They didn't charge him with rape as the he considered it risky(had doubts if he could get a conviction). They definitely wanted to avoid a prolonged trial, which would hinge primarily on the testimony given by the victims(questions raised about the girls private lives, dating history, character). From cases ive observed, some victims have required intensive therapy after giving their testimonies, since the defence would take quite a hostile approach when questioning. I think the dpp told these girls what to expect if they went down that path, and they've made the collective decision to take the guilty plea for this lesser charge. Obviously it's not ideal, just letting you know these victims would definitely have had some input on this course of action. One thing to note, 32 months for this charge is on the higher end of penalties under the sentencing guidelines, so the judge did do his part.
