Fun fact! This is the actual description of the theory “death of the author” - people take death of the author to be literal and use it to excuse or pretend a bad author doesn’t exist but “death of the author” means only what you said - it’s less to do with the author and about how the original artistic intentions of the creator have no superior standing or priority over an audience’s alternate/different interpretations. So folks, remember that, because that theory isn’t mutually exclusive with doing boycotts on certain authors if the material or publicity profit will be directly giving more influence and visibility to someone’s bigoted and harmful views and endeavors. Yes one can still enjoy a piece of media, but let’s not pretend shitty authors “don’t exist” simply because people take the words “death of the author” literally when it means something more complex

the song that comes to my mind is christmas kids by roar. it's about how ronnie spector's husband didn't let his wife leave the house and did a lot of other messed up things because he was so obsessed with her. he also found a way to adopt twins as a christmas present to her, also conforming them to the house. needless to say it's super dark yet tiktok just takes it like it's a song about moving on. it is, but, i'd be respectful enough to use a song that wasn't about someone taken advantage of this harshly.

Another example of this is Juilet by Cavetown. Juilet is not a love song. In the song, Robbie is singing to his younger self pre transition. Since Cavetown is trans himself. "I hope that she looks and me, and thinks shit hes so pretty" is about him hoping his younger self would like who he is now. Juilet isnt a person, shes him.

i think the most egregious example of this is FKA twigs's song "cellophane." the lyrics "didn't i do it for you?" eventually turning into a massively viral meme. even though the story behind the song was her experience dating robert pattinson, and the incessant and vile hatred she received from racist fans. her trauma and her heart and soul were poured into that song but it's primarily known for the miss piggy cover. it seems that every week there's a trending sound that either mocks, disrespects, or fetishizes, black women (sometimes all at once). this is definitely way beyond the scope of what was covered in this video, but it's important to know every side. either way this was a great video, and the cameo from bambi was too cute :3 🧡💚💜

i feel this way with so many mitski songs, specifically Class of 2013. in case you weren’t aware, mitski has a good relationship with her mom. the song is about not wanting to move out of your mother’s house after graduating, which is obvious because of the title and several of the lyrics. the song is NOT about wanting your abusive or neglectful mother to care for you. it’s her begging her mom to let her stay in her house and take care of her like a child again because she is scared of growing up and being alone. i’m baffled that it got so misconstrued despite how obvious the themes are in the song. “mom, is it alright if i stay for a year or two?” she wants to stay living with her mom before she goes on her own. “i’ll leave once i’ve figured out how to pay for my own life too” again, she’s scared of being an adult on her own and just wants to figure things out. “mom, am i still young? can i dream for a few months more?” asking if you’re still young is like a telltale sign that you’re scared to grow up. she wants to dream for a few months more since she’s now an adult and dreaming is considered to be for only children. once one person used this song to talk about their abusive/neglectful mother, everyone just assumed that’s what the song was about and so they never bothered to look at it differently. and it makes me sad because although any interpretation of music is valid, nobody knows what this song is actually about and i feel like i can’t really talk about it without running the risk of people getting upset or thinking i’m wrong. it kinda makes it like i can’t ever see a video of someone talking about why they relate to it and leave a comment saying that i relate because of a different reason. i wish more people knew of the actual meaning behind the song, more people might be able to relate to it if they did.
@floorcollapsing Жыл бұрын
You sound like such a crybaby right now "of course interpretations are valid" well obviously you don't think that because you wrote a paragraph saying that the original meaning is the right one. Another song that reminds me of this is Rhinestone Eyes by Gorillaz. I’m a HUGE Gorillaz fan and my love grew so much more for the band in 2020, my fav album is plastic beach which Rhinestone Eyes came from. Gorillaz songs are usually about rlly dark things and plastic beach specifically surrounds the growth of society, government, and pollution, Rhinestone Eyes specifically being about pollution and the view of a working class person not being able to do much about it to the point where this person considers it a part of life and society, but people changed that concept and oddly interpreted it as a toxic relationship and there was a small trend in 2021 where people put the lyrics as “that’s sick sick sick sick” instead of “that’s electric-tric-tric..”, and that’s just one of the songs by gorillaz that have been heavily misused, people would also use Ascension from the humanz album which is about racism and it’s flat out infront of you about what it’s about too unlike rhinestone eyes which I can understand people to not see the real definition of.

@@wellheck1377It has always been okay and always will be. Art is just as much about the interpretation of the listener as it is the intent of the creator, and reinterpreting a song with a different context, even a much less serious one, is valid as long as certain lines are not crossed (for example misrepresenting the lyrics with malicious intent). Trends like these are annoying, and do somewhat disrespect the song (though I’d argue most if not all types of song related trends do that to an extent. They make it less about the song, more about the trend) but ultimately it’s just people enjoying a song how they choose to enjoy it. If that ends up being not engaging with the original meaning and just liking the song within the context of the trend, so be it. The teens of TikTok can enjoy music that way if they really want, though personally I don’t see the appeal.

i understand both sides of the argument too. some songs are extremely personal and meaningful and to both the artist and the listeners and it can be uncomfortable or hurtful to see the song being trivialized on tiktok. but at same time, once you put your art out into the world it becomes many different things to many different people. everyone will have their own interpretation and put their own feelings and meaning into your art regardless of your original intention. a lot of famous paintings have a depressing or disturbing backstory or were created as a result of a mental or physical illness. and yet, that art is commercialized and put on tote bags and shirts and keychains etc. and people pose for photos in museums next to that artwork. it’s actually weird when you think about it but it’s become a normal part of our society. and also, this is happening on tiktok and i just can’t put that much energy into getting mad about the stuff that happens on there. there are truly harmful and disgusting things on tiktok and that’s what i’m more concerned about. i actually think it’s cool when you can take the lyrics of a song and recontextualize it in a clever or creative way. i do that all the time in my head anyway.
@C0C0N0T Жыл бұрын
Authors get repeatedly told that once their work is out there, its out of their hands. Whatever intentions they had with the characters won't matter, because the reader could read it as something else. Paintings too, a thousand people can have a thousand different opinions on the same piece. Classical music gets this treatment too. I think its a bit odd that other genres of music SHOULDN'T get the same treatment. Paintings and written words can be just as painful and vulnerable as lyrics, but its still not wholly theirs when its out in the world

I don't think anyone said a specific genre of music should be the only category of art that is left untouched... we can know something to be true and say that shit sucks ass sometimes.

I think the most aggreguous examples are when people take songs that have these intricate heavy meanings and simplify them into a song about something petty like missing your ex. There are SO many good songs already that are explicitly about those experiences, but people use snippets from songs that are about grief, abuse, ect. to convey their feelings about something way less drastic by comparison. I pretty much agree that art will always be reinterpreted, but i understand the frustration when an artist is trying to tell a specific story and that message gets lost bc tiktok kids just want a sound they can use to cry about their dating life and then so many listen to songs that are about victims of terrible things, but make it about themselves and their mundane problems. Reminds me of when straight couples started using girl in red songs for their tiktoks, songs written by a lesbian about being a lesbian but they just had to make it about them for some reason :/

i just lost my grandma to dementia and hearing that line now hurts. the trend is super cringe, but it’s whatever. i definitely remember a time when i’d isolate a single line from a serious song and relate it to something trivial because i didn’t know what those bigger feelings were yet.

This happens to all art forms. Not everyone is going to know the context of every piece of work (most don’t!) So while I can appreciate knowing about the artist, their thought process, the time period it was made in, etc. the interpretation will always be on the viewer/listener. I think people engaging and having their own thoughts about different art is what makes it great. 🎶

As a gen x person I feel this way about the song Fast Car by Tracey Chapman. A white male country star remade it. What?? It's about the struggle of a poor black woman! What a way to just ignore the message of the song and act like it's just a catchy tune.
@sumlem Жыл бұрын
It was a cover and Tracy Chapman is actually fine with it according to a statement she made. I do agree that the context of the song is lost on new listeners.

@@sumlem You can't discredit my opinion because I have always had an emotional connection with that song. It's beautiful and tragic. I was 14 when it came out and it's like an old friend. @@CallmeMelinanow too bad it doesn't compute to you (which is fine), but it does to others (which is also fine). And is this line of reasoning exclusive to 'Fast Car', or do all covers need to conform to a certain set of rules in order to be OK?

@@bartelvandervelden9894 I believe this video is about songs that may have a deeper meaning to someone, and are then used in a more lighthearted way that seems odd to the listener. It's honestly so weird to feel close to a song, to have a deep understanding of the artist's intentions, and then to see it repurposed on tiktok. Most of the time I'm just happy to hear a song I like, but sometimes I sit there like "woah" because it really reminds me that we all live different lives. Songs that they feel touched by could be songs I've never heard before. I didn't listen to any Mitski before my brother sent me a playlist of his favourite songs. He didn't listen to certain musicians before I recommended them to him. We would discuss how the song felt to each of us, we'd tell each other the intention. It's really just.. While the songs are close to my heart, I find the trend for that song fun bc most of the people using it are fans of the genre and are having fun with their friends. The Addison Rae situation reminds me of what happened with “All You Wanna Do” from SIX the Musical. A portion of the song that mentions “taking a break from boys” was used as a trend for women who either realized they weren’t straight or found a decent guy to be with. The issue was that the song chronicles the SA and exploitation that Katherine Howard faced throughout her life. It’s literally about her being viewed solely as a sex object for men’s pleasure from the time she was a minor until her death at 18. It was obvious that the people participating in the trend weren’t aware what the song was about, but watching those videos was still an uncomfortable experience for fans who knew the song and it’s meaning.

@sumlem Жыл бұрын
In a way, sort of. He mentions how he'd gotten as far as he did without his dad in his life in an angered revenge, and without his grandma as a way to say goodbye to his past. The album encompasses his young angst in his early 20s navigating his up and coming solo fame, and hints of his closeted sexuality. His work up until that album (Wolf) was brash, violent, and dark. He considers his "glow up" based on interviews and the context of his music after the album Cherry Bomb and Flower Boy. Funny enough, he considers Wolf to be his worst album because of the immaturity in production. His reflection on maturity and artistic growth is referenced in his most recent album Call Me If You Get Lost.

i struggle with this a lot because i’m not gonna act like it wouldn’t be annoying or frustrating for people to grossly misinterpret or miscontextualize your art. i can’t imagine what it would feel like as an artist to see people blatantly not understanding or not caring about the meaning behind what you’ve created. at the same time, that is unfortunately the reality of art-once it’s unveiled to the public it no longer belongs solely to the artist. it, in a way, “belongs” to everyone who interacts with it or reinterprets it. unfortunately there are always going to be people who don’t care about what art means or what the artist intended for it to mean when they made it. and even if people do care, if they can’t relate in the same way, they’ll reinterpret it differently. every artist is going to feel differently about this of course but the fact is that it’s unavoidable, especially the bigger your art gets. this is also just a problem with everyone these days having just incredibly low media literacy, but that’s a conversation for another day i think 😅

I said this in a reply but I want to post it separately too: People are allowed to make their own personal meaning and relate in their own way. You can respect the intended meaning of the song, and story behind it, while also being appreciative of the way it’s applicable to you individually. Things can have many meanings, that’s the beauty of it. It’s a bit different to make weird trends, but my point is that art is subjective and for everyone. When artists release art and music etc. they have to realize to an extent, that their art will lose context and be taken out of context. They may have legal rights, but once you release something you cannot keep full creative freedom over how people view your work. You just can’t. If you’re the type to interact with your fan base, you could talk about it, and hope people would be respectful, but you can’t really expect it. Some people just won’t care. Although not everyone wants to interact with fans like that.

Music and culture surrounding music its such a tough topic to navigate sometimes. It is such a personal art but yknow not everyone will understand songs as deeply as people who have had similar experiences as the artist or look into the artist's intent. Ive been looking into the punk scene more lately and to me its frustrating how punk culture has been glorified throughout the years by people with money. Even though it was a scene and genre born out of poverty and out of spite of "sell out" rockstars of the 70s. But honestly its just the nature of the art. Everyone is going to misinterpret shit differently and getting upset about it every time it happens is only gonna hurt you.
