I agree that in the U.S. we need to follow the law. But in this particular case, there is strong evidence that this payment was made to hide the story from Trump family. If that is true, then it is NOT breaking the law. It may be a poorly written statute, and it's awful morally, but that's a different issue.

This lawyer is not very bright based on what he says. He clearly doesn't know the law here. Her testimony actually makes the case that there is no crime, because she said that Trump wanted to keep the story from his wife, and that destroys the claim that this was a violation of campaign finance law, (even thought there was no violation of that law to begin with regardless of what the reason given was), because any payments done for personal reasons in not a campaign expenditure, and can't be paid for with campaign money, so this clearly doesn't violate the federal law Bragg wants to claim was violated.

It is still campaign finance violation because Trump paid back Michael Cohen. That money was paid to Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet and not go public. And they tried to do this secretly which makes this a campaign finance violation. If Stormy talks his evangelical supporters may not support a man who had sex with a porn star. I haven't followed the trial so I am giving my answer based on your response but I'm sure the prosecution have other witnesses who can corroborate the hush money issue. This trial is far from over and as I have been hearing it is not looking good for Trump. He should cut a deal.
