The PROBLEM With the Justice League

The Justice League is arguably the most iconic superhero team, whether discussing the realms of DC and Marvel or beyond. Characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash have individually shaped the superhero genre and the DC Comics Universe for decades. However, it seems as if the League isn't as prominent in modern media as it should be, especially following the failures of the DCEU's Justice League under Zack Snyder, and Henry Cavill's portrayal of Superman. The DCU will be rebooted with James Gunn's new vision for SUPERMAN. Meanwhile, teams like Harley Quinn and Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad seem to be receiving more attention. For instance, 'Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League' is the latest title in the Batman Arkham series, featuring malevolent versions of Superman. In 'Kill the Justice League,' Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Lantern are mind-controlled by Brainiac. Notable Justice League adaptations include 'Young Justice,' the DCAU/Justice League Unlimited, and 'Justice League Action.' By contrast, the Tomorrowverse and DCAMU somewhat pale in comparison to older Justice League animated films.

It's true. The video game they made, they had to face the Crime Syndicate, not the Justice League. Bad Boys vs Very Bad Boys. The story was simple to write. The Crime Syndicate manages to enter the JL Universe, somehow, they manage to capture the members of the JL and the Suicide Squad must stop them, using Batman's contingency plans. It's so simple, that it makes me angry, that they don't know how to write a story that even a chimpanzee tied to a typewriter could write.

Part of the problem is despite how popular and beloved the JLA are, for some reason DC refuses to give the founding 7 representation together outside of the comics. There always has to be some alteration to the roster to accommodate studio notes.

To be fair, it actually worked really well with the DCAU. They meddled a fair bit and we still got the best thing ever. Do I wish they meddled less? Yes, mostly. We could've got Batman and such in the Arrowverse. We almost got a Suicide Squad with Harley. It would've been amazing! But also, I kinda wish they meddled more with the Snyderverse. Nothing about that felt right to me. So eh. We just need really good creators in charge. So MAYBE James Gunn will work some magic. Otherwise? They'll have to get Bruce Timm in charge. Despite not being Justice League adaptations, I really liked Batman's interactions with the League members in Brave And The Bold and The 2004 Batman show. His dynamic and rivalry with characters like Green Arrow was great and funny. The same goes for Aquaman in Brave And The Bold.

It absolutely boggles my mind that DC has the ability to make an any story they want, with any form of media, and they choose to do the most obscure or anti-climactic things possible. They made an entire new universe for the animated films, and they already squandered it by basically making the exact same mistake as last time. Then they go ahead and make an entire live action TV DC universe, but do everything they possibly can to make it convoluted, confusing, and inconsistent. Dumb.

Facts after facts! M doesn't miss! Man, I wish Superman, Green Lantern, and all the rest got the respect they deserve. They're iconic, great characters. Especially Superman. I agree with you. So many superheroes get no respect. And it's due to one character: Batman. The writers and editorials decided long ago to make Batman the central, most iconic, most powerful and important character DC has on its roster. They've given him most of their powers, and if not, he's been designed go be able to defeat them, despite their powers. Superman, arguably the greatest superhero in print, is constantly being "outdone" by Batman. Characters like Martian Manhunter, the GL's, The Flash, and Aquaman are always getting sidelined, nerfed, or downplayed in the presence of, or due to Batman. This is obvious in the comics and the animated shows and movies. Never mind lesser known characters like Mr Terrific (an awesome character), The Atom, Booster Gold, Hawkman, Captain Atom, and even Shazam. They all get no shine in the shadow of Batman.

But DC can't stop with the Batman worship. The writers excuses are that Batman is easier to write for. One more reason is that the marketing team does a poor job at marketing comics. They'll let you know about Batman, Superman, Flash, and Wonder Woman, but they don't do a good job at marketing characters aside from the Suicide Squad, who have been getting too many projects.

I didn't have a problem with most of what Smyder was going for, but he and his story really weren't the kind of guy to build an entire cinematic universe around. Dude was just planning his own self contained story, and it should've stayed that way while WB built their larger universe in a different continuity. To be fair, a lot of the issues he had were with the studio. He wasn't going to have Batman in the Superman sequel until WB forced him to fast track a Justice League movie. Then they got cold feet and cut him down at the knees with BVS and Justice League. Whether or not you care for his particular interpretation of certain things, his version of his movies are objectively better movies than what the studio mandated versions released into theaters. The buck stops with the studio for not thinking things through. I don't like everything Gunn and Safran have in mind, but it's the first time it feels like DC actually has a plan they're trying to execute on. The problem and my fear is that it might be too little too late. I don't think it will be nearly as successful as it could have been had the done it right almost a decade ago, but I think they could have a solid foundation if they put out nothing but creatively vibrant quality. There's just a lot of pressure for things to be really good because they may have honestly missed the train of cape ish being the hottest thing in entertainment.

What needs to happen is that we need to see the original 7 first in a film: -Superman -Batman -Wonder Woman -Aquaman -Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) -Flash (Barry Allen) -Martian Manhunter Since 2011, DC has had a weird obsession with replacing Martian Manhunter with Cyborg, and to me having Cyborg as a main member doesn’t make sense, due to him being a teen titan and him being more ingrained in that franchise than the league. Martian is a founding member and the philosophical wisdom of the team, he keeps everyone grounded. On top of that, with the popularity of the JL animated shows, more people have become invested in John Stewart GL & Wally West Flash, and want them to be the main GL and Flash for the DCU. I’m not opposed to seeing them but Hal & Barry need to be done correctly before you go expanding the universe. Having cyborg and Wally as teen titans first then eventually have Wally become a second flash makes more sense than just shoehorning Wally in the league just because. You can always grow the team after you establish the true founding members. Hell here’s an idea, why not have cyborg be a teen titan and Wally as kid flash, and have the entire teen titan team as reserve Justice League members, keeping them titans but get called up when the situation calls for it? Hal Jordan has been getting a lot of “hate” lately in favor of John, Kyle etc…. And his stories have been dc staples for a very long time. Alan Scott is the original green lantern, but Hal Jordan was the one that made the GL franchise a household name, the same goes for flash, Jay Garrick is the original flash, but Barry was the one that made that franchise a household name, so Hollywood, DC, the fans, and society in general needs to act like it🤷‍♂️

Adam Waterman was the original and didn't get a publication interruption (unlike Jay & Alan's retirements), but when Arthur Curry debuted in 1956, Aquaman's popularity went from mid-tide to high-tide as "Underwater King Arthur"...as opposed to your standard "20,000 leagues under" variant...about the only thing that made Adam Waterman unique prior was that he didn't need scuba gear...and then you have this real popularity explosion thing called Superman/Aquaman hour in 1967...take that Bruce!

I think WB chosed the wrong idea of fitting the Modern outlook of life. One thing that distinguished DC and Marvel is the approach they took. Marvel was more on realism and flawed characters that people would relate with their day to day lives. DC characters and stories weren't about something to relate, it was about very powerful people despite being God like chose to have integrity. It was suppose to inspire people to become the best version of themselves not finding a crutch where they feel comfortable about their state of being. WB and DC should have sticked to that identity its what separates them from Marvel, they should have doubled down on it especially during this times where young people need something for them to not give up.

Phil Bourasa was still the character designer, and he did stuff like Crisis on Two Earths and Young Justice. But the designs became so weird ever since YJ’s cancellation. Tiny waist, giant chest, big square heads on characters like Superman, diamond shaped heads for the ladies. I’d be more forgiving of the movies, despite their narrative, tonal, character, and dialogue problems if the movies looked as good as YJ seasons 1 and Crisis on Two Earths. Warner Brothers owned the rights for decades and seem bored with the character, hence there always being some kind of new spin on the character often done in modern iterations. i think DC should embrace the elseworlds set up, They can make original stories and takes of the characters while not labeling it as a cinematic universe. They can experiment on it a lot and take different themes. technically Joker and the batman didn't feel like superhero movies it just felt like the classic movies from the 70s where its focused on story rather than theatrics. I feel like DC is not playing their cards with this kinds of idea. They can make Movies with super hero characters and make it into character driven movies with different genres like noir, surrealism or even horror. I think DC should focus on making original stories instead of a cinematic universe. I would like to see a Martian manhunter with noir elements and take inspiration from the invasion of the body snatchers, the sign and even the thing into one movie. Alot of these movies would be experimental and low budget compared to the block buster and the good thing about this is that if it flops it wont be a big damage monetary wise for WB and they don't have to worry about making a sequel or a series unlike if a movie from a cinematic universe sucked it basically impacts everything. My point, DC needs to embrace original ideas and stray from comic book adaptations especially if they cant make a plan. The focus should be noir type or even pulp like. Tbh i DESPISE CINEMATIC UNIVERSES, i do like things to connect but not everything needs to nor do you need a cinematic universe for everything to connect.

tbh at this point i think DC should embrace the elseworlds set up, They can make original stories and takes of the characters while not labeling it as a cinematic universe. They can experiment on it a lot and take different themes. technically Joker and the batman didn't feel like superhero movies it just felt like the classic movies from the 70s where its focused on story rather than theatrics. I feel like DC is not playing their cards with this kinds of idea. They can make Movies with super hero characters and make it into character driven movies with different genres like noir, surrealism or even horror. I think DC should focus on making original stories instead of a cinematic universe. I would like to see a Martian manhunter with noir elements and take inspiration from the invasion of the body snatchers, the sign and even the thing into one movie. Alot of these movies would be experimental and low budget compared to the block buster and the good thing about this is that if it flops it wont be a big damage monetary wise for WB and they don't have to worry about making a sequel or a series unlike if a movie from a cinematic universe sucked it basically impacts everything. My point, DC needs to embrace original ideas and stray from comic book adaptations especially if they cant make a plan. The focus should be noir type or even pulp like. Tbh i DESPISE CINEMATIC UNIVERSES, i do like things to connect but not everything needs to nor do you need a cinematic universe for everything to connect.

They're not even that interesting, teams DC should focus on more could be the JSA, The Metal Men, The Legion of Doom, and Justice League Dark. WB thinks the Suicide Squad will be the next Guardians of the Galaxy. The reason why the Guardians work and the Squad doesn't is because the Guardians actually work well together. They're like a family, unlike the squad, who are just there because they have to be. WB and DC need to calm down with the Batman worship and start giving other heroes the respect they deserve. Way back in the comics. JLA concentrated on second stringer characters, with occasional guest stars of the more popular characters like Batman to the detriment of sales. A problem Grant Morrison fixed in the late 90s to early 2000s, by focusing on the the Trinity and more popular characters like Green Lantern and Green Arrow. Nothing beats a JLA roster with the truly more popular superheroes.

Talk about DC Superhero Girls. While the 2015 version is a generic cartoon for little girls, it was enjoyable to watch. The one by Lauren Faust, on the other hand, is an insult. Green lantern has been deeply sidelined for over a decade. Omitted, marginalized, minimized, taken out easily like a 3rd rate punk. You'd never know he was a heavy hitter who could take out superman level characters and beyond. Now, he loses all his power because he makes....wait for it...a bright light. Crisis 2 had him perform what would be a low level feat, now is beyond him. So pathetic. It's like superman losing all his power because he punches Bane. Batman's "jet belt" had more effect on darksied getting pushed into the boom tube than the most powerful weapon in the universe. Beyond forgivable stupidity.

I once thought a DC Cinematic Universe was a good idea but came to the realization that DC works a better as a disconnected universe. The best movies have been movies not connected to the bigger DC Universe. The best DC movies are the Batman movies (Burton, Nolan and Reeves), Joker (Todd Phillips) and The Suicide Squad (Gunn). The best DC Shows are Superman & Lois (CW), Doom Patrol (Max), Harley Quinn (Max / Animated) and Peacemaker (Max). Why? Compelling stories, great scripts, great directors and great actors. My hot take is that DC tries way, WAY too hard to be "adult", and it fundamentally doesnt work with a lot of it's core superheroes because they are inherently childish - and that's why they WORK. Now when i say this i dont mean that they can't tackle adult themes or anything, but that they have a certain... Naive hope to them. They're fundamentally good people who want to do good, they're role models, they're the best we can hope to be, that's why people looked to these ideas in the first place. And sure, taking a character like that and facing them with an adult issue can be interesting, but only when it's done sparingly. By this point it seems like every single new piece of media i hear about DC doing is some shocking nihilistic take on these superheroes. Its like they took Alan Moore and Frank Miller's works and decided to push all of their new stuff in that direction, and it fundamentally taints the entire premise. It's not like the DCAU never tackled tough subjects for example - Batman sitting down with Ace and being with her while she dies is ROUGH, but there's a sincere sweetness to that to be passed on about the importance of being there for someone else. Meamwhile look over at Apocalypse War and itstjust a nihilistic gorefest where the answer in the end is "shit is so bad we should just give up and start again" - and im sorry, i know people like that movie, but that's just fucking awful. It's why Justice League action is so refreshing, (and im glad someone finally brought up how charming it is) because it returns to those childish roots and shows us a healthy depiction of these characters and the heroism they stand for. They're just allowed to be loveable, charming people to look up to again, and ffs, that's perfect for them! Leave the satire and criticisms to shows like Invincible or The Boys, let Superman be the thpe of guy who would never, EVER take over the world because he's sad his wife died (looking at you Iniustice) and let Batman be the guy that'd sit down with a dying kid so she's not alone. Let the core trip hug it out and be supportive of each other and let people unironically look to them so they can feel happy. And then, when it's suitable, you can have them tackle a tough subject and show how they pull through, but just... Never let that optimism die, because that's why everything feels so inspiring, at least to me, with a lot of the stuff being put out now.

its the nature of the world today, everyone is soo nihilistic and cynical. People today idolize homelander.... those people are kinda already telling that they are psycopaths... and those people do not understand integrity.... and those people do not understand integrity.... I think WB chosed the wrong idea of fitting the Modern outlook of life. One thing that distinguished DC and Marvel is the approach they took. Marvel was more on realism and flawed characters that people would relate with their day to day lives. DC characters and stories weren't about something to relate, it was about very powerful people despite being God like chose to have integrity. It was suppose to inspire people to become the best version of themselves not finding a crutch where they feel comfortable about their state of being. WB and DC should have sticked to that identity its what separates them from Marvel, they should have doubled down on it especially during this times where young people need something for them to not give up. TBH DC shines bright when it focuses on the little things, Personally my favorite story lines of DC is always kingdom come and superman peace on earth. I Think the perfect superman story is peace on earth and it deserves an adaption even with just a mid budget, which is one flaw of DC. they always shoot for the block buster and every flop risks them being bankrupt. While they literally have great stories that can be adapted while using small budgets like the joker film. I think they should focus less on fights and powers but more on the narrative on why the heroes are needed.

Honestly, the Justice League is a hard nut to crack even in comics. The original team was a club of DC’s only solo stars at the time, with two characters (Batman and Superman) barely showing up, hanging out with their hipster sidekick and doing missions where they split up a lot. The satellite League was practically the same thing only expanded (and with no sidekick). The Detroit JLA was Gerry Conway being allowed to do whatever he wanted and playing up his own characters. The JLI (my favorite) was a big hit that was hated by editorial and started to fail once the humor and politics that made it work were removed. And Morrison’s JLA was big idea sci-fi that’s hard to replicate by anyone who’s not Morrison. Every version of the JL is so different and it’s hard to tell which version is going to work.

It's annoying that they want to do the Avengers. The trams are not similar anymore than Titans and the League. But DC in the comics has largely given up its identity and they brought Geoff Opportunist Johns in so it was guaranteed to focus on the vastly inferior post Flashturd/New Poopy-2 crap rather than the iconic fare. But get those coins, GJ. The later cartoons suffered the same fate and were hardly past bad fanfare. Instead of the iconic, they go edgelord with Flashturd/New Poopy-2

I really enjoyed Justice League Action too. I remember being in middle school and being so excited when a new Justice League animated series was announced. Too bad Cartoon Network buried it and it was almost impossible to watch. But I thought it was a lot of fun and showcased many lesser known DC heroes.

The reason the Batman vs Superman fight works in Miller's TDKR is because there are decades of history behind it. In that book, superheroes were outlawed in the 70s. WW went to Themyscira, Hal went "to the stars", and Bats and Green Arrow were the only holdouts. Superman finally convinced Bats to hang it up and when GA wouldn't, he ripped his arm off!! So now, after disbanding all the superheroes Superman is a complete too. He's basically a machine boy for Ronald Reagan. Their fight works in the books because all of that, and their prior history, long with decades of animosity is behind it. In the BvS movie, They have just met. Bruce jumps to a conclusion on Clark" s character, which is totally out of character for Batman (so is killing and branding the bad guys), And for some reason Clark starts digging around in Gotham, sticking his nose Into Batman's personal war for no real good reason. That makes no sense especially considering he is close to getting bought up on charges by Congress. In the first movie, he just learned that he is not the last survivor of Krypton, And there is a chance that there are other Kryptonians out there, but that never even comes up. So the two of them fighting in The BvS movie makes no sense whatsoever. It was just an attempt to capitalize on TDKR nostalgia. Now add in the fact that it concludes with the Martha moment, and it's just nonsense.

The reason the earlier animated series of the JLA worked is because all the heroes and villains were balanced. They were all written with such care, and the world/character building wasn't rushed. Nowadays, it seems like they have to make everything a galactic, multiverse, world ending threat. Don't get me started on how ridiculous the power scaling has gotten.

I've been meaning to watch a bit of Justice League Action and it sounds like I was missing out a bit 😎. That comedy bit with Batman and Superman playing good cop and bad cop and Mark Hamil being captured by the Joker and the Trickster is really clever 🤣 🤣.
