In the 1930's they were also experiencing the Great Depression, I think it was all over Europe as well as the United States, there weren't very many jobs during the Great Depression, so the men had to do what they needed to do to survive. Even in the United States, many people had to live in shantytowns called Hoovervilles, not only did the stock market crash in 1929, but they also had the dust bowl, and I'm sure it was the same hard times in Great Britain. It's really sad to see that these men, just wanted to have a job, support their families, but unfortunately during those times, there just weren't enough jobs to go around. There might have been one job and you have 50 or more men fighting for the same position. Also, they didn't have any help from the government either.

It was the same here in Australia in the 1930’s, my grandfather grew up in the inner city of Sydney and it was a slum in those days with high unemployment and crime was rife. It was the time of the razor gangs ruling the streets and many criminals had the tell-tale scar on their face from clashes with rival gangs. There is a series of mugshots of that time that was displayed by the NSW police museum in Sydney and available online. The photos are very striking and in their own way quite artistic.

So many laborers. There were no opportunities for thousands of men who instead had to wreck their bodies digging ditches etc, or else by doing very dangerous work with no safety equipment for little money. And if they didn't do it the next guy would. I believe that being poor at the time led to men who, in better times, would not get into trouble. Not all of them of course - no doubt that some of these guys were career criminals - but I think most of them just wanted to feed their families. There was no welfare, no food stamps, no unemployment benefits, no time or money to go to school and learn a trade, and God forbid if they were injured and couldn't work, well that was just too bad. It must have been rough.

The average height of British WWI recruits was 5' 6". Their officers were usually taller. It was probably childhood nutrition and household/neighborhood hygiene that had the most effect on keeping down height. These men probably came from the 'lower classes,' and thus they would have come from the bottom of the height range.

Some of my ancestors came from this part of Britain and so this video was particularly interesting for my family . However, it looks like they were law-abiding citizens in the 1930’s! Thank goodness. Not since my Grandfather (and his two friends) were "arrested for trying to join up with the army in 1914 they were aged 16, but were told they were too young they were taken home to their parents and told that they were too young to join up. They have been kept in the cells overnight and return to the parents the next day it turned out that they hadn't really been arrested but kept them at the police station as a warning to behave in the cells in the future. They all had shipbuilding apprenticeships so their jobs were necessary for the war effort so they could never join up anyway.

Loved watching the video, as much as I like 19 crimes red wine 🍷 😊 in their description and very much with the height being just over 5 ft and shorter in woman. My attention was with poverty and nutrition during that period, welfare would have been hardly anything, or the parish fund was the church fund and wasn't actual money. Early childhood nutrition and during adolescent is growth period, their diet would have been bland, and probably calcium. My great grandmother was Irish decent, move to Newcastle, later moved on, would have moved from place to place. I know they couldn't find work, as her role in the community sustained her. And the work she food was dreadful. My grandfather could actually read and write which disadvantage him. History lesson 😊

Thank you. It may be tempting to suspect that all poor people were apt to become criminals. Yet none of my Victorian born forebears and their parents and siblings did, although I don't know how the hard work didn't kill them. My paternal side were all around 6 ft as men and my paternal female side around 5'5" for women. My maternal side were all shorties. Even then it was known that once someone had a criminal conviction they had even less chance of honest work. No one would trust working with a known thief even if they only had their lunch that could be stolen. Also no one wanted to chance a thief blaming them for what they themselves had stolen. Thieving from other poor people was considered particularly low behaviour. They were shunned by all but other thieves and fences.

Poor nutrition during childhood was the usual cause back then. People had many children at that time and it was difficult providing for all of them. The same short height can be seen today in poorer nations. North Korea is a good example. Place a North Korean next to a South Korean (or most any Westerner) and the former's height really stands out.
