The data and narratives around a financial crisis have only become more alarming with how we spend money as a country. There will be leases that don't get renewed in commercial spaces that don't make sense anymore. Should every mall be built like the one in Hudson Yards? While buildings are trying to figure out their futures in New York & beyond, social media is trying to identify where it fits. Should the algorithms be in the US or should they just be open source? Is TikTok more harmful than helpful? It's the debate we can't stop coming back to.
One thing that has been steadily increasing is gold. No guest but there's gems everywhere in this episode. Shoutout our folks at JM Bullion: jmbullion.com/businessuntitled

All the CA folks that went to Austin realized that five months of 120 degrees is insane. Austin's net daily population flipped negative last October after years of 150+ daily influx. Resi sale and rental prices in Austin dropping rapidly.

Yes, the “attention” from TikTok will go somewhere else but “income” won’t. I don’t have the TikTok app and I’m 32.

Mel should study the (recent) history of social media more. Before TikTok there was Vine (and likely some short-form video app prior)... when Vine got shut down, creators migrated to Snap and then eventually TikTok. To sum it up: Creators need to view these platforms like hotel rooms vs permanent homes they'll live in forever and move accordingly. Many creators on Vine for example ended up moving to KZbin and did quite will for themselves. Dedicated creators will always need to be nimble and find a way to adapt to ever-evolving tech landscapes, if they continue to outsource distribution. Even if TikTok doesn't get shut down due to politicians, there will eventually be a time when it's not the hottest app around and they can either insist that on their divine right to make continue making money on TikTok or they get move on to the new platform.

It’s going to be hard for those huge influencers to continue to meet their reach. I think a lot will give up. Remember instagram and KZbin tweek their Algorithm and features just to keep up with TikTok. instagram has it difficult for creative users to gain popularity by being themselves. It has to be an aesthetic. Not TikTok. look at these huge influence on TikTok and the type of content they share and compare it. So I think if TikTok shuts down most creatives will give up. Some will try but ultimately give up. The ones who made it big on instagram after blowing up on TikTok may survive. Ps. Some/most ppl have anxiety posting on instagram. They feel judged and uneasy that they cant be themselves as they do on TikTok. Fear ppl may think they come off as cringe. Another thing to think about is US appeal is more about our privacy and data. That’s their headline. The fact is instagram and Snapchat definitely also monitor our privacy and data. Maybe for good yes, but I do think the gov is just mad they can’t control TikTok as they do with other social media companies.

Mel, I love how you brought this podcast to light! I’m sure it was a collective effort but being black and where I’m from, we don’t get to talk to billionaires and get their perspective on the economy. 🤎
