15:42 “Why is it possible?” I’m not the best at explaining it but the gist is that you’re singing 2 notes at the same time at a 2:3 ratio to each other (A 440hz and E 660hz for example) which creates an auditory illusion of you singing an octave lower than your fundamental note.

What happens in a subharmonic, is that you are actually singing a vocal fry at the same time as a chest note. If the vocal folds are vibrating at 98hz (G2), then you relax the vocal tract to activate the false folds as you would a fry technique, and they vibrate at about half the frequency (49hz, G1) which essentially creates the octave you hear in the subharmonic sound. Very rough explanation.

I’ve been learning these for a while now, I personally have sung down to a C#1 in this technique (I’m only 14 so that’s kinda funny) and I think it is the most impressive and cleanest sounding bass technique existing. I’m also somewhat obsessed with bass singing so… yeah. 15:42 “Why is it possible?” So, what subharmonics basically are, is singing a fry note at the same time as a chest note. I assume you know what a fry note is, but either way, a fry note is really just an unsupported buzzing of your vocal cords. I don’t know a _lot_ about the physiology, but I believe with the chest note, you activate the false vocal folds to vibrate at about half the frequency, which essentially halves the frequency (thus lowering the octave) escaping from the vocal tract which results in the octave that you hear in the subharmonic sound. As an example, with that G1 you attempted, if you were to sing that G2 and go into the G1 subharmonic, an easy way to do it is to relax the vocal tract and play around with the “breath pressure” until you have the subharmonic. It will be easy to tell when you hit one. But anyway, with the G2, a typical well pitched G2 will vibrate in the vocal cords at about 98hz, and a G1 in any technique will vibrate at around 49hz. So you would relax the vocal tract to reach the subharmonic G1 at about half the frequency of the “fundamental note,” that’s actually the term for it. If you end up seeing this, how have you been progressing in your subharmonics? I personally took a while to get the technique consistent and to do it on command, and my comfortable sub range daily only goes from F1 to G#1 (as I am currently just a baritone, my voice hasn’t done the funny puberty drop yet lol, or at least the crazy big one).
