Last year I got over it with the voices for FF7 remake because hands down the characters were casted in a good way. But my lord why of all the casting did they get Zack Fair so wrong. I have nothing against this actor because obviously I don’t know him. But this was a bad casting call. For crisis core reunion they should have just brought Rick Gomez. I get it this game has to correlate with FF7 remake but still. Rick Gomez did not have to be replaced. Honestly, his voice is what got me into the game and the story itself. Rick brought a country boy character having dreams to make it big. And Caleb sounds like a boy who is still maturing and living in a LA type city. It’s off. Sorry for the blabber. I hope they could at least bring Rick as a DLC voice option that would be great.

TBH, if Square Enix has no plans in re-casting Rick Gomez, at least have the people in charge of the English voice acting to have Caleb change the way he voices Zack. It honestly doesn’t suit him, if it were for like younger teen Zack for flashbacks that style you see in reunion could be an exception, but honestly, Caleb’s voice really wasn’t very suitable for Zack during the events of Crisis Core.

One tiny thing about Reunion that irks me to no end is how Cloud says to Zack "I really like that sword" instead of "You know, I've never seen you use that sword". Not only does it not make any sense contextually but it also completely ruins the callback to Zack saying the same to Angeal earlier in the game. Also, it's not that the new VA is terrible, he has some really good deliveries here and there, it's just that anything but Rick Gomez is absolutely unacceptable and bad.

Here's my actual problem with the new casting. If they are trying so hard to come as close as possible to the previous VAs, then what really is the point? Why not just reuse the aforementioned? If this is a money issue, logically it seems like either: 1. They hired the new VAs to save money. or 2. The previous VAs were asking too much money. But seeing how SE just outed the aforementioned and they have shown on social media disingenuously saying they were cool about it; it's obvious the past VAs still want to reprise their roles and I believe otherwise on the money issue. I'm not saying the new cast is entirely terrible, in fact, the recast is quite good for the most part and fits their "younger" version (FF7 Remake). But specifically in the Crisis core remake and Sephiroth, what's the point in the recast when they try to sound so similar? A recast is supposed to sound a bit close, but obviously their own take on it as well.

Meanwhile...Toshiyuki Morikawa has remained the voice of Sephiroth as the Japanese VA(along with the rest of the cast I believe). the reasons to change any NA VAs could only be petty at this point. Which reminds me...imagine not having Steve Blum voice Vincent...there's no replacement VA that can match him.

People are blinded by nostalgia, for me Caleb did and is doing a great job as Zack, in fact, I would say that his voice fits better with the personality of the character. There is no need to disparage one actor to praise another. In fact, I would say that all the actors in Remake seem fantastic to me and even improve the work that was done before. It’s hard to say when it comes to auditions, who knows maybe they had good ones but wanted a butt load of money or they had all duds, but at the end of the day none of us really knows what’s going on behind the scenes, it’s a business, this series sells so much more in Japan then anywhere across the world so I don’t think square Enix cares much about English voice actors status, more about the numbers at the end of the day. Clearly the ff7 remake sold well enough to prove to keep the actors on.
