really terrible and dull adaptation of a fantastic book. I thought the themes of that novel really got explored much better in Crimes of the Future.

This is really funny to me, because, I watched The Thing John Carpenter 1982) about three times over many years - never 'knowing' what's "body horror!" It was just frighteningly entertaining at the time !LOL! So, now I know the 'genre/label' - it depends. I prefer a straightforward premise that has all the reasons covered, as to the "whys' everything happened, with a conclusion that satisfied! Don't 'like' being 'held hostage' (so to speak :)) to *intentionally disturbing* grotesque plotlines for almost 2 hours! But, I love that you both established that a "secret agency" is behind this story. So, little details could help sway the mind to give it one watch, for Viggo Mortenson? I did like him as Aragorn! :D

A decent review , But I think this is a satire on the OTT makeup Instagram world. Everyone is gorgeous , all shot in amazing locations , all sterile Dubai / Singapore etc. Look at the Greek locations , all crumbling , graffiti ridden decay in this film. You never see that in Sci-fi. The beauty in this film is the internal organs , scars , body modification. But really it's worthy of an hours worth of discussion
