So this is loosely related to an incident that occurred on a Russian sub during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Russian sub was being pursued by US ships and due to both damage and the depths they were at while hiding they were out of contact with both Russia and pretty much the rest of the world for a few days. The captain of that sub and the Soviet political officers assumed that war had broken out due to the Cuban Missile Crisis and wanted to launch their weapons at US ships. The XO on the ship didn't and wanted to surface to re-establish contact. Thankfully they needed all 3 officers to agree to launch and ended up surfacing prior to anything really happening.

Yes this is true. Similar type of thing happened in the 80's. Soviet system detected a launch of several missiles from the US. The commander decided not to send the information up the chain of command who would have instantly called for a strike against the US as was their protocol.

I think the movie made the point that Ramsey & Hunter genuinely like each other outside of the sub. But underwater, their perceptions of each other started to sour after Hunter said that "the enemy is war itself" and later on when Ramsey ran a drill immediately after the kitchen fire. This is one of those intense "acting duel" films like Heat or Face/Off where two legendary actors go toe-to-toe and it's difficult to say who had the better performance. Definitely go through more of Tony Scott's filmography: Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Enemy of the State, Spy Game, etc... Also, this is Hans Zimmer's best score, imo.

That was also one of his best. One that I think the two of you would absolutely love is SPY GAME from 2001, starring Brad Pitt and Robert Redford. Looking forward to your next reactions. Side note, for your Stallone series, 1989's LOCK UP has one of Sly's best performances, as well as a film he did in 2000 where he plays a gangster out to avenge his brother's death, called GET CARTER. That Dinner scene with all of the officers might be one of my Top 5 favorite scenes in a blockbuster movie. You get some good characterization for all of the supporting characters, but the interaction between Denzel and Gene is top notch. I love the setup that Ramsey was someone who only needed to "know how to push the button ... they'll tell me when." It makes sense that once he's given the go-ahead to launch, he gets tunnel vision. Pushing that button and carrying out his orders is the only thing that matters. Hunter, on the other hand, is someone who wants to know the "why" of a situation. He's constantly evaluating the situation and looking at the big picture on the consequences of their actions/non-actions. It really establishes the unstoppable force/immovable object dynamic that carries through the rest of the film. Also, I'll never forget the line, "In the Nuclear World ... the true enemy is war itself." It's a mark of a good thriller when a movie can have some pretty memorable action scenes, yet the scene that sticks out most to me is a bunch of guys talking at a Dinner table.

The thing I love about this movie is that Ramsey is fighting to save 50,000,000+ people and Hunter is fighting to make sure they don't accidentally kill 500,000,000+ people. When Ramsey is holding a gun to the seaman's head, he is doing it to save Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, etc. Really, how far is too far with stakes that high? Also, I love the look on Ramsey's face when he's pointing the gun at one person is so much more pained than when he's pulling the trigger to launch nukes.

The dynamic between Hackman and Washington is amazing. I always wanted to see these two in an alternet universe doing A Few Good Men to see what that would look like. Hackman would've made a very terrifying Jessup. For his effort, Washington would make a wonderful Kaffee, although with less of the playfulness Cruise brought to the role. If you want to see a very good, but underrated film, where James Gandolfini stars in an authoritarian role, check out The Last Castle, where he stars opposite Robert Redford as a military prison warden.

Interesting you mention that. While Jessup crossed the line in terms of lying and the cover up his tough treatment of the men is the way you build toughness. I never saw anything that made me think that he knew the young guy had a heart problem. Except for the lying/cover up I saw both sides as being someone equal tragic as it was. I could have never handled a guy like Jessup as I question too much but having someone like that stand watch and train men they way he does is effective.

I served in the Navy during the mid 1980's, and I was part of the damage control team on my ship. and though i didn't serve on a submarine, during situations a lot of information is passed through the chain of command that would make your head spin. For certain situations, I was positioned in Damage Control Central where the Chief Engineer and other officers and enlisted kept updated information regarding any damage to the ship and how that damage is being taken care of. then that information is passed on to the CO in CIC, where ALL information is readily available to the CO on any tactical situation outside the ship as well as inside the ship. that's why our sailors have to be well trained to do their jobs. and submarines are even more so, as they are in a submerged, pressurized metal container, hundreds of feet below the surface of the ocean!

Tony Scott some say, did not commit suicide. He was "convinced" to leave the bridge where the river was far below him. "Enemy of the State" produced some enemies who chose to catch up with him and stop him from the making public information that presented itself to him. Information that certain Federal agencies didn't was exposed. Conspiracy theory? Indeed. Research it. Just because something is a conspiracy, doesn't mean it's hogwash - Watergate was a conspiracy theory before we knew it really was a conspiracy. Tony Scott, sadly, became of interest to elements of our government, because he was digging deeper into issues of corruption at the level of the entire World Stage. Some say, these elements simply deleted his sleuthing by deleting him.

Quentin Tarantino did some work on the screenplay... polishing some of the dialogue as a favor to Tony Scott. Tarantino added some bits of his own: including the Silver Surfer bit and the discussion about the horses.

The amazing part for me was always that in theory, both of them were in the right. And, from what I understand of military law and structure, Gene Hackman's character could not be blamed if he launched. For me, that makes the movie so much better. It's a struggle between two right. One is following the chain of command, the other is following your moral compass and common sense

Interesting thing about the main car chase sequence in that film, the commentary (I think the director, forget offhand) says they didn't tell the city authorities quite exactly what they were planning to do, as they thought permission would not have been granted, because it was a tad dangerous. One cool fact, the way they get the emergency action message is from two buried cables in northern Michigan and Wisconsin called the ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) array. The cables send a signal which is then amplified by the granite rocks in the area and it can send a signal to a sub underwater anywhere on the planet.

This is one of my favorites, a great film where there isn't really a villian, just competing beliefs, both parties believing they're right. I recommend The Rock from 1996, similar feeling to this film, except a lot more action. And if you guys like Denzel, STRONGLY recommend Training Day (2001) and Flight (2012)

I was never on a sub (3 ships of 3 classes though), but I had to laugh at some of the really "serious" scenes in this move that were just way over the top. For better or worse, sailors don't take themselves nearly as seriously as portrayed. There's professionalism, but people still joke and screw around to let off steam. Every sailor I've heard who was on a sub has said Down Periscope is the most realistic sub movie they've seen. Even people with a stick up their ass don't usually go around yelling at subordinates.

Actual submariner here who was serving on active duty (fast boats, not ballistic missile subs) at the time this movie was released. We were told by our command we were not to discuss any technical aspects of this film should anyone ask. Some behind the scenes stuff that isn't discussing classified knowledge: - The crew’s briefing and entry onto the boat was filmed on the former USS Barbel (SS-580), a decommissioned diesel-powered sub awaiting disposal. The film crew built the submarine’s large sail and part of the missile deck to make it look like an SSBN. - The submarine submerging at the beginning of the film is the real USS Alabama (SSBN-731). The Navy did not give permission for the sub to be filmed submerging, but the film crew learned Alabama was in port in Pearl Harbor and stalked the exit of the harbor until the boat emerged and went under. The previous scene of a submarine on the surface was a completely different class of boat, a Los Angeles class fast attack. You can easily see it is missing the fairwater planes the SSBNs all have. - Galley fires are one of the most common and dangerous casualties a submarine can suffer and often will start in the deep fat fryer. This is one of the most common drills run aboard a submarine at sea. - The purpose of a torpedo - especially in submarine warfare - is not to hit the target directly, but to detonate the warhead within a certain distance from the hull in the hopes the pressure wave will damage or breech the hull. The best place to detonate a torpedo is actually directly under the keel of the opposing vessel. While there are numerous things this movie got right, there are also many, MANY things this movie got wrong. (One of the main reasons the Navy did not cooperate in the making of this film.) Watch this with a room-full of submariners and they will tear this film apart like an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

This movie does take a lot of detail to get a lot of things right, as someone who has served in the Navy. However, its a movie, so of course they take a few liberties to make it less believable. One- there would be no dog on the ship. Two- an officer cannot make an enlisted drop and do pushups unless you are in boot camp. Three- this scenario between the captain and the XO would never happen in real life. They might not like each other, but there would be far more courteous than this. This is also part of military code that is called conduct unbecoming of an officer. If leadership is squabbling in open in front of the men, then it would cause a big deal as far as leadership.
@conker206
@conker206 2 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree a little about this not happening in real life. Full disclaimer I’ve never been in the military so I don’t know. You said that they might not like each other but would be far more courteous than this. At the very start the xo was very calm and courteous to the captain and vice versa. However the captain had already made up his mind no matter what and was not going to listen to the xo any further. At that point it became heated. The xo realized he couldn’t negotiate anymore and with nuclear war on the line things had to happen the way they did.

While it was a great movie with an awesome story and characters, they got just about everything wrong with the sub stuff... haha. Though quite a bit of the equipment used was correct, everything dealing with procedures was way off. A fun story that was told to me by some of the older sub guys that were in when this movie came out.. A bunch of the anti-nuclear groups picketed outside a few of the sub base's main gates for protests. Apparently quite a few people took the movie to heart and viewed submariners as psychotic murderers with itchy trigger fingers that had access to world ending bombs. They could just go crazy at any time and kill everyone, haha.
@promontorium
@promontorium 2 жыл бұрын
@@danwood4171 You just never see this kind of bullshit back and forth. A CO or XO is going to have been an officer for many years, probably 10-15 years in at least. That is their life. It's not part time, it's THEIR LIFE. They've had to deal with people they hate. They've had an entire career in a tiny tube crammed with other people. They've learned how to maintain absolute decorum. It's not that people wouldn't disagree, it just wouldn't be constantly boiling over with bickering etc. The conduct and character of the captain is not someone who would stay a captain for long. He rubs everyone wrong, he pisses off his crew, he makes people uncomfortable, etc. He can say all he wants about how it's about readiness but the admirals shit can captains that make their commands miserable. The captain was a prick to his new XO from minute one. See you might see it as Training Day with Denzel in the reverse role, but an XO isn't a rookie and doesn't need the captain to train him. Any officer chosen to be an XO already has many years of leadership experience. The captain doesn't have to evaluate or train him. The CO is going to see an XO as his primary ally, not enemy. That's why the XO is called a "first mate" or in Star Trek "Number 1". A CO will look to rely on the XO, not be a dick to him and set him straight about how he thinks the Navy should be run.
@promontorium
@promontorium 2 жыл бұрын
@@conker206 But that's precisely why it's not realistic. You won't ever see a CO be a total prick to his XO from minute one like this. It makes no sense. This movie portrayed it like it's the captain versus the XO, but in reality the captain relies on the XO for everything. The captain sees the XO as their "first mate" their "number one". A captain who was on everyone's ass like this 24/7 would lose their job. While you could imagine them going at it as they did eventually, the part that's unrealistic is that it would ever boil over to that point in the first place. These are officers who've spent 1/3 to 1/2 or more of their life in charge of people doing this exact job every day of every year. This kind of bickering would be squashed a decade before they got near those positions. This movie also made it seem like the XO had to be trained by the CO, but that's nonsense. An XO would have had to have many years as a division officer and department head learning all the work of an XO long before promotion to the position. That's generally how the Navy works, you learn the job of the person above you before you get promoted. That's especially true for officers because their promotion in rank is usually directly tied to a promotion in position.
