Earth-Two (also Earth Two or Earth 2) is a setting for stories (a "fictional universe") appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. First appearing in The Flash #123 (1961), Earth-Two was created to explain differences between the original Golden Age and then-current Silver Age versions of characters such as the Flash, and how the current (Earth-One) versions could appear in stories alongside earlier versions of the same character concepts. Earth-Two includes DC Golden Age heroes, including the Justice Society of America, whose careers began at the dawn of World War II, concurrently with their first appearances in comics. Earth-Two, along with the four other surviving Earths of the DC Multiverse, were merged into one in the 1985 miniseries Crisis on Infinite Earths. However, following the events of Infinite Crisis, the Multiverse was reborn, although the subsequent Earth-Two was not the same as its pre-Crisis equivalent.
Superman of Earth-Two is an alternate version of the fictional superhero Superman, who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was introduced after DC Comics created Earth-Two, a parallel world that was retroactively established as the home of characters whose adventures had been published in the Golden Age of comic books. This allowed creators to publish Superman comic books taking place in current continuity while being able to disregard Golden Age stories, solving an incongruity, as Superman had been published as a single ongoing incarnation since inception. This version of the character first appeared in Justice League of America #73 (August 1969).
When the Golden Age of Comic Books came to a close in the 1950s, most of DC Comics' superhero comic books ceased publication. At the start of the Silver Age, characters such as the Flash and Green Lantern were revamped for more modern times, ignoring or abandoning established continuity and thus making a clean break between the two eras. It was later established that the Golden Age and Silver Age heroes lived on Earth-Two and Earth-One respectively, these being separate parallel Earths in a single Multiverse.
Superman was one of the few exceptions; his stories had been published without interruption since his 1938 debut in Action Comics #1. This caused a continuity problem, in that Superman was simultaneously a member of the Justice Society of America on Earth-Two and also member of the Justice League of America on Earth-One. Writer Dennis O'Neil eventually resolved that there were two Supermen.[1] The Silver Age Superman was Kal-El from Earth-One, and the Golden Age Superman was Kal-L from Earth-Two.
Several differences between the two Supermen were established to clarify the distinction. The Earth-One names "Kal-El", "Jor-El", and "Jonathan and Martha Kent" became "Kal-L", "Jor-L", and "John and Mary Kent" on Earth-Two, as in the original Golden Age stories. Kal-L's costume was largely adapted from the 1940s drawing style, retaining the famous sweatshirt wrist-cuffs, while his S-shield symbol was originally very different from the main Superman S-symbol, adapting the 1940s six-sided version with the tail endings and hard-left tilt of the S-edges. George Pérez famously redesigned Kal-L's 1940s S-shield (starting in Justice League America #197) to be mostly the main S-symbol with five sides, and to merely reflect the tilt connecting the upper edge to the side of shield. Some artists such as Alex Ross and others, including Justice Society series artist Dale Eaglesham, continued to use the specific six-sided 1940s S-shield after Perez's change for Kal-L.[citation needed] Stories featuring both Supermen also indicated that Kal-L was the older of the two, being depicted as late-middle-aged, with grey or solid-white hair at the base hairline and face wrinkles, while his Earth-One counterpart was a youthful man of modern times.
These choices not only helped DC Comics to restore continuity to some of the character's Golden Age stories, but also led them to experiment with a Superman other than the mainstream one. Several differences between Kal-L and the better-known Kal-El were introduced. Kal-El was written to be different from the original Golden Age Superman, most famously by revealing his dual identities of Clark Kent and Superman to the woman he loved in the late 1940s, the Earth-Two version of Lois Lane, and eventually marrying her in 1950. Their early marital life was depicted in the feature "Mr. & Mrs. Superman" in DC's Superman Family series, which was very different from the original published Superman stories of the 1940s and 1950s, in which Kent kept his secret from Lane and never married her.

Bro you don’t know how much this means to me rn. I’ve been reading up on a lot of pre-2011 comics. Then reaching into the “Earth 2” version of these characters and tracing them almost to all their last appearances. I really love the JSA and miss when the Trinity was on the team I love the concept of each “age” having its over version of characters.

It doesn't really. Look at DC's _Earth 2_ Golden Age continuity as an Era of Magic (pre WW2). After WW2 it stopped. It didn't end, it stopped (like JSA & All-Star Squadron). And as the War wrapped up, the Paper reform occurred or took affect. And Comics didn't sell as well, cause they weren't being printed as much. Now,,,, Look at (what was) _Earth 1_ the Silver Age as an Era of Science (post WW2). > In the 1950's Gardner Fox & Julie Schwartz revived DC Comics by reintroducing the Same Heroes from 14-16 years earlier. Except now they made small "more sciencey" friendly changes to them (see: Showcase Presents & JLoA). Than in the 1960's, readers started asking (via the letter pages in the back of comics) _"Hey Editors! What happened to the Original versions of these Justice League Characters? Where's the Flash w/ the Tin Hat, Aquaman w/ the Yellow Gloves, The Cooler looking older Green Lantern w/ the cape?"_ > Thus in the mid 1960's they were retroactively re-introduced! These older JSA characters were given Earth 2 as continuity (because the newer scinece versions were selling comics again). While in the pages of JLoA, they started having the JLA cross into the Multiverse & thus meet these other- older versions. Like Earth 2 Robin shows up as 38 yrs old & Grown- wearing A suit that blends Batman's w/ Robin's look & logo (via _JLoA 55_ vol.1). Than the 1986 CRISIS occurred, and all the Earth's were compiled &/or synthesized into One Earth 🌎 = New Earth. A Reset of continuity.. All the Heroes New something had happened, but they weren't sure of what exactly. And back than the Deaths actually counted. At least for awhile (Flash & Supergirl & Earth 3 Lex Luthor). Because _Earth 1_ Supergirl died during the CRISIS. And before the reset. Thus nobody remembered her. But in #MustRead _Superman Batman 7-13 & 19 & Supergirl 1-5_ by _Jeph Loeb,_ they bring her back! Her suspended animation Kryptonian Rocket- finally lands (again essentially). But for the First time Post CRISIS. Which later allowed Barry Allen (the Flash) to return as well. Supergirl's landing also triggered the repopulation of Kryptonite Comets hitting the New Earth. Ref _Superman Batman 45-50_ (more great comics from the early 2000's).

He became his own man after Batman was semi and then officially retired. And his adult Robin costume is one of my favorites. His growing relationship with the Earth 2 Huntress was cut short with the original Crisis too.

It's cause Robin 1 is essentialy Robin 1+. They're the Exact same in origin. When the Earth 2 differential was established {Hey there's two regular Robin's named Dick Greyson} via _JLoA 55._ Thus post the date on _JLoA 55_ thru CRISIS 1986- Earth 2 Robin didn't appear in more than 20 comics in total. Most of which he wasn't A focus of.

I really love his power levels increase throughout the Golden Age. Like Strength: from being unable to break a impressive structure to merging moons together hard enough to create a new star, or even under a kryptonite disease, casually destroy Earth size planets. Speed also: or only being faster than a locomotive to casually breaking the time barrier, or only leaping 1/8th a mile to actually flying faster than light. And Durability: or being venerable to a bursting shell or knocked out by a high amount of electricity to easily no selling electricity which can turn Everest to ash, atomic explosions , barley feeling planetary explosions and even chilling in the sun (keep in mind this Superman does not get his powers from the sun, his Kryptonians were actually superhumans on Krypton) - not to mention Super Hearing, Vision, Microscopic Vision, Telescopic Vision, X-Ray Vision, EM Vision, Spotlight Vision, Infared Vision, Supersonic Voice projection , Supersonic Whistle, Sense of Touch, Genius IQ (made his suit by himself), Hypnosis, Telepathy, Super Breath, Heat Vision etc. Now, ofcourse there are also Retroactive Golden Age feats (helping the JSA in the nick of time, which included the Spectre, Dr.Fate, GL and Flash) Silver Age/Bronze Age Feats (like knocking out the Earth-One Superman who's power level was extremely powerful) COIE Feats (like destroying an extremely weakened but still star level Anti Monitor) and Infinite Crisis Feats ("shattering space and time" during his fight against the New Earth Superman.... and also only kryptonite from Earth-Two affects him, but since Earth-Two is destroyed...) which made him even more powerful...

In order to get the full Golden Age Superman origin, you need to seek out: • Action Comics #1. This is the debut of Superman, so it introduces the concept of him being an alien from a planet that “died of old age.” It also introduces the orphanage and him growing up and discovering his powers. • Superman #1. This one introduces the Kents, who discovered baby Kal-L and took him to the orphanage, only to take him back when they felt bad for leaving him. • Superman: The Newspaper Dailies. The newspaper dailies actually went into the most depth in explaining the Golden Age Superman’s origin. It dedicated many strips just to Jor-L and Krypton. Then, when it does get to Clark, it’s the first one to really explain in continuity why Clark is a reporter. On his first mission as Superman, he saved 2 people from suffocation for being locked in a bank vault, but he failed to save 2 others. After having read about the deaths in the paper, he feels bad and decides to become a reporter to get stories of people in need more promptly, in order to respond quicker. • Superman: The Sunday Strip newspaper. This one doesn’t really add anything unique that I remember, but it needs to be mentioned for completionist sake If you want to read the Golden Age Origin, you need to seek out reprintings and/or digital copies of Action Comics #1 and Superman #1, as well as Superman: The Dailies, 1939, which I don’t think is available digitally. When you combine all these stories into one, I think you have the definitive origin for Superman

The video mentions Golden Age Superman fighting various villains including Brainiac. However, Brainiac did not appear until 1958, a point at which most people assume that the Silver Age has begun. So, I would quibble and say that the Golden Age Superman did not fight Brainiac. There was no Earth-Two (or Golden Age) version of Brainiac.

@@doorsfan173 I would not think so, since the point of the video is the life story of the Golden Age Superman, not the other pre-Crisis Supermen. We don't get any other details of the life of the Silver/Bronze Age (Earth One) Superman, only the Golden Age or Earth Two Superman.

Earth-2 used to be a separate universe. But since the aftermath of Crisis On Infinite Earths. The Gold and Silver Ages have always been a part of the main DC universe, this whole time.

The Orphanage made the Hero relatable. Orphan trains were a thing, With WW1 and the Influenza, and TB epidemics, a lot of children fell into the hands of those institutions in the 20's so a lot of people reading in 1930 would have related to the Orphan status deeply.

Okay, I'm old, I get that. However, I grew up reading Superman and the associated comics since I learned to read in 1962/63. This is a direct contrast to what I grew up with. The original Superman and the rest of the JLA were on Earth one, the JSA was on Earth two, not the other way around. All of these various versions of Earth in the DC Universe makes about as much sense as the Multiverse of Marvel. I accepted that the second dimensional Earth existed in the make believe world of the comics, and even the fifth dimensional world of the Imp Mr. Mxzpitlyk, however it's spelled. But I have trouble with the way these things have evolved, yet, as evidenced by these comments, I still watch the movies, and these videos!! LOL!! Okay, the confused old Dude has said his peace.

Honestly, they should have kept Earth 1 and Earth two and absorbed the other earths into them. Earth-Two could have gotten Earth-4, Earth 1 could have had Earth-S and Earth X could have been divided between them.

The original Wonder Woman also gets less attention than she deserves. What a great story arc her life was with a very unique set of details, many if not most of which were also thanks to Earth-Two focus. Great video; wonderful details and perfect visuals. While the Earth-One Superboy was always my favorite comic character, Kal-L was and is my favorite Superman. Nice touch with even details on Powergirl. Can't wait to watch the original Batman video.

Fun Fact: In the All Star Squadron Annual 3 (published in the early 80s but Set in 1940 before the All Star Squadron main series), Superman, Batman, Robin and the other JSAers had their aging rate slowed due to being exposed to some weird radiation thanks to supervillain Ian Karkull. This, combined with his Kryptonian heritage, explains why his energy levels are far beyond a man his age.

You skip the fact that original Superman writer Siegel got replaced during WW2 period. In Original origin Krypton had Kryptonians (early name Kryptonites (not by Siegel), funny per Siegel they were "race of supermen") were portrayed to jump high even on Krypton. But in More Fun Comics 101 in first ever Superboy story there was much more casual version of Kryptonians being as weak on Krypton as Humans on Earth. It was also in original writer's comics where his super abilities got upgrade. Intially he had no super hearing or x-ray vision, then later on he is portrayed hearing people through the roofs and seeing them Also Superman is perhaps one of only characters who's origin got retconed. IN Action Comics #1 he didn't have parents at all and just grew up in orphanage (this detail got carried on to Fleischer cartoons btw), then only in Superman #1 Kents were added to explain why he has double identity (because father said people are scared of his powers so he must hide them) and why he uses them generally for good (because that's what mother, Mary (Martha and Jonathan were also made up by other writers) told him to do when he grows up). Also original Superman didn't care if he killed villains or let them die, he only stopped be lethal completely only after editorial ban in 1941, same with Batman. In fact Superman even was shooting guns as seen in Action Comics #23, first appearance of Lex Luthor. Also Siegel and Shuster came up with concept that will later on become kryptonite, rock that depowers Superman. In 1942 story, that was never officially published by DC (actually National Publications, originally the division that published Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern etc comics was called DC Superman publications and was part of bigger brand known as National Publications, untill all of this was renamed in 70's as DC comics, THAT's why it is "Detective Comics comics" ) so "officially" the radio show came up with kryptonite, even though not really, also originally the rock would depower Superman but power up human (or transit the power, it is not really clear, check "K-Metal from planet Krypton" in google to find and read that story yourself). It was also same comics where Superman would accidentally reveal himself to Lois, element that will be made officially only 50 (!) years later after overall reboot with Crisis on Infinite Earth! (in alternative timelines also known as Imaginary Stories there were many such stories ofc) Also Siegel and Shuster unsuccessfully pitched idea many many years, starting in 1933, only to get success in 1938 (they were writing other comics, some of which had elements that would become core of Superman , even if not under them, like Dr. Occult 1936 comics where he had red cape And was flying, I don't think there are pure Siegel written comics (ie before 1941) where Superman was flying instead of just high jumping, except one continuity mistake. Funny, historically Marvel Comics' Namore was the first to be able to fly, then Captain Marvel (now known as "Shazam") and only then Superman. Also originally Superman never had any relationship with yellow sun. It wasn't his power source. On the other hand there is element that was forgotten , but is Siegel's ie original canon detail, like when Lois Lane got blood transfusion and temporarily gained all Superman powers. In All-Star Superman for example they needed some complex formula for humans to gain powers. But then again, unlike All-Star Superman in any other comics Superman was close to the sun or even flew threw it and never got any decease. The original creator is very important. Image Comics' Invincible had always only ONE guy behind it, Robert Kirkman (and artists), Ultimate Spider-Man always had ONLY Brian Michael Bendis. But characters like Superman in normal comics very soon were tossed from one writer to another, with completely different mindset and approach. And also Superman in particular is very rebootable character, in post-crisis alone he had THREE origins, first by Byrne (where artificial birth on Krypton concept came from and also both Kents being alive during SuperMAN period (originally they were only alive during SuperBOY period) ), then by Waid (who scrapped whole artificial birth concept and therefore whole Death and Return of Superman comics can't work ) and then literally year before new52 it has third reboot by Johns (which made Clark to put his suit for the first time when he was a boy already). Only for new52 to happen and for Superman to have another reboot by Morrison (which was relatively the same as Johns, except no classic suit, and both Kents died before he became Superman just like in Siegel's origin And in Earth 1 ones where you don't count Superboy period in Smallville). Imagine if Spider-Man's Uncle Ben never existed, then if there was same origin as we know where Spider-Man becomes one after Uncle Ben gets mugged and killed, then instead of Uncle Ben getting killed it was Aunt May, then if both Uncle Ben and Aunt May were alive, then were Both killed (and some of these existing simultaneously on parallel Earths). THAT's Superman origins in MAIN non alternative universe comics and that is only one small detail about parents. Not talking about whole Kill or No-Kill (because for Main line it goes this : Earth 2 Killed, Earth 1 Absolutely No-Kills (Alan Moore's stories are Imaginary too, non canon), post-Crisis Byrne - killed but stopped Waid - no-kills unless some writers "remember" Byrne timeline still, Johns - killed and No-kills, New52 - killed , Rebirth & Reborn All of these are canon simultaneously even though they contradict each other. That's DC Comics.

The original Superman should always be present in ANY DC Universe as far as I'm concerned. He's the first. The one who started ALL universes as he's the one who started the industry. For him to be gone from the DC Universe is a statement to the lack of respect this character gets from his own company. Marvel hasn't done much better with their original heroes (RE: Marvel Comics #1) also being scarcely considered these days. I'm still waiting for a Superman film that's a period piece starring the original Superman. Now that would be something.

We do have an animated version of the original. It was the beautifully animated Fleischer series which are still considered by many to be the best animated Superman yet. We have yet to see a live action version. Live action is not limiting at all. How is it limiting? That makes no sense. Hell, they could make us "believe a man can fly" back in 1978 and it's only gotten better and more realistic since. In Man of Steel they damn near destroyed most of Metropolis. With today's technology they can accomplish pretty much anything. It's limited only by the imagination. Superman NEEDS a live action feature film that tells the ORIGINAL story of the man of steel from the golden age.

it's really fitting and nice both the original superman and batman both lived and died deaths with them both going out as they should, fighting. Nowadays comics fs have a circular storytelling (tho stuff like death metal sorta makes an attempt explain progress has been made) but it's interesting to think now long ago comics were moving in a linear fashion (e.g. wally west taking over as barry allen)

Wow, I did not know Superboy trained Superman. I was an avid comic book reader since the sixties. In the Max Fleischer cartoons Superman jumped a lot. Much like in the original comic books.

I'm glad I clicked on this video. Continuity is one of those things that only works when you commit to it and DC has not. You'll notice all the movies of the MCU have a specific place in their timeline and everything makes sense with regards to everything else, pedantic casual fans say that doesn't matter but many of their best films couldn't have happened without characters growing from past events which subsequent chapters acknowledge actually happened. But DC isn't good at that at all hence the best DC stories are the one of a kind things that happen in their own little world, like a limited series, graphic novel, sometimes with follow ups or a really good run from a particular writer. But there was this wonderful time following Crisis on Infinite Earth's when everything did make sense and it's too bad they never stuck to that superior form of storytelling.

The reason the post crisis version is seen as the definitive version, instead of the original Superman, is because the original was around for 30 years before the Silver Age came and changed things, but the post crisis version is almost 40 years old now. I absolutely loved both characters, and was very angry when they killed the original Superman of Earth 2 in Infinite Crisis. Infinite Crisis really hacked me off. It's bad enough they killed KaL-L, but they also killed off the original Robin, Batman, Huntress, and Blue Beetle. Obviously, some were killed in the original Crisis. I'm still irritated by that. I wish that DC would have brought back Earth 2 and all the original heroes in Infinite Crisis. I loved the heroes of Earth 2, and the JSA, as well as their children in Infinity Inc. I really wish they'd bring them back. It was a mistake to get rid of the multiverse to begin with.

11:49 Golden age Stories were not very happy, simple and go lucky they had lots of Dark elements for example Clark saved Larry from committing suicide in issue 2 of Superman , then clark tried to save a crazy car speedster who killed many people before hand but his car was stuck in middle of the Rail track and when Clark Saved the guy the Shock gave the driver a heart and he died, Clark Failed to save a Person. Frankie the kid from issue 3 of Superman he was abused by the Orphanage Owner.
