You guys really should try relay cropping that rye. Lots of guys do it in Washington county ia. Looks like the rye was close to turning anyway. Getting two crops off is better than just one 👍🏽

How was the rye seeded? If you spread it the wind might have made it thicker In those area’s where you had trouble and the rye would spring up. That would probably take more force to crimp those spots. Just wondering

The density of the stand makes a big difference. Thinner stands crimp much less well

The problem is you are going against the natural growth of the plant. You have to see where the plant growing direction is. That's why 1 row is perfect and another is less perfect. Try to do the row that's shitty backwards instead of forward with the tractor or only do the row always in the same direction. Means driving to the starting point always.

Are there hollow strips , like tire ruts, that allow the rye to lay down without being cut?

Could you vertical till the rye to get to lay down or mow the rye?
@6thGenFarmer
@6thGenFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t want to vertical till to kill the soybeans that are coming up. You could mow but crimping leaves a much nicer residue carpet when it works
@williambrooymans
@williambrooymans 3 жыл бұрын
isnt te reason its dry also because the rye takes all the moisture out of the ground?? in The Netherlands some farmers expermented with sowing in rye and crimp it but they all had moisture issues because of the rye taking all the moisture instead of the crop planted in it.

Good music to crimp by. So you are crimping to kill the rye? So beans can grow? If so why not just mow the rye and bale it?
@6thGenFarmer
@6thGenFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. We crimp to create a residue Matt to stop weeds from growing. Baling would work but less residue left on the ground

What’s the idea behind crimping it ?
@6thGenFarmer
@6thGenFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
So in a previous video we planted soybeans into this rye. We crimp it to allow for the soybeans to continue to grow and the crimped rye acts as a great weed barrier

Put water down in front of the crimper so that when the crimper goes over it the water will make the rye heavier and not as dry and it will lay flat better on the field, just a thought🤷‍♂️

Your rye is low seed rate and low nitrogen, that's why is so "elastic".

What is this organic rye business. You do understand that there are 96 elements, some of which have isotopes. Plants have no brains, therefor no knowledge of anything but what of the 96 elements they need to flourish. All elements are "Organist in that they occur in nature but not always as independent elements. So all food, all plants and trees are organic regardless of what you put on the field to help them grow.
@6thGenFarmer
@6thGenFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
I see where you are coming from, but this is certified organic. So even though I agree with you, this particular land has a very closely inspected paper trail to make sure that no chemicals/fertilizers that are not approved are on it. Therefore making it "organic". It is a pain to grow organic but it does bring better prices.

@@6thGenFarmer Hi: Thanks for your reply. Appreciate your taking the time, believe me. Better prices - better profit better farm. May I comment, you are going to school to learn about farming. Great choice since you are a shareholder in your family enterprise. But why the doubt about continuing to Farm. It is you heritage. Would you give up the family farm or put your skills and knowledge to work for the future. The greatest regret of my life was letting our farm go to someone else and watch it be destroyed.
I feel strongly about windmills... Last day soybean harvest
