The Captain was arrested because he attempted to arrest the XO to circumvent the 2-man protocol and launch the missiles. If the XO attempted to launch the missiles without the captain, the XO would be arrested for the same thing. It's not about who has authority over the other, it's about the violation of the 2-man protocol.
@elzar7602 жыл бұрын
yeah. The whole thing depends on everyone, especially Cobb in this scenario, making the right decision about who was right and who was wrong in following the rules. Since the captain, even if you think he was right in his reasoning, was wrong about the rules (IE you can’t launch without both peoples consent), he was arrested when Cobb decided he wasn’t following the rules.

Yeah. And there was also the matter of the Captain putting a gun to the two men's heads and threatening to blow their brains out. I doubt that is covered under the procedures either.

In the real world, once they are back at home port, the captain would be charged with violating protocol and the XO and crew would all be charged with mutiny. The captain would lose his command and be demoted. The XO and crew would then go to prison.
@namechamps2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinerose Nonsense. The captain doesn't have unlimited authority. Captains can be relieved of duty and relieved of duty by the XO. Absolutely nothing would have happened to the XO. He was 100% right. Even if he had been wrong about the message he was still right. The Captain can not launch unless the XO agrees. Period. The captain can't replace him either. The two man rule exists to ensure no one man can launch nuclear weapons. It exists everywhere. That is why two people authenticated the message, why missile silos have two operators, any maintenance work on nuclear weapons must always involve at least two people.

The 1st officer should have agreed with the captain, put the XO in lock-up, and then refuse to follow the captain's order to launch. Then the 1st officer should have told the captain to go reconcile with the XO because they were both right.

Something similar happened during the cuban missile crisis when Soviet subs attempted to cross the US quarantine line. The US started dropping signaling depth charges to get the sub to surface for identification. The Soviet commanders thought they were under attack and the Captain and political officer agreed to launch a tactical nuclear torpedo. But a person on board; the Chief of staff of the flotilla, had to agree to the launch. The vote was 2/3 and there was arguing but ultimately they didn't launch the nuke and surfaced. They could have accidentally started WWIII but was stopped thanks to Vasily Arkhipov

I would imagine Ramsay's retirement was slightly forced considering two things he did on the sub that were beyond the mutiny situation. 1) He put a gun to two men's heads and threatened to kill them. That is a court martial offense that would result in jail time. 2) He hit his EX TWICE demanding a missile launch key. Also a court martial offense. That one he probably could have slipped from. So he was probably, quietly told to retire or face court martial.
@paulfeist2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, except that not only would it be more than "slightly forced", no one on that submarine would ever put to sea in a submarine again. No one higher than Chief Petty Officer, anyway. The Captain would most likely be thrown out of the Navy, without pension or retirement. He'd be VERY lucky to be allowed to retire.

It's funny. I've had this argument with a military brother. He sided with the captain, I sided with the XO. Here's the facts...The rules of engagement prevent a captain of a nuclear submarine from launching missiles unless the 2nd in command repeat and agree to those orders...PERIOD. XO is right, captain is wrong. Any other debate is a moot point because it doesn't change the initial fact. Even if not launching allowed the Russians to hit American soil with a preemptive nuclear strike it doesn't change the simple fact that one of the XOs responsibilities is to confirm the captains orders and he not only has the right but the responsibility to refuse based on superior officers decisions that outrank his own captain. When he makes the decision to not follow his captains orders, he's doing it because he's choosing to follow the orders of superior officers that outrank his own captain.

Slightly more specifically, it’s an illegal order to try to launch without the active agreement of the XO (as is trying to subvert the system by the XO’s arrest for acting totally within his responsibilities). In theory officers (and enlisted) are expected to disobey illegal orders or they will be held also responsible for the same illegal thing happening. That said, of course, it’s super gray in reality and more risk in standing up to disobey an order since it takes a lot for an order to be considered illegal and any judgement would come much later so it puts a LOT of responsibility on some very young people to risk themselves/their careers and the whole system relies on them making the right choices.
@jeffburnham66112 жыл бұрын
He doesn't need the XO's agreement. The EAM ((Emergency Action Message) had already been verified. The 2nd one was incomplete so protocol disregards it. Hunter broke protocol by trying to establish contact to get the entire message.

@@jeffburnham6611 He did need the XO to concur. The captain cant just circumvent the requirement that the XO to agree with him. Hence why it was a two step authorization. If the CO could launch without the XO it defeats the purpose of the rule. They received a Emergency Action Message and the CO agreed that it needed to be read, hence why he launched the radio buoy. The only reason why they didnt read it and the message was incomplete is because of the battle with the other sub. If the CO didnt think the Emergency message was necessary he would have just ignored it and went along to fire the missles.

The XO was the correct person. Yes, they received an authentic order for launch but the final failsafe is the 2-man protocol who for whatever reasons can choose not to launch. The unknown 2nd order was enough reason to withhold the attack. The Captain was wrong to try to arrest the XO to circumvent the protocol. The Captain was wrong to instigate a mutiny. The XO was correct to be cautious about the attack and to bring the ship back to order by counter-mutiny.

There was so many good arguments. My favorite was the XO's where he said "For all we know the target may be different now." Meaning, "Yes, if confirmed to launch let's do it. But if we hit the wrong place, it pointless and we lose." Each man had their valid points. It was a clash of egos. The XO finally had enough of his authority and rank not being respected. And the Captain did not like to have his power diminished in front of the others.
@TheeYellowDart2 жыл бұрын
The XO has to concur with the launch authority. The Captain cannot simply relieve the XO if he doesn't agree. The act of following the orders in hand makes sense, but it's not that Hunter is unwilling to launch; he's unwilling to do so without first confirming what the cut off EAM regarding nuclear launch is. The order to release nuclear weapons isn't a generic or routine event. Each Trident missile can carry several nuclear warheads whose nuclear yield is several times more powerful than the bombs that flattened Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is an incredible responsibility, one that can't be taken lightly, flippantly or when there is doubt.
@RocketSurgn_2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and the whole reason the two man rule for nuclear weapons exists. Blindly following orders would totally invalidate it. The point is that it is much better to risk one or a few (of the many!) launch platforms for nuclear weapons to not launch immediately even if it was real because of ambiguity like exactly this situation vs launching when it shouldn’t happen and causing a basically irreversible nuclear exchange killing hundreds of millions+.

Nuclear submarines make oxygen from seawater through electrolysis and release carbon dioxide. It's harder on spaceships. Smartly diving means that the submarine will dive properly by the book. A change in a direction in a submarine is tricky, because if it isn't executed properly there will be cavitation, which means air bubbles will form from the screws, creating a lot of noise. Noise is the primary means by which a submarine would be detected.

"That was pathetic." Yes, both officers were awful. Senior officers should never disagree in front of subordinates as it undermines all authority on the ship. What should have happened was a private meeting the moment the XO disagreed with the launch orders. They had time then. They should have come up with a course of action in private they could both agree upon in front of their subordinates so they were not undermining each other. In reality this should have happened before they left port. Both knew the myriad possibilities surrounding a launch order and should have gone over these until they both understood each other. We're talking about a one or two hour long conversation. I place this wholly on the CO wanting to act as ultimate authority in a launch situation, which is not how launch situations work, and with equal blame on the XO for not suggesting the conversation be held.

It took a few moments to focus on what got their attention. Quietly, slowly, leaving almost no wake, was the black 'sail' of an attack submarine. Just the sail, mind you. It pulled off to the opposite side of the bay, and docked. A short while later an announcement came over the ship's coms, that the sub was open, if anyone would like to go aboard and check it out. Seriously....I have never seen anything in my life as evil looking as that black conning tower slowly creeping by.

Another intense and somewhat prophetic Denzel movie is 'The Siege".

If you haven't seen it, watch Das Boot, probably the best submarine movie ever made. Must watch the German version with subtitles though.

21:12 Re. _"This is not the time to be like having your own internal submarine war,"_ on the contrary, since they're filming a movie anyway, it's the perfect time. :-)

27:33 "Give me the missile key, Mr. Hunter." Always loved that quote, still get chills during that scene especially. Great reaction, guys, loved it. Classic film IMHO. Hope you'll react to his other films like Enemy of the State, Man on Fire, True Romance, The Last Boy Scout, Deja Vu, Unstoppable etc. I think you'll love those. R.I.P. Tony Scott & James Gandolfini

22:50 "You remember when the Klingons were gonna blow up the _Enterprise_ and Captain Kirk calls down to Scotty and says, 'Scotty, I gotta have more power?'" 😄 I ask this question as a _Star Trek_ fan. Would it be possible for Commander Hunter to be _more_ specific?

One of my very best friends was an XO on a fast attack submarine. So that's a sub that goes out and tracks enemy subs and observes what they do during peacetime. He told me that of all the military submarine movies, this one is by far the very best. All those messages are all handled that way.. One thing they really didn't explore in this movie is officer and/or enlisted and who's expected to do what and when.

Love this movie, part of home video library collection. Lt Commander Hunter, the executive officer, played it by the book and had every right to have Cpt arrested.

Every submarine crew has at least one particularly large member. Works as ballast and an emergency floatation device.

In high-school In 1997 half the class watched A Few Good Men and the other Crimson Tide and we had to debate on the ethics of the 2 movies. (I was on AFGM watching side)

1. Galley 2. Nuclear subs can extract oxygen from seawater through their hull's for air 3. They have other radios but can't use them at depth 4. Not "Hail Mary's", "Eternal Father strong to save" 5. If the weps officer died they could burn into the safe with welding gear, all ships will have some. I wouldn't worry about hull breach, this isn't an airliner but richochet?

First, I think something went wrong higher up when they put someone like _Ramsey_ in command of a _sub._ There _are_ Naval vessels that will benefit from a CO like that, but _not_ subs. He's _way_ too hard-charged. You put a hardcore, discipline type like that in a sealed, metal tube, underwater, for weeks or months at a time, and of course, you have people _snapping_ because they can't _take_ it. Second, I think Ramsey made a mistake when he recruited someone from _outside_ his chain of command to be his XO. But then I've explained this elsewhere. But third, I think Ramsey made a mistake when he went _against_ Hunter in presuming to order Hunter to repeat an order that he did not _agree_ with. That demonstrated neglect of _protocol;_ protocol that exists for a _reason_ which made it kind of _ironic_ when Ramsey then tried to _rely_ on protocol to _protect_ his position. The latest order they had been able to _confirm_ ordered them to finish the launch, but they had _begun_ to receive _another_ order that complications had _prevented_ them from receiving enough of to _verify._ What was in _that_ order? They had no way to _know._ Now let's just assume, for the sake of argument, that it was _not_ an order to cancel the launch. It might've been an order to launch on a different _location._ If they had launched on their _original_ target, that target might have suddenly become benign which would've been a _horribly_ offensive target to hit, but would've left their supply of missiles exhausted, and unavailable for this _new_ target which is suddenly a _threat._ This would've put it in Captain _Ramsey's_ best interests to retrieve the order as _well._

Great reaction. "I'm exhausted" is what the film makers wanted...As far as the "right or wrong" of the movie, it was all about the 2 man rule. Ramsey couldn't just replace Hunter for the specific purpose to launch nuclear weapons. He made it very clear why he was relieving Hunter and the COB and all the other senior officers knew it.
