We've all seen them before. A lot of us might even be guilty of these cringy editing habits.
In case you need a reminder or you're new to editing and want to learn what NOT to do in your videos, I took some time to make the cringiest video I could to show you exactly what to avoid.

I love how you not only made fun of a lot of these outdated cringey practices (some of these brought back memories of Windows Movie Maker and VHS era productions) but also demonstrated practical solutions and gave a clear practical example of how it looks so much better when done right. All the editing out of fluff is so important in today's short-attention-span media-saturated world of Reels and Tik Toks.

This and your recent 'Motion Graphics Design Crash Course' videos are great. So used to people showing the "correct" way to do things but what is correct often gets lost when we don't even know what we are supposed to be correcting. Failure makes a great teacher. This was very funny, unique, and I learned a lot. I came back to leave this comment just now although I watched it when it first came out because the way this was presented burned into my brain and I find myself randomly thinking about this video, haha. Thanks Casey

Re the jump cut w/crossfade - I used to do that because I had seen a tutorial that suggested it as a way to cover up the edit. Then I saw another tutorial that suggested instead to zoom in or out for emphasis or just to maintain visual interest, so I tried that, and it definitely looks better.
@UnboundedArtandCrafts

I will try that zoom trick instead of my normal fades, see how that works for tutorials 🤔

What about the smooth cut in Resolve? That one is made for covering up jump cuts.
@ChrisWestin
@ChrisWestin 2 ай бұрын
@@Ditispeter Yeah, that's how I did it - and it is cheesier looking than jumping to a slight zoom or some other more noticeable shift. Those help maintain visual interest more, compared to an unchanging talking head.

*That* is why I normally watch KZbin videos at 4x speed. One thing Cringey Casey did right was not having music playing while giving instructions. It's not a *bleep*ing documentary where you need to create drama. Just tell me what to do! (yeah, it's a pet peeve) As always, the great thing about this video is we get to see the thought process. It's not about where you click, but why.

You really made me laugh here. 12 years ago I started my KZbin channel mostly for that reason people were editing and filming their woodworking videos just like you described, and guess what; 12 years later I also see this kind of editing... I used to be a news editor for 32 years before I retired, I trained several dozens of people to edit news item which is WAY different that a KZbin video, I don't have to tell you that. But you remembered me of one young guy I trained, he was fresh from school so he thought he knew everything and and didn't need to learn anything from an old fart. So I told him to make a 30 seconds BG clip of how awesome the new roller-coaster ride was at the local amusement park here in Montreal. As expected he nailed it. Then I said to him that his assignment was to show that the new roller-coaster is the worst ride ever, but with the same picture from the cassette, yes it was a while ago, he was unable... This was to show that you can edit anything to make it feel any way you wish. I really enjoyed your video, I'm new to Resolve but as you might expect not to editing in several différent NLE

I love this, especially the demonstration of the edit. Even though it's 2024 and I should be used to it by now, I still struggle to be okay with the amount of jump cuts that are in today's videos. I try to do zooms or b-reel to hide them but I'm wondering if too much of those is just as distracting? Love your content!
