Guillermo Del Toro brings us a ghost movie....that is actually a Shakespearean-esque love story with minimal ghosts. Jeremy reviews "Crimson Peak"!

This movie is not a ghost story, it's a movie with ghosts in it. It's a metaphor.

In crimson peak the lead character writes a story. The person who reads it says "it's a ghost story" she corrects him by saying "it's a story with ghosts." That's exactly what this movie is.

Honestly I liked this movie. I loved it, actually. Yes it is cliche, and for me even if it isn't scary it is still horror. I would rather watch this, than watch a movie that relies it's horror in gore and "scary-jumps" and a damn super extra cliche ending. I enjoyed this, and to be fair Del Toro said it was more of Gothic Romance than horror. He does not only do horror, he has other good movies like Julia's Eyes which is more of suspense. I guess the horror I like is more poetic, story based and visual than most 12 year olds out here that like movies like "Paranormal Activity." Enjoy being scared by sounds.

What I've learned from watching Schmoes Know, Jeremy Jahns and Chris Stuckmann's channels, is that these people are not film literate. If you knew *anything* about Gothic Romance & Horror literature, Hammer Production's work in the early 60's to late 70's, or Giallo.... Than 'Crimson Peak' wouldn't have just made sense, but would've worked on such a profoundly awesome level. If Mario Bava and Dario Argento had collaborated with Emily Bronte.... and then you took what came from that union and filtered it through 'The Devil's Backbone'; 'Crimson Peak' would have been the result. If you're not familiar with any of that, than don't slam the movie for not being what you wanted it to be: The Conjuring Again. I'm so sick of hearing: it's a ghost movie without the scares/ghosts or a horror movie that isn't about the horror, it's like you fundamentally just miss the point of all of del Toro's work- *H-U-M-A-N-S* are the monsters, and the monsters are innocence.

Your way off here Jeremy,Crimson Peak was excellent.A gothic tragic romance where the twisted humanity is the Monster, not the ghosts,it sounds like you were expecting one thing but got another and was disappointed,Crimson Peak is more unique and vibrant then the usual run of the mill horror flicks,,,I loved it

Yes!! I went in expecting it to be more horror (and I'm just not a fan of modern so-called horror), and I was so not disappointed with what I got instead! I'm still thinking about it, what ghosts haunted Thomas and especially Lucille, and why. And that key ring, such symbolism!

The movie was exactly what it was meant to be, it was meant to be a movie-retelling of a gothic novel, and it captured the feeling of those novels perfectly. normally, i would agree on the points you mentioned, but this movie is meant to be as it is. trust me.

Hi, I’m very late lol. I see what you’re saying here and believe me, I am 100% on your side. But you have to understand that not everyone enjoys the gothic romance style. I used to hate it, mainly because I read Jane Eyre and found it to be pointless and boring, but I adore the genre now and think a lot of people disregard this movie because gothic romance is oddly such a dividing genre.

The ghosts have nothing to do with the plot of this film. That being said at the start of the film the ghosts in Edith's book is labeled as a metaphor. My guess is that these ghosts are a metaphor. A short while after Edith and Dr. Alan are looking at pictures of ghosts. He says that they are there and that when you look back at the picture it's too late. The ghosts are a warning that's too late. Every time a ghost appears it comes from a room or area that has a dark secret. By the time Edith finally gets around to looking at those areas it's too late. She missed her opportunity to see it. Like the people in the picture where too late to see the ghosts until after. Anyway that's what I think of the ghosts in the film.

There is one minor instance where a ghost might have been useful. *SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN THE FILM* In the beginning, when the lead girl is staying home from the dance or whatever, and if her ghost mom hadn't come to her room and scared her (with the intent of warning her to stay away from Tom Hiddleston), she wouldn't have been spooked enough to leave the house with Tom Hiddleston. So her ghost mom was counterproductive and pushed her daughter directly into Tom Hiddleston, which led to them marrying. So I guess a ghost did affect the plot, just in the complete opposite way the ghost intended, and honestly, Tom Hiddleston probably could've found a way to charm her anyway.

doreime You called him Tom Hiddleston from the start till the end of the comment although that’s not the name of the character but from the actor who plays the character you’re referring to all the time. Particularly since starring in 2010's Alice in Wonderland, Mia Wasikowska is a pretty big actress and she'd been getting some pretty big featured roles since at least 2008's Defiance (when i first noticed her), while several people praised her performance in the t.v. show, In Treatment, which was seemingly one of her big breaks, early on in her career, which helped put her on the Hollywood map. She's at least the lead co-star, if not the lead star of this film (Imdb and Wikipedia both list her name before Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston), but i find it very strange that Jeremy didn't even attempt to say her name in this video. He called her,"This girl, that girl, the main girl" etc, even if he didn't know how to pronounce Wasikowska, which even though she was born and grew up in Australia, being a name of Polish origin, the "W's" are pronounced as if they're "V's", but even if didn't know that, he could have easily said her surname as many English speakers do, ignoring the Polish pronunciation and said the "W's" like English "W's", or said, "Mia, i'm sorry, i don't know how to say her last name, so i'm going to call her, Mia W for the rest of the video.", either option would have been better than basically dismissing her, by calling her, "this girl"etc :_ .

I agree, I was hoping the film would be longer and go further than it did, and I wanted much more from the ghosts. But, this movie made me feel things that other horror films have not succeeded in making me feel since The Shining. I thought overall, it was well done and worth seeing in the cinema. I have very few complaints, and it kept me guessing until the end. Also, there are a lot of subtle touches that really brought to my attention the care that was put into to making it.

I guess I get your point but I do believe that ghosts were not the main characters/conflict in the movie. As Mia said it her self as a mirror from her own novel: "It's a story with a ghost in it. Not a ghost story." The ghosts are allusions to regrets and hatreds from the past. I agree that the best performances were taken away by Tom and Jessica but I think Mia and Charlie did ok. I totally agree with the visual part. It was GORGEOUS. Very Del Toro style.

A lot of times, it's not the movie's fault. The marketing team is the one that made the mistake. Sometimes directors have no control over what they do. Even M. Night Shyamalan blames the marketing team for how poorly received the village was for leading people to believe it was a horror movie.

Fair enough. What else does the movie have going for it except for great cinematography and set design. I've seen a lot of pretty piles of crap and a lot of not so amazingly shot masterpieces.

+Darran Kern You can't dogshit a movie for a lying trailer. That is like suspending a kid over a rumor that his friend told that was a lie. It was a failure of marketing that hurts the movie and if anything should raise it a rank out of sympathy.

It is like that cause as he said the movie was marketed as a scary ghost movie. But it wasn't scary & ghosts were pointless anyway so basically a case of the movie getting screwed over by the marketing. Than again it aparently was also boring so meh even if the marketing fit

kaneiah williams Or how The Babadook's trailer made it look like a monster movie, so when people saw it they went "what? That wasn't what I wanted." and that was bad for the movie word of mouth-wise. The list goes on.

KC Nwaneri I didn't mean that it wasn't well received, just that when most people, not critics or anything, saw it after the trailer they complained the monster wasn't in it enough. It was a great movie, though.

I'd give it 3 stars. The movie was nothing like what I was expecting after watching the trailer. I was expecting a horror movie, with scary creatures and a weird love story. They got the weird love story part right, something that sounded strangely like Flowers in the Attic (you know, brother and sister falling in love, locked up in an attic...). The part where all his past wives got killed also reminded me of a tale I was taught at school, "Bluebeard", a french folktale where the guy has had many wives and no one knows what happened to them and then he gets married again and, because he has to leave the country, gives a key to his new girl telling her to never go into that room but she does (well duh) and there they are, all his past wives dead, blood all over the place...(then she gets blood on the damn key and can't wash it off and he finds out she went into the room but I think it all ends well in the end?)... Ring a bell? Maybe Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins got some inspiration from stories such as Flowers in the Attic and Bluebeard and then decided to make this cool halloween mix and throw in some ghosts and romance and redemption and tah dah, Crimson Peak? No? Okay... Anyway. I don't think the ghosts were needed either. Specially her dead mother warning her about Crimson Peak, what was that for? How did she know? Was it me who missed something? Still, I gave it 3 stars because of some amazing acting, Tom Hiddleston was amazing, Mia was fine (needs some improving?), and Jessica Chastain was phenomenal, probably my favourite performance, and I'm not used to see her in these kind of roles (last ones I had seen with her were Interstellar and the Martian). The visuals were also fantastic, the ghosts (even though I didn't like how they weren't needed) were represented beautifully and in a very original way... So yes, 3 stars. It could have been better, it could have been worse.

I don't disagree about your assessment about the ghosts, but that is 100% foreshadowed in one of Edith's first lines. "It's not a ghost story. It's just a story that happens to have ghosts in it. They are a metaphor [...] for the past."

First off, Guillermo Del Toro is my favorite film maker of all time. I want to start my opinion off by saying that to acknowledge my extreme bias here. With that out of the way, I will say that I really enjoyed Crimson Peak. It's hard to contradict any specific points that were made in this review because it's pretty damn true. The marketing for this movie was not good. The story wasn't overly original but that didn't bother me because Del Toro said in interviews that he was trying to make a gothic romance that was reminiscent of old school gothic romance and I think he succeeded at that. That's what I went in wanting to see and I felt like I got that. On top of that, the visuals are simply stunning. It has been said over and over again but I truly believe that no one does visuals like Del Toro. Anyway, I enjoyed the movie more than most (possibly because of my previously addressed bias) but I don't fault anyone who walked away from this one disappointed.

Even though I came into this movie expecting horror, I still wasn't disappointed in the end. Maybe it's because I love any movie that portrays ghosts as not being evil, but completely harmless. It just mirrors my own experiences much more than any phantom dragging some model into a closet does. Maybe it's because the use of color in this movie told as much of the story as the actors did, and movies never really do that. I'm pretty sure these actors were chosen not only based on their acting, but the color of their eyes. The way that the stark yellows contrast against the blacks and greens and blues was just completely breathtaking. And I feel like I was the only one who was actually very frightened during the ghost scenes (though I wish less jumpscares were used, despite how much I think the criticism of jumpscares is pretentious), I think that might just be because I'm a big baby. Overall it's not my favorite movie to come out this year (that was Mad Max Fury Road), but it's up there.

In the beginning of the movie Jessica Chastains character talks about the "Ghoststory" she has written and she says: Its not a ghoststory, its a story with a ghost in it, the ghost is a symbol of the past. And thats exactly how the ghosts are used in the movie. they are an echo and a warning. The movie starts with a book called "Crimson Peak" being opened and at the end the book is being closed and you can see that the book was written by Jessica Chastains character. The movie is a visualisation of a book the main characters wrote.

I actually enjoyed this movie a great deal. I agree that the marketing team did a poor job in representing this movie the way it should have, but I found it still to be a good "horror" movie. I think if this movie were marketed as a romance gone wrong and came out in any other month but October it would have been welcomed with open arms, but the marketing as well as the general public's need for horror to be overly scary or gory instead of just spooky or creepy killed this film.

yes, but the ghosts are - like Ediths says about her ghost story -a METAPHOR that stands for the past, and like in her book it’s not a ghost story but a story in which a ghost appears etc. And when interviewed Guillermo del Toro explained that the crimson peak ghosts aren’t evil or “terrorizing” the main character but helping her etc.
